All Private School Parents Should Get State School Places to Fight Back VAT

OP posts:

Don't be ridiculous

atotalshambles · 29/07/2024 17:20

Enough already !

BabooForYou · 29/07/2024 17:20

Not this again

atotalshambles · 29/07/2024 17:20

No more VAT education threads

LiterallyOnFire · 29/07/2024 17:21

That'll make you all as popular as Just Stop Oil.

Just lobby on the normal, civilised way and stop the tantrum nonsense.

Greytulips · 29/07/2024 17:21

I’m not sure that would work for GCSE years or Alevels.

Some parents have too much money to care about the VAT and will have an accountant write it off.

It will only affects those on the cusp of affording it.

HurdyGurdy19 · 29/07/2024 17:21

No.

One

Cares.

ArabellaFishwife · 29/07/2024 17:21

You know you can't just walk in and take your place in a classroom, right?

LarkspurLane · 29/07/2024 17:21

Agreed.
That would be the end of private schools (and more importantly the end of threads about private schools).

UKposter · 29/07/2024 17:22

Why should private schools be VAT free OP?
i understand that it seems unfair that prices go up and less people will be able to afford. That’s an unfortunate transition period but what’s the long term argument?

NotAlexa · 29/07/2024 17:22

They will get state school places - they pay tax! It's the question of whether they'll still want to send their kids to a state school or face VAT rises.

To be fair, the Chancellor did just announce it is being implemented. And from January, which is earlier than anticipated. So it's confirmed, but hardly a tragedy. Worse cuts are coming for people who can ill afford them.

northernerinthesouth2000 · 29/07/2024 17:23

Here we go again!! 😴

Some people clearly don’t understand how the state system works…

All Private School Parents Should Get State School Places to Fight Back VAT

I hope you didn't go to private school. If you did, your parents should get their money back because they didn't even teach you how to use capital letters.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 29/07/2024 17:25

...and then what?

RoseAndRose · 29/07/2024 17:27

Well, if they all do, that ends the provision off private schools because all collapse because there are no pupils.

And why do you think the Labour government would think that a bad thing?

That would be a major ideological win for the Left at much lower cost than having to nationalise schools

Inthemosquitogarden · 29/07/2024 17:27

@Greytulips would be delighted to hear how an accountant could possibly write off VAT paid for school fees. It would have to be a wholly related business expense and considering that for years people have tried and failed to get child care / Nannies counted as a legitimate business expense, I don’t think HMRC are suddenly going to let school fees be reclaimed. But if there’s an angle that hasn’t been considered I’m sure lots of people would be keen to hear it!

especially since many of the parents at dc school are using the private school solely so they can work - the long school hours, wrap around care and 10 hour day holiday clubs as make it a childcare option cheaper than a nanny (especially for the many hospital consultants).

pasta · 29/07/2024 17:29

So you want an end to private schools?

Or are you a bit hard of thinking........

Smigglewriggle · 29/07/2024 17:30

Any private school pupils who want a state school place will be given one, not really sure what your point is?

Countrylife2002 · 29/07/2024 17:31

Yawn

Sethera · 29/07/2024 17:34

Hmm, yes, I can just imagine Kate and Will putting George's name down for the local comp 😄

TerfTalking · 29/07/2024 17:36

Did you bother to search for all the other threads on this topic OP before you started another?

No? Perhaps you should have.

OlympicsFanGirl · 29/07/2024 17:37

The state sector is well practiced at taking in refugees. Most recently 20,000 Ukrainians.

It will cope with private school kids.

Look forward to seeing you at the PTA.

Icanwalkintheroom · 29/07/2024 17:39

Great! See you at the school gate Sept 2nd!

Shinyandnew1 · 29/07/2024 17:39

Another thread on private schools-yay 😂.

If you don’t want to pay the VAT, put your child’s name down for a state school if you want one. It’s up to you. It might not be the state school you want though.
