Do you want to be a Mumsnet Local Editor?

108 replies

EmmaMumsnet · 17/10/2013 16:15

If you saw the last recruitment thread, we did well in getting people started& All over the country, Local Editors are beavering away at making your local site a useful hub for parents.

We are still looking for new Local Editors in some locations (see the helpful list at the bottom of the thread!). Read a little about the role below and if you're interested in finding out more please email [email protected] with 'interested in becoming a Local Editor' in the subject field. It helps if you tell us a bit about yourself in the email.

What's in the Local Editor role? Our current team of brilliant and dedicated Local Editors make sure their site is full of relevant listings, encouraging local Mumsnetters and businesses to post listings and reviews on the site and filling the gaps.

They also oversee Local Ambassadors, who are busy organising meet-ups, as well as encouraging community links locally. What Local Editors can't do is see anyone's private Mumsnet membership details or posting history (sorry, only the Community team are allowed in there).

We don't expect Local Editors to do all this for free; Local Editors get revenue from local advertising and offers.

We know we're not quite there with Local yet, but phase II is coming soon.

Some of the sites are still a bit empty, so take a look around our Manchester & Trafford Haringey or Surrey sites to see what they look like when they are populated with meet-ups, listings, local talk, offers, etc:

Ideally you would have had some experience in a media, advertising sales or organisational role and be able to spell, but bags of enthusiasm and strong community links can go a long way to making a local site a success.

Westmorland if your name gives a hint to your locality I've been thinking along the same lines. It's a v big county and can easily be focused to one corner that the rest don't bother with ( which is why we used to be two local groups)

I know, it really doesn't make sense that ours isn't split a bit more - if you lived in Barrow you could be in Manchester/ Liverpool in roughly the same amount of time it would take you to get to Carlisle at the other end of the county.

Similarly people in the South Lakes would be more likely to head to Lancaster etc for meet ups than say Carlisle/ Workington. It would work much better if there was some way to have three sub groups something like a South Lakes/ West Coast/ Penrith to Carlisle. Too many mountains in the way for it to work as a whole county.

@WestmorlandSausage

I would be interested in being involved in mine but a local editor was sorted in the last recruitment I think - is there any scope for others to have some kind of editing role also to help out? Unfortunately i'm also registered to an old username which I really don't want to use on there and it seems theres no option to change it to this one, so thats putting me off using it as well at the moment.

We can definitely help with the nickname change - do mails us.

Is this expanding out of the UK? There are lots of mumsnetters where I live in the Middle East!

@IvanaCake

My local site is deader than a very dead thing. It has a LE who introduced herself back in July. There appear to have been 2 meetups in a local park over the school holidays, which one other person attended. The LE hasn't posted anything in over a month.

Definitely no buzz being created! It's a shame because I know there are many mners in this area and I bet I'm not the only one who would like to see it do better. I've stopped looking in there now.

Thanks Ivana, I've pm'd you.

We would love to get meet-ups groups started in different areas of Cumbria. Only one person has volunteered so far for Penrith (and she's a bit lonely with only two joiners). The meet-ups pages are ready… we just need some volunteers :
local.mumsnet.com/cumbria/meet-ups

We realise Cumbria is a big county but the idea here and everywhere else is to have several meet-ups for each county, not just one. Every volunteer meet-ups organiser (we call them Local Ambassadors) gets a calling card and perks from time to time. What we ask the Local Editors to do is to meet up with the Local Ambassadors from time to time to exchange ideas and give them a steer on how they can help more if they want to.

And yes, anyone can get involved by adding listings for activities/cafes, etc that you love in the area, particularly things that will help other parents like great preschool groups, local attractions etc. Just click on the pink Add a Listing button under the nav bar on the right hand side (once we've sorted out your nickname). We're very much hoping that lots of Mumsnetters will do this so that the Local sites are packed with really useful info.

We've got two potentials for Tyneside and the first has said the paperwork is in the post. But if you email [email protected], we can add you to the list in case anything changes

I have recently taken over a large county LE. I have handed in my notice at work and am currently reading up and familiarising myself with the lay of the land, making sense of the advertising rates (which kind of don't make a lot of sense in the handbook re rates/page views etc) and will be overhauling my site in the next few days.

Don't assume nothing has been done because we/I cannot be bothered. I want to do it well, not half assed and because of that want to be conversant with the site and its failings before I rush in and make changes. I am approaching this professionally, not as a PT occupation.

See you all soon in my very large county.

I am LE of two areas in East Scotland, and am taking all feedback on board.

In the past few weeks, I haven't been quite as present as I would like to be, due to other commitments.

Am back now and will be working hard to get some meetups going and adding listings to the site.

We have local chat threads for Fife here, and Dundee Angus here, so do come along and tell me what you'd like me to do/organise.

I am also building up the Facebook for Dundee Angus and Fife Facebook here, and would welcome new followers.
