Dark version of MN for reading in the dark

Is this a really daft/difficult to implement idea?

I am lying next to DH, MNing on my iPhone and he is grumbling that I am disturbing him. On both twitter and kindle apps I can switch to dark screen with white text when I use phone in bed.

Is this something that might be possible for the iPhone app or the mobile site?

And can we call it Stealth Mode?

This isn't especially tricky, I threw this together in a few minutes whilst waiting for lunch to cook (copy & paste into address bar when viewing a mobile site page):

javascript:void($('head').append(''))

Unfortunately, iPhones don't do custom CSS, so we'd have to implement this server-side for it to work. If enough people clamour for it though, I'm sure we could look at adding an option for it.

So go ahead and clamour. If enough people think this would be a good idea, we can consider it further. Wink

Its a great idea - please implement it:-)

MmeLindor. · 30/07/2011 15:04

Oh, you are clever.

Would it be any easier to implement in an android app?

bloodymumps · 30/07/2011 15:10

I have the same problem- DP moans if I MN in bed for too long, but he always likes to go to sleep straight away whereas I like to faff about for ages. So I would love this- would you just do it as an app update?

HoneyPablo · 30/07/2011 15:25

What are you doing on mn in bed? I don't blame your DPs for complaining.

RustyBear · 30/07/2011 15:25

More clamour here...

OvO · 30/07/2011 15:26

Ooo, clever idea. I want. Pretty please.

RustyBear · 30/07/2011 15:29

Actually, if you look in Settings- General- Accessibilty, there is a White on black mode for the iPad/iPhone which also turns the blue bars orange and the purple bits of MN a rather fetching green....

MmeLindor. · 30/07/2011 15:30

Honey
Just recording his score for the Mumsnet Friday Night competition. Haven't you played yet? Tsk tsk.

It actually turns everything negative, so I'd call it Dalek Death-ray mode....

VivaLeBeaver · 30/07/2011 15:36

Clamours away.

PaperView · 30/07/2011 15:38

I didn't know there was a special way to do it, i usually just turn the screen brightness down Blush

OvO · 30/07/2011 15:44

Rusty I've just changed my iPad to those settings and it is weeeeeird!

Poor Damian is a poo brown colour now. Grin

MmeLindor. · 30/07/2011 17:28

Oh, this is strange, Rusty. Good tip

Ohhh please. :) It means I can beg for advice on how to escape hospital talk on MN when I go to hospital to give birth. :)

BertieBotts · 30/07/2011 19:40

It would be useful when you're on a marathon breastfeed-to-sleep and you happen to have a nosy toddler as well :) (Past that stage now but it would have been VERY handy)

MmeLindor. · 30/07/2011 21:57

Any more?

I think it would be great yes please

trixymalixy · 30/07/2011 22:10

I'm sitting in DDs room trying to get her to go to sleep, with the brightness on my iPad turned right down. Stealth mode would be very handy right now!!

1gglePiggle · 30/07/2011 22:11

Yes would be good for sitting in dark waiting for dd to fall asleep without the light disturbing her. Looked on my iPhone but doesn't seem to have accessibility under general :(

MmeLindor. · 30/07/2011 22:27

I have discovered that I can toggle the home button to switch to stealth mode in the accessibility bit. Clicking home three times switches between normal and stealth mode.
