Update - sorry this may have been mentioned somewhere else on MN but Olan Mills went bust last Thursday!

Apparently anyone who is waiting for photos/has sessions booked will obviously have lost their money! I really feel for the staff at our local branch (just before Xmas) - they were v nice and friendly

imnot27 · 17/12/2006 14:11

is terrible about olan mills! Was just planning to book a photo session with them, too....

Spoke to my dh about this thread, he hires freelance photographers all the time (is in pr), for about £150 for a half day. You can choose the location, rather than a studio so you could be in your garden, or in a forest etc, also, although they don't print them out, they give you a cd with all the pics on, and you own copyright!

bobsmum · 17/12/2006 14:24

Venture is extortionate and can't understand how anybody could justify it. Is it a conspicuous consumption thing? Even the frames have a venture logo on them as if the photos themselves didn't already scream "Venture"!

I've used our local Pixifoto a few times now. Not the mobile units that go to Boots/Mothercare, but the fixed digital studio - there aren't too many of them yet.

I guess your photos are only as good as the photographer, not the brand, but I've been really pleased and think they were well worth the money. More like 30 squid a pic, but still with the contemporary white background/bizarre lying around poses and close ups if that's your thing. Or they will still do the hideous feather boa and dress up in flowerpot shots too, but only if you want that.

Think MN have spoken TBH, if you need a price list I suggest you call them yourself.

Are you a business ??

SantasFattymumma · 30/12/2006 22:19

they never publiscise their prices.

i had a set done in 2003. the pictures were lovely and we enjoyed the day but we ended up spending £1400 on one large frame with 9 small prints and one 10x12.

as i say the pictures are lovely but nothing e xceptional. you are much better off going to an independant

TheDevilsAdvocate · 30/12/2006 23:44

William J Walsh, Bespoke Contemporary Portraiture

Yep, I'd say that is a business.

Strange way to find out details about your competitors.

CaptainFlameSparrow · 30/12/2006 23:48

How odd... would make more sense to "win" yourself a free session with them

CaptainFlameSparrow · 30/12/2006 23:52

I guess though Mr Walsh you now know - do the same stuff, charge less, advertise with MN and you're away!

Skribble · 30/12/2006 23:52

Bit cheecky way to do market research wasn't it.

Skribble · 30/12/2006 23:53

Pay the fee for advertising.

CaptainFlameSparrow · 30/12/2006 23:58

Oh yes, I meant pay for the advertising.

Crystaltips · 31/12/2006 00:04

oooh rather put off by W J Walsh .... but rather thrilled at the other posts - as I am thinking of embarking into photography - on a semi-professional basis ....

At the prices that Venture are charging .... I might be OK at a fraction of that ..

Better bookmark this thread ( Heh Heh )

Skribble · 31/12/2006 00:12

Go for it cyrstaltips, my BIL gave us some pics of our kids for Christmas. They were staying with them for the night and his girlfriends freind took some pics she is a photography student. Kids didn't let on so it was a total surprise. Great relaxed pics.

wjwalsh · 09/01/2007 15:52

sorry, i dident mean to upset anybody.
I have tried to call venture but they will not give me a price list over the phone or by email or by post.
Please dont think that i was trying to advertise on MN
i did a search on venture Prices in google and this site came up.
Again i am really sorry{blush}
