There is a very real problem on Mumsnet that there are a small group of posters who wilfully ignore this "rule" as and when it suits them. I think the problem is now institutionalised in MN as being the norm and acceptable.

These people just make stuff up about people they've never met. Once they do this other people pile in believing the bullshit, and then acting on it. The troll-hunters also don't seem to stop and think how their assumptions might affect - or even damage the rest of the site. Lets summarise their position: " I am OUTRAGED and APPALLED by something that may or may not have happened but can't be proved, because although I say it did, I won't provide any evidence"

Sometimes this place is more like a bear pit rather than a community of support and OBJECTIVE thinking and response.

They have their bit of fun and when their target gives up - off course they do having been hounded unmercifully - the Hunter claim that proves they were a troll. Disagree with the unters and sooner rather than later they will accuse you of being a man (their ultimate insult) or a troll. A suggestion that you should leave the site usually follows.

The "silent majority" don't put up with this. They just leave...

What I don't get is the hypocrisy (so to speak) of Ops argument. Now Op appeared all of her sudden and her very first comment was that we should not be surprised or upset about threads as it is common knowledge that most of it is made up.

There was some discussion about this on the other thread. Then she starts this one, talking solely about the damage done by troll hunters. I still do NOT get and Op has never explained, how someone who believes most of it is made up can be so concerned about trolls and troll hunters.

If it is all rubbish, why would you care?

The ONLY explanation I can come up with is that she objects to troll hunters for another reason.

a) because I accept that some of it isn't made up and other people here believe that most isn't made up
b) because there is a well explained policy written by the site owners on troll hunting that a small group of people keep ignoring
c) because this group is allowed to break the rules multiple times each month without HQ staff taking firmer action
d) because the reputation of Mumsnet is being damaged by the current situation

Trolls do immense damage. Some of MN trolls in the past have been huge drains on the emotional wellbeing of the people they target, who try to help. I was deeply taken in by one- I don't regret that time spent talking to her late into the night as I hope it shows I am a decent person, willing to lend an ear. It did make me more cynical, so I stay more neutral now.

I don't usually condone trollhunting- as there are quite a few times where someone who does need support gets harassed rather than the help and support they need or even just space to vent. However, when the same person has been reported over and over or by many different people and there appears to be nothing done about it then suspicions do get put out there for all to see. Some people do then start to wonder.

"Words on a screen" is bullshit. Yes, they are words. It isn't a robot typing them from a set script. It's another human who has perhaps set out to cause anger and upset just because they can. In many cases because they think it's funny.

If someone has been reported over and over to mn towers and they are still here then clearly they have looked at this persons history from all points of view and decided that there is not an issue

so why would you then shout troll at that person?? that seems like persecution to me.. if you report someone and nothing happens drop mn towers an email and ask them
