If you have two mins to spare, please could you have a look at this page and let us know what you think about this sort of visual representation of data?

We've chosen a slightly random topic as a 'taster' example, but it could, for example, be widened to include more foods, so you can see what's getting more/less expensive in your weekly shop? Or to show what's happening to the price of children's clothing?

Or would data on money-related stuff eg utility bills, or interest rates on mortgages/credit cards etc be useful?

Please let us know what you think.

And thanks to Simon Briscoe at Timetric for compiling and supplying the graphs.

By the way, the buttons at the top right of each graph show how you can manipulate them (zoom in to one particular date etc).

I like it but then again I am a bit of a nerdy nerd who loves graphs for my data - DH who is more language oriented looked at the page and got that really blank look he normally gets when I ask him to change a nappy!

I like graphs.

So cooking applesused to be more per kg than eating apples, but are now less?

Your y-axes need labels. 200 what? Pence, presumably.

what would you do with the information?

also... where does the information come from? i mean for this particular example, where do they get their data?
is part of the change in price due to offers? ie, tesco regularly raise prices and then lower them so things appear to be "on offer"

how will this data help us???

  1. I don't know what the 'Multiple Axes' is supposed to show.
How would I use it?
  1. It would be clearer if there were solid circles in the key instead of hollow.
  2. ... to scoff bananas, because they seem to be getting cheaper ...
I can't see the evidence for this in the graphs.
  1. It would be helpful if, when hovering over the data line, the key for that line would pop up (like the data value does).
  2. The zoom in function seems to work OK.

I'm not keen on the seasonal variation in the grape price. Sure - it's interesting but if you are interested in trends over 10 years could you not just use an annual average? Make the graph easier to read

Need to make sure that the minimum values are labelled on the axes

Could you do something similar comparing the different costs for various kinds of fresh fish? Given the recent interest in what's happening to our fisheries I think that would be very useful.

I'd also like to see similar treatments for energy costs and also insurance - car insurance has been very volatile over the last few years.

Lovely to look at, thankyou but I'm not entirely sure what this is for.

I know apples cost more than they used to but I still buy them iyswim.

If you could have one saying how many defections we have had to and from NetMums that would be interesting. Grin

or one comparing and collating our monthly cycles.

I would be interested in a graph showing seasonal variations in price and wonder whether that would help people to buy more in-season stuff??

I have no problem with this way of presenting data. There is some duplication (the main graph at the end is a bit of a WHAM after the smaller ones) and I'd present the full data first then break it down gradually.

Median prices over the year would be useful too - these graphs plot prices regardless of season which is very aaaa! when it comes to the grapes!

Also how this relates to food miles would interest me (for your specific fruit example!)
ie a plot of fruit prices and where they come from... we try and eat seasonally.
