...is really really starting to annoy me on Mumsnet at the moment.

It seems to be creeping insidiously across the boards. I have no problem with acronyms or abbreviations but this is like listening to one of those radio stations where all they do is shout in a monotone.

Yes - feel the same way . I feel that it kind of puts a barrier between me and the person writing, when there shouldn't be a barrier there, iyswim.

Mum2FunkyDude · 04/09/2006 20:43

wht ya tlkg abt?

Mum2FunkyDude · 04/09/2006 20:43

Sorry absolutely rubish at txt speak...but couldn't resist. I don't even txt speak with sms!!!!

JackieNo · 04/09/2006 20:43

Pardon?

serenity · 04/09/2006 20:44

I can't/won't read it. I avoid threads where the title is in text speak, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Can't be good if someones posted looking for advice

beansprout · 04/09/2006 20:45

But it's also used in chat rooms and on message boards so it's not entirely out of place on a site like this.

LIZS · 04/09/2006 20:46

Don't do text speak, even when texting(!), and find it hard to read especially without punctuation or paragraphs. Tend not to bother to reply tbh.

SherlockLGJ · 04/09/2006 20:46

Text speak the last refuge of the inarticulate.

chocybickie · 04/09/2006 20:49

i'm officially bored of these threads.

beansprout · 04/09/2006 20:49

I'm with chockybikie. Please get over yourselves!!!!

WigWamBam · 04/09/2006 20:53

I can't abide it, I avoid threads with text speak in the title, and don't read posts that use it. It's not just the fact that it's lazy and inarticulate, there's just no need for it when you have an unlimited amount of space to put your post, and all the characters you could possibly want at your fingertips.

There was one a couple of weeks ago where the poster used "d" instead of "the" - I just can't understand why someone would do that. Not just to save two keystrokes, surely?

merrily · 04/09/2006 20:54

I don't see much text speak on MN

Just scanned down the list of active conversations and only one thread title under For Sale had any. Can't see that it's really a problem?

I find things like "parp" more irritating to be honest.

beansprout · 04/09/2006 20:56

Well, at least I can hide behind my keyboard and not be looked down on for my London accent and not speaking the Queen's English!

Blondilocks · 04/09/2006 21:08

I like how many ppl hav avoided threads with the title in txt spk when this one has exactly that!!

It doesn't bother me either way - can type quickly in proper english or in txt spk & can read both (although not so good on some of the more obscure abbreviations).

Was goin 2 put a long txt spk phrase but cldnt think of nethng!

CountessDracula · 04/09/2006 22:57

It makes you sound thick

expatinscotland · 04/09/2006 22:58

I don't have a mobile. So I can spot it, but it's all Greek to me.

edam · 04/09/2006 23:03

Oh, agree text speak is infuriating. Appropriate for texting, if you like that kind of thing and know the recipient does too. But not for websites when you have a full-sized Qwerty keyboard sitting right there in front of you and no restriction on the number of letters you use.

MamaG · 04/09/2006 23:04

I don't like it, I find it hard to understand [old biddy emoticon] and I don't use it in text messages - hell, I even use punctuation in texts!!

CountessDracula · 04/09/2006 23:05

Especially if it is a serious topic

I automatically ignore almost everything like this. However the other night there was a thread with a missing child, you would never have known from the name of it.

And YES it is common in a lot of places but I hope MN is not a lot of places

OH God I had to really bite my fingers not to post on that bloody thread CD...I thought it was a troll by the stupid title/text speak

expatinscotland · 04/09/2006 23:09

Yes, I must say, it ruins credibility.

B/c people are too busy trying to decipher the code to give a monkey's what the hell the point is.

JoolsToo · 04/09/2006 23:11

I don't like it but saying so tends to show your age I think

Turquoise · 04/09/2006 23:12

I am old and judgemental and I think it's for thickos.

CountessDracula · 04/09/2006 23:12

I really couldn't care about that!

Just type what you mean not some stupid crap
