The interactive dettol adverts are ruining my mumsnet - how can I get rid of them?

Nightmare annoying things with their scary music and loud volume. I can't work out how to exit/close/shut them up and have been forced to mute my laptop volume. This is a problem because I like to listen to stuff on the radio through the computer whilst mumsnetting. How can I get rid of these insanely annoying intrusions?

This must be an error surely - absurd - I thought aliens had taken over my compute.r

CloudsAway · 17/01/2011 10:05

knew there'd be a proper thread somewhere not just the one in Chat. This is driving me mad this morning. Every time you click on a new message, it's a chance for a new ad, and it keeps coming back at me. Loud and annoying and there's NO WAY to turn it off! I thought that was against advertisting/web design standards, that you were best not to put background sounds on in the first place (make it opt in) but if you did, make a very very obvious opt-out/sound off button. That stays off even if you go to another frame/ad/part of the site.

It keeps coming back, and there's no way I'm browsing here with that on all the time, and I'm not muting my computer all the time either.

I'm using Firefox, and I have an ad blocker, but obviously not a strong enough one. I didn't mind the still/picture ads. I get irritated enough at the moving/video ones, as reasonably often they hang the site as they get caught up in some loading error. But these, with sound, are the end of it.

This is interesting: when I closed down iPlayer (haing decded to give up listening to Woman's Hour in competition with OCD anti-germs propaganda)the Dettox ad closed down too -- I closed it down by clicking to close iPlayer. Weird.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 17/01/2011 10:09

So glad I'm not the only one pissed off with this. I have been unable to post on some threads because I just can't bear to be shouted at by that person about sodding sodding Dettol. No I don't want any of it. Have never seen a noisy advert that couldn't be shushed before.

ANNOYING. FACT.

prettybird · 17/01/2011 10:09

Don't mind "silent" ads (Mumsnet has to cover its running costs somehow) but ones with noise are really annoying. :(

OnlyMeUK · 17/01/2011 10:11

Just to add my 2p worth, I was reading the forums while listening to the radio, then up it jumps! How annoying! I had to disable flash player in Firefox just to carry on!

ProfYaffle · 17/01/2011 10:11

Looney - Funnily enough I'm on Chrome, I downloaded their ad blocker ages ago. From memory I think I just Googled 'Chrome ad blocker' and followed the instructions.

UnquietDad · 17/01/2011 10:11

Pan: did you nag it away in a "shrill" voice? Wink

pozzled · 17/01/2011 10:13

AArgh. DD (2) who is not very well is sat on my lap watching Bob the Builder on the same screen as my MN. After the third interruption I have just been informed:

'I want the slit blang cleaner Mummy'

This is not good at all.

Pan · 17/01/2011 10:15

oddly, no. I just used the constant drone option, with "And another thing.." on occasion, just when it thought I'd finished.

Rollmops · 17/01/2011 10:21

It hasn't gone away and seems to follow me around to bleeping Ocado[shock} site.
I'd like to take this opportunity to solemnly declare that I (nor anyone in my family - for the threat of being bitten in half by yours truly) shall never purchase another product from the makers of this utterly UTTERLY annoying advertisement.
Angry

falsemessageoflethargy · 17/01/2011 10:22

I havent had any - most odd.

werewolf · 17/01/2011 10:24

false - I didn't have any until I said that! Grin

RebeccaMumsnet · 17/01/2011 10:27

There was an error with these ads, apologies.
Tech have had a look and it should all be fixed now.

Rumpleneckskin · 17/01/2011 10:28

These ads are driving me insane! AAAaaaarrghh!

Pan · 17/01/2011 10:35

Tech has had a look. Unless Tech is a plural, of course.[sailing close to the wind in trying someone's patience emocion]

wannaBe · 17/01/2011 10:42

my dh disabled all scripts on mn pages for me a couple of months ago after something or other slowed it down to the point of mn being unuseable. Fortunately for me this was just before another advert installed malware or a virus (I can't remember which?) on a number of mn'ers' computers... Hmm

Thus I am fortunate to get absolutely no adverts ha ha ha.

But tbh I think that this is not good enough - in the past month it seems that one advert has infected users's computers and now you have others popping up at random with sound and everything and impacting on users' experience.

Maybe we should all just boycott mn until the adverts go away. Grin

RebeccaMumsnet · 17/01/2011 10:47

Tech is plural Grin

As in blanket name for several folks who work in our tech shed department.

Pan · 17/01/2011 10:48

thought I'd save myself with that caveat!

thanks for sorting it.

Northernlurker · 17/01/2011 18:34

Crikey - went off to work and I see I wasn't alone in being a mite vexed.

Thanks so much for fixing it!
