Why is the mobile site so slooooow ?

I had a lot of trouble with the new look mobile site when it was first launched, and used the desktop site on my phone for quite a while, then tried the mobile site again and it was much better. However, in the last week or so, loading any page on the mobile site has slowed to the pace of an asthmatic ant with some heavy shopping. As a rough estimate, loading any page takes 2-3 times as long as any other web page on my phone, and Active Conversations takes anywhere between 5-10 times as long to load. Quite often it refuses to load properly at all, loading the 'structure', but none of the text. Please help ?

(Samsung Galaxy S, running android browser)

It's because mumsnet techs think we're all stupid. They changed the look and everyone complained so they temporarily got rid of some of the changes and are now sneaking them back but by bit... starting with the bloody moving adverts which give you a headache and slow everything down.

LineRunner · 24/11/2014 20:12

There is definitely a problem.

DawnMumsnet · 24/11/2014 22:09

Evening all,

So sorry you're all experiencing problems with the mobile site. We've flagged this issue to our Tech folk and will report back as soon as we can.

With regard to adverts, as some of you know we've been trying out different ways of advertising on Mumsnet mobile. We do need to take adverts and we're trying to find a way of balancing the need to include adverts and highlight other Mumsnet content and not wanting to interfere with Mumsnetting.

We've tried out two ways so far, the fixed scrolling ad at the top and the ads in between posts. The reactions have been very evenly split and now we're trying fixed again for a short time to measure impact.

However, the ads shouldn't be having an adverse impact on loading speed. We'll get to the bottom of this and hopefully normal service will be resumed very soon.

In the meantime, we're really sorry for all the frustration this is causing. Flowers

Thanks Dawn Cake

DawnMN / MNHQ,

I've come onto my PC to write this.

It seems to be a remarkable coincidence that the 'quiet' reinstatement of the advert at the top of the mobile site has happened at the same time as a huge increase in loading times, a strange flashing of adverts and sometimes entire pages, and frequent unwanted jumping to the wrong page, all of which is affecting a number of different devices that have decent internet connections.

I hope that there is something you can do because this has reverted back to making the mobile site unusable for me.

Everyone accepts that MNHQ wants and is entitled to carry advertising on the site btw. I daresay the odd person might even read the ads. So this is not simply a moan about content and layout - it's a concern about usability & functionality and a request that (and I mean this literally) you not give Mumsnetters unnecessary headaches.

Thank you.

We hear you LineRunner - Tech have just put a fix in that should hopefully make things better, but if you're still having trouble shout and we can take another look.

LineRunner · 25/11/2014 21:23

It is still slow, I'm afraid. Just trying it out now.

LineRunner · 26/11/2014 08:59

The good news is that it's a bit better, but it is still much slower than it was. And the advert at the top is still obscuring the first post on the page.

NotCitrus · 26/11/2014 11:58

It's still pretty slow, usually 10+ seconds to load a page.

onedogatoddlerandababy · 26/11/2014 18:32

Just for feedback, mine is still painfully slow, I have to walk away while I wait for it to load up

And the scrolling advert at top is awful. Ads in between posts, much much preferred.

And my bookmark seems very hit and miss.

I am all about the grumbling today.Grin

NotCitrus · 26/11/2014 19:01

I also get warnings that "this site's security certificate is invalid" at least once a day, FWIW.

usualsuspect333 · 26/11/2014 19:14

It's still slower than a slow thing on my kindle fire.

SwedishEdith · 26/11/2014 19:17

I think it's actually worse now than the other day

kinkytoes · 26/11/2014 19:25

It's so much slower since they changed the layout. I rarely use MN these days, but once upon a time I was on here every day.

AgentProvocateur · 27/11/2014 00:02

I'm on much less now too - the slowness and the flickering ads are making it unbearable. It's been painfully slow these last few days.

LineRunner · 27/11/2014 00:37

Ffs it's worse right now than it has been for days. I've just browsed some other sites and they're fine - it's just MN I'm afraid that is reeeeeeally slooooow.

My ad at the top is showing me Halloween images btw for Flora.
