Does my perfect travel mug exist?

I feel like I have tried so many travel mugs and none of them have ever worked for me 😔 (DH reckons I am just a travel mug princess but indulge me please)

Is there such a thing as a mug that:

  • keeps drinks hot for an hour or two
  • doesn't leak
  • doesn't have a horrible taste? (I don't drink coffee so looking for a mug to contain either tea with milk, or chai latte)

I have had many, many mugs that fulfill 2 of the three. Ceramic ones which tasted decent but didn't keep drinks hot. Leak-proof ones which kept my drinks hot but made them taste awful.

Maybe it doesn't exist but I'm hoping someone can recommend a holy grail mug 🙏

I have a stainless steel circular cup, no issues with taste. You pop the middle out of the top to clean inside the pop up bit, so no issues with cleaning.

Oh yes. I’ve been through so many that have been a disappointment.

I’ve been using Hydroflask and I’m really happy with them. Great product, doesn’t leak, doesn’t taste funny, array of sizes and interchangeable lid options. The sip lid comes apart completely into five different pieces so it can be cleaned thoroughly. Stays piping hot for hours.

I’ve bought from Amazon or direct. They have an outlet section on their website that often has good discounts.

Have a look at Ohelo. No funny taste and dishwasher safe! I have a lovely yellow one with bees on it.

I love my Stanley Aerolight. Doesn’t leak and keeps tea/coffee hot for ages. I had tea in it yesterday and it was lovely. No weird taste. I’m really fussy about tea! It fits perfectly in my car holder too.

I also like the Stanley as you can just chuck it in your bag and definitely no leaks. Keeps very hot/cold too. The only downside is I don’t really like the rim on the cup, you have to really tilt your head back to drink, same with SHO.

I’m a coffee drinker, I love my Contigo cups. Have recently bought a Bottle Bottle, enjoying that too.

I love my Owala smooth sip and am very fussy. Better than Contigo in my view.

cuckoolodger · 18/10/2026 18:42

I agree contigos taste really plasticky and weird, I’ve tried 3 and given all of them to my DH.

Mosaic80 · 18/10/2026 18:46

My favourite travel mug is from
Poundland of all places! Plain metal, screw on plastic lid (i couldn’t chuck it in my bag but it doesn’t leak when drinking which other more expensive ones did so doesn’t leak on me). No weird taste. Cost £4 I think.

hby9628 · 18/10/2026 18:50

Contigo. 100%

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/10/2026 22:27

Contigo, Stanley and ion8 for me.

Stanley is my after-swimming-mug and is reserved for hot squash.
Ion8 is for tea when I’m going out.
Contigo is now for tea when I'm staying in, because it’s got a bit leaky.
They all need preheating to work at their best, that’s just physics.

IMO as another fussy drinker, the reason ceramic cups do not make drinks taste bad but steel ones do, is that the steel ones cannot go through the dishwasher. No matter how you scrub, steel flasks taint. Soup, tea, coffee or cocoa, they all leave a taint.

I have an Ocean Bottle Brew Flask for coffee. If I handwash it, it tastes of stale coffee. But it is dishwasher safe, After dishwashing there is no taint. I can even drink chamomile tea from it. It is also 100% leakproof (as long as you make sure to close it properly 😳) The one drawback is the small volume. I would not have bought such a small cup for such a high price, but I am very glad I received it as a gift, and I would certainly buy more from the range.

Brew Flask

Keeps coffee hot for hours. Vacuum-insulated, leak-proof, made from recycled materials.

I am reluctant to indulge my DH's brand snobbery but I have to begrudgingly accept that the Yeti travel cup he raves on about is actually really good. I normally pick up on the plasticy taste of water bottles, lunch boxes etc but I've never noticed a flavour in the yeti that isn't meant to be there. It doesn't leak at all and the drink is still painfully hot after a couple of hours.

I like the ceramic coating on this one, but how do you drink from it when you are walking and drinking? Do you have to keep the lid off to drink?

StopGo · Yesterday 09:12

SHO are good, stay hot/cold, don’t taint and leak proof. Down side is not dishwasher safe, add a drop or two of Milton to water and soak. I’ve had mine for years so I do pop in the dishwasher and all good.
Yeti are pricey but excellent and dishwasher safe. My favourite since I was gifted one.

I recently bought the Contigo, it's definitely good at keeping drinks, hot and definitely good at being leaked proof, but I don't like drinking from it.

I'm looking for one that's leak proof and keeps drinks. Very hot, but has at top more like a Takeaway coffee top where you can put your mouth around where the liquid comes out of rather than the liquid going into the well.

Or one that you can unscrew the lid and it's nice to drink out of, I don't need to be able to drink out of it while I'm walking.

Yes you do. I just unscrew and take a drink and put it back on. It’s hot as hell. They do do one with a different lid which I haven’t got because this one is so good.

You should get the yeti. It’s got a proper takeaway lid and it’s easy to drink from. It doesn’t leak. It keeps things hot but not as hot as the Carter and doesn’t have a ceramic coating.

Im in the US, but I checked and my favorite one will ship to the UK

It is metal and insulated so stays hot for hours, but is coated on the inside with ceramic so doesnt taint the brew. It has a great lid that screws on and the drinking spout is just the right size so it doesnt rush out too fast. It also has a handy lid handle so if you are trying to juggle bags, keys, a kids hand and a mug, you can hang it off a finger. Oh and it also feels nice to drink out of if you take the lid off completely
