has it always been there? or has it moved? and does that mean if someone 'likes' that thread it will be posted to their fb page?

Yes, it does, CarolCervix. All a bit modern, innit?

You don't have to click it if you don't want to, you know Xmas Smile

LittleTownofBethleHelenMumsnet · 15/12/2011 16:51

@fuckityfuckfuckfuck

I accidentally clicked one yesterday. Was swiftly deleted from my FB page and cursed appropriately. WHY does every damn article and now thread have a like button? I don't want everyone to know what I'm wasting time doing reading.

It wasn't there yesterday - honest!

LittleTownofBethleHelenMumsnet · 15/12/2011 16:52

@CarolCervix

so if i do a good long post ranting about my orrible family and someone 'likes' that post it pops up on FB in all its glory for the whole fb world to see?

and therefore makes it even more easier for the worls to work out who i am and even more identifiable?

No, it doesn't like any posts. It's just for liking the thread.

As in "this is a good thread"

LittleTownofBethleHelenMumsnet · 15/12/2011 16:57

@fuckityfuckfuckfuck

It was! It was on a competition page, I entered and accidentally clicked the like button. Well, it was some kind of like button, even if it was teeny. I know noone will know who you are, but god, the potential for fallout if you press it accidentally and don't realise is pretty big. Luckily it was just a Ford competition, I realised my stupidity and deleted the link from my wall. But imagine liking a thread about bumsex something mortifying, or personal, or someone else's private thread, and the whole world seeing it. Are there areas where there is no like button so this can;t happen? I'm thinking relationships and bereavement.

Aha! Yes, there are like buttons on Comps pages, I believe.

But the Talk threads like button was only made live a few minutes ago.

And no, there's no like button on threads in 'sensitive' topics, like Bereavement or Relationships and so on.

LittleTownofBethleHelenMumsnet · 15/12/2011 16:59

@LauraIngallsWilder

I thought we all agreed a few weeks ago that we hated the idea of a 'like' button - so why gave MNHQ gone ahead anyway?

We were talking about a button for liking posts, then, weren't we, LauraIngallWilder?

LittleTownofBethleHelenMumsnet · 15/12/2011 17:02

@hippoCritt

Traumatised at the thought people will know what my working at home actually involves sitting reading MN, more scary on the iPad one move by one finger I often catch links in error

Panic not! Tis a two-stage process: when you click it (on purpose or by accident), you get a pop-up window, asking if you want to post your like to Facebook. You can then click cancel if your finger slipped...

LittleTownofBethleHelenMumsnet · 15/12/2011 17:04

@fuckityfuckfuckfuck

Incidentally, the more people click the 'like' link of the comp pages, the more people will enter presumably, hence the less chance I you will win. Just saying Wink Don't click that like button folks.

Mebbe but the more people enter our comps, the better prizes we can strongarm persuade companies to stump up for us to give away....

LittleTownofBethleHelenMumsnet · 15/12/2011 17:23

@sassyTHEFIRST

Question: Is this about money HQ? Are you paid by FB/their advertisers for each linkage? IF not (even IF) can we get rid please?

No, we're not paid for each link. Absolutely not.

LittleTownofBethleHelenMumsnet · 15/12/2011 17:23

@MoreBeta

Can we have a 'hate' button too to balance it up?

There is a Yin and a Yang to everything in life.

Xmas Grin

LittleTownofBethleHelenMumsnet · 15/12/2011 17:25

@SanTEEClaus

Helen, I just tested it. No, you don't get a pop up. It just likes it and posts it to your wall...

Oh dear. Well, you certainly should do. And it's certainly coming up for some people.

We'll ask the Tech people to have a look and try to figure out why it's not coming up for others.

LittleTownofBethleHelenMumsnet · 15/12/2011 17:46

@LauraIngallsWilder

Semper - good idea but what makes you think they will listen - we disliked the like posts idea a few weeks ago and now they have gone ahead anyway :(

and see fit to crack jokes at those of us who hate it....

I'm off to to name change :(

Laura, my apologies for being flippant to you. It wasn't meant the way you read it but I shouldn't have posted that and I am Blush

LittleTownofBethleHelenMumsnet · 15/12/2011 17:49

Afraid I have to go home and shout at my children to conjure up some domestic bliss, so please don't think we've just cut and run out on you all.

RebeccaMumsnet will be around later on to field the outcry try to answer your questions.

And thanks for all your feedback so far. We are listening and we will take all you say on board.

LittleTownofBethleHelenMumsnet · 15/12/2011 17:54

@WhoopsyLa

I also want to know what Tufty asked.....I like the fact that nobody on MN knows me and I keep my FB seperate...for real life people that are my mates...If I post something here and someone likes it...will it come up on my FB page? I can easily avoid the like button myself..but what if someone likes a post I make???

I dont like FB and MN being linked. It's all directly to benefit MN. Nobody else. I don't think I will stick around on MN now...not that I'll be a big loss...I've been here a year now under various names but I always avoid sites linked to FB.

No, if someone likes a thread, it comes up on their Facebook page.

And the 'like' refers to the thread in its entirety, not anyone's post within it.

(Sorry, really am off now)

RebeccaHallsWithBoughsOMumsnet · 16/12/2011 09:34

@VivaLeBeaver

Not liking it. It's all very well saying well don't click it but scrolling on an iPad its easy to press a bit too hard and accidentally click something.

If I did click it how does it know who I am on Facebook or would I have to then give my Facebook details so it can post on my wall?

Morning all,

Tech are looking into previously raised issues about the like button not popping out for everyone but while they look at that, if you accidentally click on the 'like' tab and you are already signed into Facebook (or have your cookies enabled to do it automatically) and no pop-up window appears then the thread you are on will be linked to from your Facebook page.

If you want to remove it, you can hover back over the 'like' tab and click on the X and it will unlike the thread both here and on Facebook or you could go to Facebook and manually remove.

We just wanted to clarify this, we will be back shortly to face the music to answer your Q's Xmas Smile

Best wishes
MNHQ

HarktheHelenMumsnetAngelsSing · 16/12/2011 10:02

Morning all.

Apols for not reappearing last night - I had a RL family drama to strop about sort out.

Anyhow, just to add to RebeccaMumsnet's recent post about how the Tech team are beavering like mad to sort out the problem with the pop-up - and how you can delete 'accidental' likes - we also wanted to repeat to (and, hopefully, reassure) those who didn't see our earlier posts that the Like button is NOT available on 'sensitive' topics, such as Miscarriage, SN, Mental Health, Bereavement and Relationships.

We've had a few requests to extend that to include Forces Sweethearts - and we will look into that.

We'll also look into removing the Like button from old threads - as some of you have requested.

I have to go to the dentist now but will be back fairly shortly.

Please do keep posting. As we hope you all know, we can take it always welcome feedback.

HarktheHelenMumsnetAngelsSing · 16/12/2011 10:03

@FootprintsInTheSnow

The tickers are coming!!!

Be warned!!!

The huns are here!!!!

(Goes to sit in shed wearing a tin foil hat.)

No, they are most definitely not.

RebeccaHallsWithBoughsOMumsnet · 16/12/2011 12:00

@bubby64

Also, I can access MN at work, and not FB, so if I made a mistake, I couldn't correct it for up to 12 hrs!!! Help!!

Hi bubby,

You could correct it via MN, just re-click the X on the 'like' tab and it will disappear from Facebook too.

HarktheHelenMumsnetAngelsSing · 16/12/2011 12:21

Hello. No conspiracy in the silence from us, folks.

I was just at the dentist, as posted earlier

HarktheHelenMumsnetAngelsSing · 16/12/2011 12:28

Right

First of all, apologies for...

a) shocking you all with this change

b) not having it working properly from the outset

That's obviously not good Xmas Blush and we should have managed it all better.

Having said that (and meaning it), we had no idea it would cause such a rumpus. You see, the same 'like' option has been available for ages in the Viewport bar (the bar that drops down at the top of threads - which you can hide, if you like).

All we've done is replicate the Facebook part of it under the thread title, too.

HarktheHelenMumsnetAngelsSing · 16/12/2011 12:30

@TheOriginalFAB

I accept I am totally naive but why "only looking" at removing the stupid like button from Forces Sweethearts? People have requested it so why can't it be done? Does MNHQ miss out on something if FS does not have the button and I can't help worrying about security issues with FS posts being all over FB with regard to partners being on active service.

We're looking at it because we're not sure we can actually "do" it today - tech-wise. Don't want to say we're going to do something and then not be able to do it straightaway.

HarktheHelenMumsnetAngelsSing · 16/12/2011 12:35

@Millicano

HOPE YOU HAVE MANY MANY FILLINGS HELENMUMSNET, WITHOUT ANAESTHETIC Grin

Nope, am officially dentally perfect

HarktheHelenMumsnetAngelsSing · 16/12/2011 12:37

@StupidLikeButton

How long is "ages" and what "viewport bar"?

It's the slide bar thingie (technical) that slides down at the top when you're looking at threads.

If you can't see it, you've probably hidden it. Go into Customise/Other Options/Hide the viewport bar (A.K.A. slide bar) and select "No".

It's been there about 9 months, I reckon....

HarktheHelenMumsnetAngelsSing · 16/12/2011 12:38

@Millicano

Veneers darling?

No, crooked and tea-stained but no holes (right now)

HarktheHelenMumsnetAngelsSing · 16/12/2011 12:39

@IAmFuckingPissedOff

You really need to look at the list of topics very quickly.

And removing it from pre-existing threads.

At least Hmm.

Yes, I've already posted to say that we are looking at both of these.

Will report back once I know what we can actually do when.

HarktheHelenMumsnetAngelsSing · 16/12/2011 12:40

@StupidLikeButton

A link is not a "like" is it? YThe Like button is different to a link.

They're both "Like" buttons, really. The one in the Viewport bar says "share" when you hover over it but it does exactly the same thing (posts the thread title to your Facebook wall)
