Tiffin Girls Autumn 2024 Exams

My daughter recently sat the Stage One exams for Tiffin Girls 2025 entry in Y7. I guess we won’t know until 15 October if she’s through to the next stage but I’m hearing quite a difference in experiences as between the Tiffin Girls and Boys’ exams so far and wondered if anyone had any insight into that? The boys have (purely anecdotally) had easier papers. My daughter felt she did pretty well but had no time at all to check her Maths answers at the end and didn’t fill in two questions. No idea how bad that is?!

In a way it doesn’t matter if the exam was harder/easier as they are not competing against each other. If TGS exam is harder all the candidates will have found it harder but top results will get through to next round. In terms of not finishing - I think very few do and it’s expected that most won’t finish. Lot of girls get through to next round who didn’t finish.

ncsurrey22 · 09/10/2024 07:57

last year I am pretty sure the papers were identical (several boys from DD's class sat on the same day and compared notes after). The main difference is that the pass mark will likely be different as Tiffin Boys competes with Wilsons whereas TGS has no other grammar to share candidates with. I doubt the paper itself was easier. It is just the pass mark that will likely be different.

SamPoodle123 · 09/10/2024 09:00

How do you know the boys had easier papers? Were the boys/girls able to compare questions asked etc? My ds did the Tiffin boy exam and did say it was not as hard as he thought it would be. But he seems to have amnesia and won't give a straight answer of what was on the exam. So frustrating.

safetyzone · 09/10/2024 11:28

I'm not sure this is relevant - they will pick the top xx% of students to sit at stage 2, so if it's a difficult paper, it will apply to everyone that sits in that exam but no one else.

Sunnyside12 · 09/10/2024 11:50

I think the girls/boys papers were different - e.g it sounds like the girls English paper had far more questions. But then my son got through the English with plenty of time spare (having checked his answers), so I’m hoping he didn’t just miss a few pages! He didn’t quite get through all the maths, and there were other boys we heard had finished 15 minutes early on that. So who knows, will wait for the email on Tuesday.

Oh ! I can so relate with you. Why can't they tell it properly? Got the same response.

SamPoodle123 · 09/10/2024 12:12

@Sunnyside12 yes, it seems the English paper was def shorter, as my son said the same. I was worried he missed a paper! And same w math, did not finish all.

SamPoodle123 · 09/10/2024 12:14

@Mommyingboys yes, exactly lol. I wanted to know what was on the exam! He just said it was different from what we prepped, but then could not really give any proper info on it.

keepcalm2024 · 09/10/2024 12:16

Hi anyone knows how many girls had the stage one exams in TGS? and what proportion will go through for the second stage? Thanks.

TheGoldenGate · 09/10/2024 12:30

@ncsurrey22

TGS has no other grammar to share candidates with.
Of course it does:
NonSuch, Wallington. There are plenty of girls candidate who live in Kingston, Sutton and so on areas who apply for all three

Tiffin Boys competes with Wilsons
And Sutton Grammar

ncsurrey22 · 09/10/2024 12:40

@TheGoldenGate Wilsons is higher ranked than Tiffin Boys.
Tiffin Girls is higher ranked than Nonsuch/Wallington. Hence different acceptance ratios.

Bingo !

TheGoldenGate · 09/10/2024 13:17

But the same cohort is applying and taking exams to all those schools because of location.

actually Tiffin boys is way below Wilsons when it comes to the popularity of schools. Wilson ranks as no 1 in UK

The first stage is easier, a big number of multiple-choice questions, that was my sons experience. Stage 2 is the real discriminator, I believe this applies for both the girls and the boys. My son got a place on the 1st of March. Good luck to your son, I remember the wait for the results felt so long!

Also yes, I seem to remember the girls' and boys' stage 1 being the same but not stage 2, as they were on different days..

Kaff83 · 13/10/2024 17:50

@sunnyside12 @sampoodle123 We had the same - son finished English in half the time and didn't finish maths. I'm sure it's a different paper to the girls who said they had around 90 questions; my son said he had 42. I was worried he'd missed a second side but he said "Mummy on the front it said 'There are 42 questions in this paper' and after question 42 it said 'end of test'" so I think he probably didn't miss any 😂. Still, it's a relief that others said the same!

Sunnyside12 · 13/10/2024 17:55

Thanks @Kaff83 - that’s exactly what my son said about the questions for English, phew! No idea why the girls had so many; a different format I guess. Fingers crossed missing a few in the maths won’t make it an automatic “no”.

TheGoldenGate · 14/10/2024 09:31

Tiffin Girls is sharing only a name with Tiffin School- historical thing. It is completely different school and they have different admission criteria

Mommyingboys · 15/10/2024 10:47

Tiffin boys results are in.

Sunnyside12 · 15/10/2024 11:18

My DS got through!! For future readers - on the Maths exam he said there were 44 questions and didn’t get time to do the last 4. Fingers crossed for everyone else waiting.

mimisilly · 15/10/2024 11:21

any girl's news?

SamPoodle123 · 15/10/2024 13:25

Apparently, the girl emails have started going out too....since a couple hours ago.

11plus2nd · 15/10/2024 13:49

Yeah, we got in 2nd round. Does the first round count toward the end results. My daughter had the last math question unanswered( out of time). The English test was good.

Proudmumofonly1 · 15/10/2024 14:02

We got the email as well from Tiffin girls!! Good luck to everyone.

@11plus2nd in the email it says that the English mark will be based on the stage two test, and the Maths mark will be based on the stage two test and the stage one test in a ratio of 3:1.
Hope this helps 😊

That is great news! Now we know they did not miss any English pages 😂
