because they are REALLY annoying

Well here's the situation in bald numbers. For these type of ads - ie expandable overlays - Mumsnet gets paid (net of all fees to the folks who run it for us) about £9 for every thousand pages it appears on. By comparison the fee for a regular (ie non expandable) ad works out on average at under £2. It is capped to open only once automatically per user per day, but if you roll over it by mistake it will open again (we would think that there's a bit of getting used to it and then people will get the knack and won't roll over it so much). We did also run it by folks first on this thread and almost everyone who responded said it would be alright to give it a go.
It would be nicer, we agree, not to have any ads like this (in fact it would be nice not to have any at all) but we do have (quite a lot of) costs to meet and I guess we have to accept some level of commercialism if we are to keep Mumsnet free to use. We agree, though, that it's a fine balancing act and we do turn away a lot of pop-up type stuff plus a number of businesses who we know you'd rather not see on Mumsnet. Do continue to let us know your thoughts, though, it's always helpful when it comes to weighing up these things. Best, MNHQ
