Can we opt out of the sounds on adverts?

Twice today, I've been having a deliberately quiet laptop session when suddenly I've had noisy MN advert soundtracks start going - very disconcerting and definitely unwanted. Is there a way to opt out of the soundtracks?

Not been happening for me today. I've been on a laptop when I've been on MN. (Win 8 and FF)

Four times in the last 10 minutes, even while searching MN for Site Stuff to see if there was already a thread on this.

I have a very small broadband allowance and can't afford to go over it, for that reason I never go on Youtube etc. Really don't want to be paying extra to have adverts looping over and over.

Now on this thread. Bye!

Now it just didn't occur to me that it might contribute to a breach of broadband data caps - so apologies for that, Extra.

Hi all,

Just letting you know that we have flagged this issue to our Tech team, and they'll be hunting the noisy blighters down and zapping them.

We're really sorry this has cropped up again; we know how annoying it is. Flowers

Happened to me for the first time (twice, one Dettol, the second I can't remember) this evening. Can't say how disappointed I was to find this happening. It has put me off using other sites. Would hate for it to do the same here.

EauRouge · 23/11/2014 21:49

I just got another one, I think it was for Google.

EauRouge · 23/11/2014 22:19

And a Tesco one.

Got99problems · 24/11/2014 20:57

Just had one for android. Annoying!

cozietoesie · 24/11/2014 21:58

Haven't had anything since Saturday. (Saying that might be tempting fate though.)

I had one today but couldn't find this thread to report it, it was for Cillit Bang.

ebay, then National Lottery, then ebay again. 2 minutes ago.

Can we opt out of the sounds on adverts?

Have had some more. Haven't bothered to check what they are. I go for the sound button straight away, turn it off and then ignore. Not ideal as I like to have the sound turned on most of the time.

cozietoesie · 25/11/2014 21:37

Well that really T'd me off. I was in the middle of writing a difficult response to another poster who was quite upset and suddenly I have blaring Cilit Bang all over me.

I quite lost my train of thought - which was not helpful.

Just had Lemsip followed almost immediately by Nicotinell. And Lemsip has just started up again.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 25/11/2014 21:55

Hang on, just closed MN and Lemsip started up again when I was in FB. Hmmm.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 25/11/2014 21:56

Oh, I had MN open on another window in the background, closed it and Lemsip went away. Back to blaming MN!

cozietoesie · 25/11/2014 22:04

Due to circumstances, I'm using a machine which hadn't been scrubbed of spyware for several days. I've just done a deep scrub and I'll see if that helps.

The Nurofen advert seems to be on a permanent loop. Even when I manage to disable the sound, it switches itself back on as soon as the advert re-starts.

And now there's one for Cillit Bang...

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 25/11/2014 22:10

I wonder if it depends on the browser? I use three computers, two pcs and a Mac, it only seems to happen on the Mac (Safari).

coppertop · 25/11/2014 22:12

Mine's IE-something and Google Chrome.

(Lemsip ad now starting by itself)

cozietoesie · 25/11/2014 22:16

I don't see what the problem is for MN. They know the symptoms and they know the ad candidates. Surely they shoud have been able to stop it by now.

OP posts:
TheFarSide · 25/11/2014 22:43

It is happening with a range of advertisers, so it seems to me a Mumsnet problem rather than a problem with whoever is advertising.

cozietoesie · 25/11/2014 22:53

I just don't know - but Tech should be able to have established what's happening, when it's happening, where it's happening and so on. Beats me.

OP posts:
ChippingInAutumnLover · 25/11/2014 23:03

Dawn I'm glad it 'shouldn't be happening' as I've had to turn the sound off on both the laptop and the ipad when I'm on MN which means I can't MN as often (as I need the sound for other stuff).

I'll turn it back on and report it if I hear it again. Unfortunately I didn't pay any attention to which advert it was. 'Irritating' never influences me to buy anything :)
