But plenty of users have multiple accounts. The membership of MN would surely go down if they tried to clamp down on it. Some of those people have had multiple accounts for years and not necessarily because they are trolls or causing trouble.

I can't see why you would need to log in to a thread as multiple personas unless you are trying to cause trouble (or your point is so weak, that you feel you are the only one backing it up). In which case mnhq would be notified (posters report) and they would ban you. All usernames are linked to an ip address(indicates specific location and device) and email address(easily changed). It is possible to track a person if they wanted to. Using the Internet, apply the rules; 'if I wouldn't say it in real life, don't say it anywhere' and 'If I was identified in the media linked to these views /statements, how would it affect me, my family and our lives?'
Just look at how they tracked the mccann trolls. Just because you are behind a screen doesn't mean you can be reckless or that there won't be legal repercussions.

Sock puppeting and multiple accounts aren't the same thing, not always. Multiple accounts may not be used for posting on the same thread. I am sure there might be those using them for nefarious means but it isn't always the case.

These are the rooolz regarding name changing. We don't allow people to have multiple accounts, so if you have more than one account with us just drop us a line and we'll straighten things out (don't worry, you won't be in trouble - it's just the multiple accounts ring alarm bells at our end, so we don't want to jump to the wrong conclusion if it's just been a mistake on your part).

Generally, you can name change as frequently as you want, providing you don't do so in a way that breaks our talk guidelines, i.e posting to mislead or inflame.

So for example, it's perfectly legitimate for me to be posting in The Dog House about my Labrador under one name, and be discussing my husband's infidelity in Relationships as someone else.

If it comes to our attention that someone has major contradictions in their posts, then we will take things further. We do understand though, that sometimes people slightly fudge details, such as their location, or their DC's ages, in order to avoid being identified, so we always approach things on a case by case basis.

Bruce Wayne would be allowed multiple accounts because one would most discuss tool belts with Piglet John and the other would be in the long Haul Travel and S&B boards. And in their case it's for the greater good.

But I'd have to delete my accounts for Hullygully, Boffers, Pagwatch and Maryz, and talk to real people on the boards instead of my carefully constructed sockies?

The only reason I can think of having multiple accounts with different email addresses legitimately would be to hide one from a partner. Cos if they figure out your log in it doesn't matter if you've nc'd.

I created an account with a different email address because I wanted to post something that could have identified me and I couldn't work out how to name change.

Since then I have worked out how to and have gone back to my original account but changed my name to this because I love Doctor Who.

My point is... I had multiple logins because of my own ignorance, not to cause trouble.
