A friend of ours is getting married. They are extreme Christians. No sex, no kisses before wedding. They have a house, but will move in together as a couple.

what to get them??

OP posts:
Foxgloverr · 17/03/2025 10:57

Do they not have a gift list?

dudsville · 17/03/2025 10:58

A cross to go over the bed?

Hoppinggreen · 17/03/2025 10:58

Well nothing sex related for sure but I still feel that gives you a lot of options as I don't remember any of my wedding gifts being relevant to our sex life - apart from the huge black dildo from MIL

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 17/03/2025 10:58

A usual wedding gift. What would you get any other friend getting married? Do that....

PrincessAnne5Eva · 17/03/2025 10:58

Hmm... I'd probably go with a really nice decorative household Bible or book of Psalms. But maybe post this in Christian Mumsnetters where you might get some good responses?

That’s coals to Newcastle, and chances are the ‘decorative’ Bible wouldn’t be their preferred translation. Confused

Just get them something appropriate to a couple setting up home together - it’s oddly unusual nowadays I suppose for this to happen at marriage rather than before.

Well personally I'd always appreciate a beautiful book with content I valued so there you go. No silly wobbly faux confused face needed. Assuming she knows them well enough to be invited to the wedding, I'd expect her to know their denomination and therefore their preferred version of the Bible. But everyone's different. That's why I suggested OP ask on Christian Mumsnetters where there might be some people of the chosen denomination who could respond appropriately.

There's a difference between being Christian and being how the OP described and some very devout Christians (like these ultra conservative presbyterians I know) don't want or value material possessions at all, and most people like to choose their own stuff these days, so you could well offend them with a toaster or whatever, too. 🤷‍♀️

AnnaMagnani · 17/03/2025 11:18

Something normal from their list? Like you would for any other couple.

Edited

I don’t know which exact line of Christianity ✝️ and I don’t want to guess or ask at this stage

I’d just buy them something nice for the house. A decent tea pot was very much my favourite and most used wedding gift. One with a stainless steel tea strainer for loose leaf.

FloppyBunnyOnTheViagra · 17/03/2025 12:07

What about a family Bible op, assuming that they will probably be trying to start a family soon? The kind people keep for generations and then add important information to them? So it has spaces for births and marriages etc in the book itself. You can get lovely personalized ones

This. I mean, it’s pretty straightforward, surely.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/03/2025 12:38

If they don’t have a list, then I’d either ask or else choose the sort of thing that you can’t have too many of. The old joke used to be about getting multiple toasters.

LadeOde · 17/03/2025 12:54

What's the fact they didn't have sex before marriage or didn't kiss got to do with the present you want to get them from their wedding? Christians are normal human beings like the rest of us, what do you normally buy for a couple who just got married? I'd strike out the 'buy them a bible' idea first, surely they've already got more than enough Bibles not to mention free access to several online.

Quite. Plus what's with the "extreme" and "ultra"?
They can't be that narrow if they've invited you, OP.
Just ask them. They may just want a donation to charity.

Jk987 · 17/03/2025 13:07

No sex before marriage is pretty extreme. No kissing before marriage is ultra conservative and extreme!

I hope their kids, if they choose to have them, are not subjected to this. They will live a life of guilt and worry. 🙁

WonkyDonkeyWonkeyDonkey · 17/03/2025 13:10

Teapot is a really good one.

MamaAndTheSofa · 17/03/2025 13:11

Not having sex before being married isn’t a particularly extreme form of Christianity… still fairly common among a lot of couples I know, though maybe not as much of a “given” as it would have been a generation ago.

Just get them a John Lewis voucher and be done with it.

LadeOde · 17/03/2025 13:21

@jk987 Just because Christian standards have fallen doesn't make those who practice its basic principles 'ultra or extreme'.

ApolloandDaphne · 17/03/2025 13:25

Just get them some towels or a toaster or something normal that you would use in your house.

bakermummy21 · 17/03/2025 13:45

Something nice for the garden ?
if they’re into gardening that is

Notquitegrownup2 · 17/03/2025 14:12

I'm a Christian! My favourite wedding present was a great set of kitchen knives with their own stand. Still use them 25 years on.
We already had quite a lot of stuff, so we also asked for donations to a homeless charity, as we set up our own home . . . You could also run your suggestions past the parents of the bride n groom - or best man/chief bridesmaid, if there is no list . . .

CountryQueen · 17/03/2025 16:55

A rose for the garden, or a cherry tree

Why would you give them anything different to any of your other friends?!
Does no sex before marriage (how do you know?) mean they’ll furnish their house differently?
What a weird thread.
