MN TOWERS - WHAT was wrong with the old layout???

What prompted this change?

JustineMumsnet · 15/12/2006 10:38

Hello all,
Well first of all - apologies for all the upset. We genuinely didn't think it would cause so much distress. As suggested the changes were prompted by the home page update really. There was a suggestion from a few quarters that the old home page was a bit "cottage industry". And as it was getting on a bit, we agreed it could do with an re-vamp so we got a fab designer (who worked on Guardian Unlimited) to come and refresh the look. That involved changing the navigation to go across the top of the screen and that in turn prompted the changes on talk.

Previously on talk you couldn't link to other areas on the site - just the home page - so we wanted to change that too. Apart from the fly out menu on active conversations the only other change of note (apart from colours, spacing etc which we are more than happy to tinker with to make them better for you) is the pagination after 100 posts and this is all about ensuring the site works well. The multiple downloading of very long threads really did put a strain on our servers. If you detest that particular aspect then rest assured we are aiming shortly to introduce a MyMumsnet area which will allow you to override defaults and tailor-make your own look for the site. More of that in the new year.

Of course we do promise to take a look at all your thoughts and suggestions with regard to making talk better for you - if there's a specific thing that is making you sad then please do let us know what it is. Can we also add a small plea to all to give the new look a chance - it really isn't much that much changed, honest?

Many thanks,
Mumsnet Towers

Hello Chillun,

I've put the "active convos" links on to the top of the threads themselves so you don't have to go to the menu to get to them. I figured if you are chatting you probably don't want to have to go over to top left click a menu blah blah.

Anyway, it's there on threads and thread lists (topic pages).

Regards,
Tech

Hi RTKM,

That's one of the personalisation things we are looking at doing. The one's we're mulling so far are

  1. Number of threads in active convos
  2. Active convos - my topics (save fave topics a bit like on the search page)
  3. Number of messages per page (or unlimited)
  4. Most recent first vs Most recent last as default order for threads

Some others which escape me right now.

I haven't been pushed away, but my visual design skills are not all they might be. I "lack visual flair" allegedly.

Copied from other thread "Alright so change is not for everyone, we'll concede that!":
Ok here's the plan.
Now you mention it, we think you've all got a point about the wasted space on the left hand side of the screen (the beige bar)
so we will go back to our lovely designer (plse God she's not been reading this morning) and ask her to have ago at moving that navigation across the top of the page, so it's more like things were before and so there's more width for talk.

We will also continue to play with fonts, colours, spacing and hues until we silence (or at the very least quieten) the hue and cry...

Many thanks, as ever, for your input.

Hello,

Now, y'all is getting hysterical. I may have to administer a coupla slaps

This thread got very wide because of the NNNOOO etc in one of the posts. Talk has always done that I promise, even the old one..... I've split that word now and it should be back to normal.

As mentioned here , plans are afoot to change the layout to lose the side bar and fill the page again.

I'll change the link colour in a minute so it's obvious which threads you've already seen.

Love,
Tech

Actually JanH you're right (of course). We'll address that in the new one, or sooner.....

Tech · 15/12/2006 12:06

What we are going to do with public profiles - when we do them - is store them under nickname rather than identity.

So I can set one up as "Tech", and people can see it by clicking tech. But they wouldn't see it by clicking "EmbarrassingPersonalProblem" which is one of my pseudonyms.

BUT: you'll only be able to create a profile under you "main" nickname. You won't be able to have one for tech and another for EPP.....

Summink like that anyway. It must be time to eat by now surely. Ooh 12:06. That's lunchtime that is.
