Does everyone think you’ll need eight 9s to get into Tiffin Boys 6th form this year?

Loads leaving our local independent schools to try for Tiffin 6th form this year (post VAT) so am worrying the odds are smaller than ever!

Exactly. Given how rare all 9s are in the whole of the UK, I doubt the school can demand eight 9s.

The stat regarding all 9’s doesn’t include dc at private schools who sit the Cambridge international exam board for English language, lit and in some cases French and history. There are more than 1300 dc who achieved all 9’s in 2024 if you include Cambridge international too.

Anyone got offers yet?

Muchtoomuchtodo · 20/08/2026 18:00

Do they only consider the best 9 results?

Whatsnextforus · 20/08/2026 20:30

Best 8 results (from
the list of approved GCSEs). No offer yet here

8’s not many. What about those who have more than 8 top grades? Does that help their application?

No. Do read the admissions policy.

I’ve not got any skin in the game. Just interested to see what kind of achievements these kids need to attend such popular schools. We had no choice at all of school or sixth form as we wanted Welsh medium education for our dc.

8 GCSEs doesn’t seem many. The top sets at our school take 12.

gsha · 21/08/2026 08:33

The kids don't only have 8 GCSEs. I think what people are saying is Tiffin only take into account the best 8 of certain subjects.

A downside to this new offer system Tiffin is running from the student's point of view is that students spend all day waiting, I really hope that hasn't detracted from the pride and happiness they should feel in themselves on results day. If you're still waiting also remember that not all that have applied will be pursuing their application as may have in the meantime taken places at other high ranking schools they applied to such as Tiffin girls, Kings maths school and the Sutton grammars.

Also remember Tiffin is only a school and that there are plenty of good schools in the same/ surrounding area.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 21/08/2026 08:36

I see, thanks for explaining @gsha

I hope everyone gets sixth form places that they are happy with and enjoys the upcoming University open days. It’s a very exciting time for your dc.

just checking if anyone got any offers yet?

Roseredvelvet · 21/08/2026 12:12

Just received another email saying we will hear today! Must be on reserve list due to distance or something.

TheCoolTiger · 21/08/2026 12:18

We won’t be taking up the offer if we get it but we got the same holding email and live very close! I would be pulling my hair out if we were still hanging on for an offer.

TheCoolTiger · 21/08/2026 12:22

I wonder how they choose between local candidates who all have 9s?

pankajbh · 21/08/2026 12:26

In case if tie.. its distance..

Roseredvelvet · 21/08/2026 13:11

Rejected, must be oversubscribed. Hope others have better luck x

pankajbh · 21/08/2026 13:14

We also got Rejected.. 7 9s and 1 8s and in catchment.

dottondool · 21/08/2026 13:17

How many dc actually leave in the 6th form. Historically I knew a few who would go private but I don’t think that’s necessary nowadays

dottondool · 21/08/2026 13:19

And do they have a preference when taking external dc from particular schools?

The catchment is also pretty large so there may be plenty of dc locally who score high as there are some great local schools.

Roseredvelvet · 21/08/2026 13:21

Ds had 9 x 9 & 1 x 8, so who knows how they work it out!

No. Do read the admissions policy. Schools do have to stick to the letter of them!
