Does my perfect travel mug exist?

VikingNorthUtsire · 18/10/2026 09:20

I feel like I have tried so many travel mugs and none of them have ever worked for me 😔 (DH reckons I am just a travel mug princess but indulge me please)

Is there such a thing as a mug that:

  • keeps drinks hot for an hour or two
  • doesn't leak
  • doesn't have a horrible taste? (I don't drink coffee so looking for a mug to contain either tea with milk, or chai latte)

I have had many, many mugs that fulfill 2 of the three. Ceramic ones which tasted decent but didn't keep drinks hot. Leak-proof ones which kept my drinks hot but made them taste awful.

Maybe it doesn't exist but I'm hoping someone can recommend a holy grail mug 🙏

Sho do good mugs but if you want a cheaper one I found the Dunelm ones to be good too. We even left one on the car roof for a while and it didn't leak....

beigetriangle · 18/10/2026 09:24

I have a great one from emsa that would fill the brief.
they all taste funny at first though. that goes away after a few brews.

Cat4324 · 18/10/2026 09:25

Circular are quite good for this, no weird taste and leak proof. I 'season' mine by filling it with boiling water and leaving it for a few hours to release any random tastes in the cup before washing it the first time but after that it just needs normal washing

JamesFrond · 18/10/2026 09:25

Yes as I am also the queen of travel mugs. Brace yourself though as it’s not cheap.

However, it keeps the drink hot for hours and hours, has an enamel inside so no metallic taste, looks good, doesn’t leak and can go in the dishwasher. I’ve had mine for years.

You can get them in lots of places but this link shows the colours.

Contigo or Zojirushi.

Wheniswinenight · 18/10/2026 09:50

I love my Stanley Aerolight. Doesn’t leak and keeps tea/coffee hot for ages. I had tea in it yesterday and it was lovely. No weird taste. I’m really fussy about tea! It fits perfectly in my car holder too.

SourdoughSally · 18/10/2026 09:50

You need to heat up your mug first, in order to keep things warm. I pour in boiling water and leave it for 5 mins before filling my mug.

Burningbud1981 · 18/10/2026 09:57

Another vote for Contigo!

Nyancat · 18/10/2026 10:06

Recently got an owala travel mug. Doesn't leak. Keeps it hot for ages and has a nice mouth feel to drink out of. Im very funny about how it feels to drink out of. Love my contigo but this is nicer to drink from

VikingNorthUtsire · 18/10/2026 13:38

Thanks everyone. Some good ideas there. I have had a couple of contigos and the weird taste seemed to develop over a few weeks. I am really meticulous about washing them out but eventually they all seem to start tasting of stale tea and slightly off milk.

I'm going to go and research all of these and read all the reviews. I don't mind spending a bit of money if I can find the right one - I'll save the money back within a couple of months if I can take nice-tasting, hot drinks with me when out and about rather than buying!

Are you putting the lids through the dishwasher? That should help get them clean - I do wonder if the problem is that milk is collecting in bits that don’t get cleaned easily.

Maybe try soaking the tops in Milton solution?

mumofpickles · 18/10/2026 13:47

Another vote for Sho found them better than contigo

I have done the Milton thing but no luck :( I also wondered about the lids as they are not always easy to take apart and clean, but I've had the same issue with various different mugs including really basic ones.

I am starting to wonder if DH is right and my taste buds are just super fussy!

Are you cleaning the inside with something abrasive ? That can scratch them and cause staining/debris in the tiny scratches too.

zebrapig · 18/10/2026 14:02

DH came home with Yeti travel mugs from a networking thing last week and I’m quite impressed so far. They’re dishwasher safe and leakproof as far as I can see - I’ve not tried putting them in a bag though.

MCF86 · 18/10/2026 14:07

Please come back with your findings, I have the exact same problem (fussy with tea).
I have a small sttoke cup that is good (not leak proof) and I've been on the look out for a larger version. Leak proof would be even better though as I work in a school.

I found my contigo keeps the drinks molten hot for hours so that by the time it’s not a dangerous temperature it tastes weird, especially tea which tastes overbrewed. I can’t fault it’s heat retaining properties though

OpalHedgehog · 18/10/2026 14:13

The “Bottle Bottle” travel mugs are so good! Keeps it hot for hours and is leakproof

macaroon8 · 18/10/2026 14:20

Bought a contigo, couldn't get on with it at all.

I like the look of the Carter Move cup that a PP linked above. Many of the Amazon reviews mention the taste of the drinks which suggests that it has passed the taste test for people who struggle with Travel Mug Taste (unlike some of the other cups that I have looked at which get great reviews but not a single one which mentions taste)

I've bookmarked it for Black Friday and hoping for a deal

Try Frank Green, one with a push button lid

Yes I did too. Not sure about the thin but short rim for actually drinking from though!

JamesFrond · 18/10/2026 17:54

It’s completely fine to drink from, it hasn’t got a cup like edge but it’s never been a problem.

I’ve also got yeti but as far as I know, only the mug with the handle and the small one have the enamel inside, the rest have metal. And the lids for those. are the ones that are for drinking just as you walk along or in the car or whatever. Not the leakproof one.

I have got the yeti mug for in the house though.

aSpanielintheworks · 18/10/2026 17:57

Sho Calix - I have about four in different colours and I really like the themed ones. I can make it at 9am and still be drinking it at 3pm.
