Hmm yes,I agree.
Have complained before but it is really putting me off.
So aggressively in yer face.
I thought the powers that be had more class....

MrsJohnCusack · 27/11/2006 08:15

I don't get any ads at all on Mumsnet - not sure why
something I have must be blocking them - yay. because the ones you're describing here sound really annoying

throckenholt · 27/11/2006 08:17

try changing your scroll bar to the other side - then you don't inadvertantly click it again when you are scrolling up or down through the page.

(they annoy the hell out of me as well).

nailpolish · 27/11/2006 08:17

i dont get any ads either

its great

JustineMumsnet · 27/11/2006 08:34

Well here's the situation in bald numbers. For these type of ads - ie expandable overlays - Mumsnet gets paid (net of all fees to the folks who run it for us) about £9 for every thousand pages it appears on. By comparison the fee for a regular (ie non expandable) ad works out on average at under £2.
It is capped to open only once automatically per user per day, but if you roll over it by mistake it will open again (we would think that there's a bit of getting used to it and then people will get the knack and won't roll over it so much). We did also run it by folks first on this thread and almost everyone who responded said it would be alright to give it a go.

It would be nicer, we agree, not to have any ads like this (in fact it would be nice not to have any at all) but we do have (quite a lot of) costs to meet and I guess we have to accept some level of commercialism if we are to keep Mumsnet free to use. We agree, though, that it's a fine balancing act and we do turn away a lot of pop-up type stuff plus a number of businesses who we know you'd rather not see on Mumsnet. Do continue to let us know your thoughts, though, it's always helpful when it comes to weighing up these things.
Best,
MNHQ

harpsichordcarrier · 27/11/2006 08:44

nah, don't care. they don't annoy me that much
(currently trying to sell some advertising myself for a concert and it's a PITA so sympathies...)

Twiglett · 27/11/2006 10:08

ok they don't annoy me enough to think its not worth that much money so you can keep them

like you wouldn't have anyway .. but at least now you can breathe easy because its OK WITH ME

ROFL

Phew!

MerlinsBeard · 27/11/2006 10:17

pop up blockers are wonderful things

SlightlyMadSanta · 28/11/2006 21:31

For me the most annoying thing about the Scenic one is the location of the expandable bit. It covers up the Flip threads and add message type stuff at the top of the message.

Maybe a bit of thought as to the physical locality of these things might make it more bearable. For example if hte ad was moved to the left of the screen it would be less likely to accidentally roll over as you go for the scroll bar (either that or you provide us all with scroll mice/mouses!!!).

SlightlyMadSanta · 28/11/2006 21:50

Ohh just realised I get a different version depending on which browser I use. I get a cool Tetris game in IE (well maybe not).

Anyhow I have worked out how to block it in my main browser so I am not to worried anymore.

Anyone using AOL go to the blocking pop-ups menu at teh bottom of the window. Select 'block animated media from MN' Viola.

hub2dee · 28/11/2006 21:59

I personally think they're pretty annoying. It's fairly hard not to mouse over them when you want to reach (a normally positioned) scroll bar.

SlightlyMadSanta · 28/11/2006 22:01

Sorry 3rd post on eh bounce. I was just about to complain about slow loading of chat threads. But now I have blocked hte scenic ad it is much much better.

Willow2 · 28/11/2006 22:09

Just out of curiosity, anyone know of any other sites that pay as much attention to their members' likes and dislikes?

Trinityrhino · 28/11/2006 22:11

what are you lot talking about, I have barclays ads that don't change at all, where are the ones you mean?

hub2dee · 28/11/2006 22:15

I thought this was the Internet, Willow. Don't tell me there's more ?

Trinityrhino · 28/11/2006 22:17

TELL ME TELL ME TELL ME

Willow2 · 29/11/2006 15:09

Hub - it somehow seems that way, non?

oliveoil · 29/11/2006 15:14

quit yer moaning

hairymclary · 29/11/2006 15:23

I find on MN they're usually acceptably subtle, and it keeps MN towers in pimped out Hummers with bitchin' wheel spinners if we're exposed to them.

NotSoupyOhNoNoNoShesOnABreak · 29/11/2006 15:51

Get an ad blocker. I have Kaspersky Internet Security and I have no idea what ads you're talking aboutt.
