Your adverts are getting worse

I like Mumsnet, i really do but i do not want adverts for Russian girlfriends or the ability to get 'ripped' in 4 weeks. I don't know how these ads get on here - maybe I've read too many bumsex threads, but i don't want them. Give me something wholesome and boring.
Thanks

I can't imagine those are MN supplied adverts somehow! I've got ella's kitchen!
Are they in a popup? Must be from your browser, not actually online with the MN page, surely.

DirtyMartini · 17/03/2011 20:02

Never anything like that on my MN screens!

DirtyMartini · 17/03/2011 20:03

(although I came close to posting a rant about the fecking Emma Bridgewater Sale banner after the millionth week of looking at it)

oneofsuesylvesterscheerios · 17/03/2011 20:04

Yes, I think these might not be endorsed by mumsnet! (although when you get a load of the MacDonalds adverts you might be forgiven for this mistake)

Beasknees · 17/03/2011 20:20

i'm currently staring at one midway between the box for Active and discussions of the day and the Mumsnet latest. This one is for a charming company called anastasia-international.com.

Maybe Mumsnet rent out the space or it's one of those viral things that picks up on similar sites you've been looking at but as a mum to 3 small children i don't ever look at sites for perfect matches or hot new girlfriends.

I also get a lot of annoying 'click on this box' to win an i-phone 'you are the 10000000th person to click on here' 'you are a winner' type ads too

What browser are you using?

I don't have any of those sorts of ads or pop-ups, I use Firefox.

fivegomadinthelambingshed · 17/03/2011 20:23

I have luxury family hotels, do you think your computer may be corrupted?

Panzee · 17/03/2011 20:24

I've got ads for Boden, a mumnset book and mumsnet wine.

All very mumsnet-approved!

Beasknees · 17/03/2011 20:26

Me too.

OP posts:
CrispyTheCrisp · 17/03/2011 20:26

I have Boden, Mark Warner & Red Nose Day. Maybe they are specially selected for each individual poster Wink

Beasknees · 17/03/2011 20:26

i suspect it is!

MavisEnderby · 17/03/2011 20:26

I have Babybel cheese ads with those two twerps from kids tv wearing red noses. Now THAT is annoying.:o

WillieWaggledagger · 17/03/2011 20:27

i have never had any of those adverts on here! at the moment there's a very lively dick and dom one

theyoungvisiter · 17/03/2011 20:28

Beasknees that sounds like something is wrong!

All I've got in between the mumsnet latest and the Active box is an ad for the Mumsnet baby guides. I just refreshed and got Luxury family hotels. It rotates between about six very innocuous ads and in all my time on MN I have NEVER NEVER seen an ad like the ones you described.

Could your browser have got a virus or something? Confused

Boilable · 17/03/2011 20:28

are you using Internet Explorer, perchance?

CrispyTheCrisp · 17/03/2011 20:28

I am using IE and have none of that

frankie3 · 17/03/2011 20:30

I have only got adverts for Mark Warner today and have never had any adverts like those you are getting ( and I am on MN a lot!).

theyoungvisiter · 17/03/2011 20:34

Does anyone remember - there used to be a gateway site called pornify (I think it was) where it inserted random porny phrases and images into any innocuous webpage you chose to suggest - so you could pornify things like the BBC news site, or the Number10 homepage.

Maybe you've accidentally pornified MN - though not sure anyone would tell the difference on a Friday night.

Beasknees · 17/03/2011 20:38

have just cleared cookies/cache etc and now looks a little tamer!

theyoungvisiter · 17/03/2011 20:43

But it's weird that something was able to hack the ad slot on MN at all. Mumsnet HQ choose the ads on this page - it's not like some websites where they just allow google to put up any old random ad relating to your last search.

You should only be seeing the ads that MNHQ have selected - ie not "ripped.com" or whatever. Maybe tech will come on and explain it to us non-techie types.

DirtyMartini · 17/03/2011 21:25

Even though I don't have this issue I'm very curious about what the tech people have to say. It's so odd.

OP, have you got anything like CCleaner (free download here? I'd highly recommend it. We had a bad malware infection a few years ago and we are more careful now. That program is really quick, really effective and frequently updated to catch new bad stuff. And it's not invasive or annoying to have on your computer. You just run it whenever you fancy, takes a few seconds and shows you everything it deletes - we do it every few days.

DirtyMartini · 17/03/2011 21:26

Hasten to add it's not a replacement for firewall, antivirus etc.

RebeccaMumsnet · 17/03/2011 21:37

No, these are definitely not MN friendly ads.

We will flag to Tech and see if they have any advice for you.

and just because I haven't had the chance and it will soon disappear, Happy St.Patrick's day all Shamrock

WillieWaggledagger · 17/03/2011 21:40

would be funny if MNHQ put the idea of McDonalds ads up for debate, but happily ran ads for Russian brides without question Grin

DirtyMartini · 17/03/2011 21:41

Shock Shamrock Grin
