Thread deletion getting on my nerves

2 replies

Snog · 25/11/2012 06:36

Seems like thread deletion is becoming much more common on mumsnet and i find it annoying that threads i have taken time to post on disappear as if they had never existed. Can we not just delete inappropriate posts?
Why does the whole thread need to go?

A fine Sunday morning to you all
Just to clear up a few things:-
We absolutely are not the Gestapo Shock

There have been occasional references to the Secret Service with regards to trolls truckers and the general hairy of hand inasmuch we don't like to give out our methods of why we may ban someone.

With regards to deletions of threads and indeed posts we're sorry if you think that.

@YankTeeDoodleDanTee

HQ always, so far as I know, post a message saying the thread is going to go. Sometimes they even say why.

If you miss that, of course, you're out of luck.

YankTeeDoodleDantee is correct, we have indeed been trying to be much more transparent of late, as per the discussion on this very topic last month with Justine and Helen

Hope this clears up a few things
Peace and love
MNHQ

@Snog

I just want to know what threads were deleted and why, that is all

The thread title and a generic reason for deletion would be sufficient for me.
I am not objecting to thread deletion but to the process of thread deletion.

There is lack of transparency here and the current situation is too Big Brother in style for my liking. Appreciate that this may be for technical rather than ideological reasons. Mumsnet used imo to be far more liberal on the subject of censorship and things seem to have shifted.

Sorry but we do disagree with you on this one, Snog.

We almost always post with an explanation for deletion prior to deleting a thread - and we try to leave that explanation up for as long as possible before actually deleting.

We also, when deleting a thread, type up a message that displays the reason for deletion, should you call up the thread url again.

We realise that this doesn't work very helpfully if you tend to view threads through Threads I'm On - but we have asked Tech to look at that and fix some way for the deletion message to display in Threads I'm On, too.

But, of course, if you're ever confused, you are most welcome to mail in to MNHQ and we will always be happy to fill you in on what happened and why a thread was deleted.

We appreciate that you may not always be happy with our decisions to delete but we really don't think we are Big Brother or the Gestapo or even untransparent.
