If you have two mins to spare, please could you have a look at this page and let us know what you think about this sort of visual representation of data?

We've chosen a slightly random topic as a 'taster' example, but it could, for example, be widened to include more foods, so you can see what's getting more/less expensive in your weekly shop? Or to show what's happening to the price of children's clothing?

Or would data on money-related stuff eg utility bills, or interest rates on mortgages/credit cards etc be useful?

Please let us know what you think.

And thanks to Simon Briscoe at Timetric for compiling and supplying the graphs.

By the way, the buttons at the top right of each graph show how you can manipulate them (zoom in to one particular date etc).

Cheers Wine

I like the graphs. Simple to read and the zoom tool is quite nifty. Agree with others about axis.

I couldn't look at the graphs on my iPhone. The first one opens up fine, but as soon as I try to do anything (zooming, moving around) Safari freezes and I have to reboot.

I found the colours quite confusing and kept getting them mixed up as I had to keep moving my eyes off the graph to the key.

Lots of positive comments, but I think we need a 'thick' emoticon just for me.

I'm not mathematically minded and I don't like fruit... so looking at these graphs makes me Confused - I know everything's getting more expensive, and personally I don't need a graph to tell me.

Sorry, because obviously someone had lots of fun worked very hard on those graphs. Smile

HildegardVonBlingen · 07/02/2011 20:27

I don't see the point of any kind of graph. But then again, I don't like graphs and feel they are far too nerdy for my liking (I just can't bring myself to care enough to compare things - I either like them and want to buy them, or I don't). DH would probably like the graphs, though, for the same reason that he always reads Which before buying anything. Grin

Pie charts are good

I like the graphs, although I don't understand the multiple axes option.

If this is a third-party "solution" I wouldn't pay a lot for it if your only use is going to be communicating data to us lot. Must be better things to spend your money on? Free biscuits for all? Boost the Secret Santa coffers?

If it's going to be used internally as well it would potentially be more useful.

It would be interesting to see a graph of (say) number of AIBU posts plotted against time / alcohol consumption ...

flamingtoaster · 07/02/2011 22:10

Easy to understand.

QuintessentialShadows · 08/02/2011 08:45

Love the graphs.

I can see how this would be useful for insurance, utility rates from different suppliers, local school league tables and ofsted rating, not sure I would bother about fruitprices so much though......

Absolutely - Geraldine has just made Norman's point perfectly - much as I love Wine, it just does not go with Biscuits

WE WANT [TEA] (well, [COFFEE] in my case, but something in a mug anyway)

No need to say 'uk retain price index' for every line -- just state the source or sources and mark each item with an asterix or other symbol. (Too many words in the key) For that matter, no need for 'average price' either. The third graph has way too much information.

Plus -- the different fruits represented should each have a colour that's actually related to the fruits themselves. Apples should have a red line. Bananas should have a yellow line. Cooking apples maybe dark green, pears maybe yellow green, grapefruit should be pink, oranges should be orange, avocadoes could be brown I suppose. Grapes purple. Makes it easier to follow visually.

Actually, bar graphs might be a lot more effective in delivering the information.
