Do you want to be a Mumsnet Local Editor?

EmmaMumsnet · 17/10/2013 16:15

If you saw the last recruitment thread, we did well in getting people started& All over the country, Local Editors are beavering away at making your local site a useful hub for parents.

We are still looking for new Local Editors in some locations (see the helpful list at the bottom of the thread!). Read a little about the role below and if you're interested in finding out more please email [email protected] with 'interested in becoming a Local Editor' in the subject field. It helps if you tell us a bit about yourself in the email.

What's in the Local Editor role? Our current team of brilliant and dedicated Local Editors make sure their site is full of relevant listings, encouraging local Mumsnetters and businesses to post listings and reviews on the site and filling the gaps.

They also oversee Local Ambassadors, who are busy organising meet-ups, as well as encouraging community links locally. What Local Editors can't do is see anyone's private Mumsnet membership details or posting history (sorry, only the Community team are allowed in there).

We don't expect Local Editors to do all this for free; Local Editors get revenue from local advertising and offers.

We know we're not quite there with Local yet, but phase II is coming soon.

Some of the sites are still a bit empty, so take a look around our Manchester & Trafford Haringey or Surrey sites to see what they look like when they are populated with meet-ups, listings, local talk, offers, etc:

Ideally you would have had some experience in a media, advertising sales or organisational role and be able to spell, but bags of enthusiasm and strong community links can go a long way to making a local site a success.

@quoteunquote

How do you find out who the editor for your area, mine not up so assume it has gone.

You can pm me…

EmmaMumsnet · 17/10/2013 21:11

@FudgeyCookie

My local area doesn't even have an area on local! Closest we have is Exeter lol

There's Devon, Plymouth and Somerset as well as Exeter… Does that help? The only one of those without a Local Editor in place already is Plymouth. Does that help?

EmmaMumsnet · 17/10/2013 21:14

@RhondaJean

Emma I'm quite interested and my area is still on the list but in all the time I've been on MN I've only found two other people in my area!

There's only one way to get it going, and you know what I'm going to say… Grin

EmmaMumsnet · 17/10/2013 21:16

@magimedi

It's such a massive piece of work to get to the local site (let alone the name change).................

It isn't now you can choose a Home site and other favourites. Once you've chosen a Home site, you just click on Find a Local Site in the main site, and you're straight there. One click! Also, you can keep the same name in Local now – we changed the rules Wink

EmmaMumsnet · 17/10/2013 22:01

@RhondaJean

Ok Emma hint taken, I will email over the weekend!

Fantastic, I will be waiting Thanks Cake

EmmaMumsnet · 17/10/2013 22:20

@BeerTricksPotter

Mine's taken but it's still Dull As Dullsville in a Dullsville Drought.

You're obviously not posting there enough BeerTricks… But seriously, we know we've still got quite a bit of work to do. Whizzbang additions to come, honest.

EmmaMumsnet · 17/10/2013 23:37

@MarcelineTheVampireQueen

Irish one emma?

Republic of Ireland? We're just waiting for phase II of Local and we'll get those going. We know they've been a long time coming Blush

EmmaMumsnet · 18/10/2013 11:37

@MarmaladeBatkins

Can I throw my hat into the ring for Dudley, please?

I can't see an email Marmalade… Can you email [email protected] with 'interested in becoming a local editor' in the subject field and tell us a bit about yourself.

EmmaMumsnet · 18/10/2013 19:55

@AndHarry

My area's on there. I'd be fab (and modest :o) at putting up listings for local events, groups, services etc. but not the social side.

Local Editors don't absolutely have to organise local meet-ups (although it does help, especially initially). Volunteer meet-up co-ordinators called Local Ambassadors organise meet-ups where they live. It's good for Local Editors to meet with their Local Ambassadors once in a while though to see how they can help.

@WestmorlandSausage

I would be interested in being involved in mine but a local editor was sorted in the last recruitment I think - is there any scope for others to have some kind of editing role also to help out? Unfortunately i'm also registered to an old username which I really don't want to use on there and it seems theres no option to change it to this one, so thats putting me off using it as well at the moment.

We can definitely help with the nickname change - do mails us.

EmmaMumsnet · 20/10/2013 17:35

@Takingbackmonday

Can I do Merton ?

I can't see an email from you talkingback…

EmmaMumsnet · 20/10/2013 17:38

@IvanaCake

My local site is deader than a very dead thing. It has a LE who introduced herself back in July. There appear to have been 2 meetups in a local park over the school holidays, which one other person attended. The LE hasn't posted anything in over a month.

Definitely no buzz being created! It's a shame because I know there are many mners in this area and I bet I'm not the only one who would like to see it do better. I've stopped looking in there now.

Thanks Ivana, I've pm'd you.

EmmaMumsnet · 20/10/2013 17:59

@WestmorlandSausage

I know, it really doesn't make sense that ours isn't split a bit more - if you lived in Barrow you could be in Manchester/ Liverpool in roughly the same amount of time it would take you to get to Carlisle at the other end of the county.

Similarly people in the South Lakes would be more likely to head to Lancaster etc for meet ups than say Carlisle/ Workington. It would work much better if there was some way to have three sub groups something like a South Lakes/ West Coast/ Penrith to Carlisle. Too many mountains in the way for it to work as a whole county.

We would love to get meet-ups groups started in different areas of Cumbria. Only one person has volunteered so far for Penrith (and she's a bit lonely with only two joiners). The meet-ups pages are ready… we just need some volunteers :
local.mumsnet.com/cumbria/meet-ups

We realise Cumbria is a big county but the idea here and everywhere else is to have several meet-ups for each county, not just one. Every volunteer meet-ups organiser (we call them Local Ambassadors) gets a calling card and perks from time to time. What we ask the Local Editors to do is to meet up with the Local Ambassadors from time to time to exchange ideas and give them a steer on how they can help more if they want to.

And yes, anyone can get involved by adding listings for activities/cafes, etc that you love in the area, particularly things that will help other parents like great preschool groups, local attractions etc. Just click on the pink Add a Listing button under the nav bar on the right hand side (once we've sorted out your nickname). We're very much hoping that lots of Mumsnetters will do this so that the Local sites are packed with really useful info.

EmmaMumsnet · 20/10/2013 17:59

@AnnaKissed

Is this expanding out of the UK? There are lots of mumsnetters where I live in the Middle East!

Hi Anna, not at the moment, but never say never…

EmmaMumsnet · 22/10/2013 11:55

@WestmorlandSausage

urm so when you say mail you... how do I do that? Via messaging or my own email?

If you email [email protected] with 'interested in becoming a Local Editor' in the subject field then it's easy for us to find them Smile

EmmaMumsnet · 22/10/2013 11:57

@mousebacon

Can you clarify 'Tyneside' for me? I emailed last time but was told it was already covered... :-)

We've got two potentials for Tyneside and the first has said the paperwork is in the post. But if you email [email protected], we can add you to the list in case anything changes

EmmaMumsnet · 22/10/2013 12:00

@Delilahlilah

I have emailed regarding Swansea. Hope you have received it?

Yep got that one, the reply is in your inbox Wink

EmmaMumsnet · 22/10/2013 12:02

@ScoutJemAndBoooooooooooo

Oh dear, mine had local editor - confidential in the subject line. Will you still find it okay?

Yes, got that one Thanks
You'll have a reply by the end of today.

EmmaMumsnet · 22/10/2013 12:03

@ShadeofViolet

I would love to do Nottingham if its not already taken.

No-one's emailed in about Nottingham yet… Can you send an email in?

EmmaMumsnet · 23/10/2013 00:07

@janx

Has anyone tried to find local on the Mumsnet app? I gave up really quickly as I found 2 posts a year old Hmm

Local isn't working on the Mumsnet app currently. We reported this to Tech but they must have forgotten about it. We'll give them a prod.

Well, when we say not working, you can find the right site and topic if you're prepared to scan through, but we're aware that they are in a muddle and it's over-complicated!

EmmaMumsnet · 23/10/2013 11:17

@Hanginggardenofboobylon

A friend of mine has recently taken over our local site, the LE's really need people to get over there and start talking to one another, sharing ideas and reviewing local businesses. Its a two-way thing the LE's cant do it on their own.

What about featuring a local site with a sticky each month MNHQ?

And please prod tech hard to sort out the app, as I rarely go on the main site, I use either an ipad mini or iphone to MN and the local sites are impossible to access on there. I don't think this will be the success it needs to be without sorting the app.

Hi Hanging, Tech have been duly prodded! We feature a local site on the Home Page each week (this week it's Tower Hamlets), but it's a good idea to sticky a thread too.
