All Private School Parents Should Get State School Places to Fight Back VAT

OP posts:

Nothing to stop you moving your dcs to state school. Just do it, why the song and dance?

RosePetalsRose · 29/07/2024 17:41

All private schools should be banned. Money should be invested into the state schools instead and give everyone an even chance.

cestlavielife · 29/07/2024 17:43

Absolutely. All these parents will raise tons for the ptas.
Govt will allocate more funds to the schools.
Stop closing London schools which are losing kids as they going private
Win win

Really? You think having money to burn means kids will get an even chance? They will have so many extra lessons in languages, sports, science, trips abroad, etc

Some kids never go further than Tescos.

And you can’t tell me kids don’t kniw who’s rich and who isn’t?! They know!

There’s no such thing as equal.

paperrockscissors · 29/07/2024 18:00

This is getting boring now. Let’s face it, you probably voted for Labour along with most of Mumsnet. You’ve made your bed so now you must lie in it.

TraceyDeacy · 29/07/2024 18:02

Exactly @cestlavielife . I don’t see private school parents weeping when state schools have closed in recent years.

But don’t hold your breath for PTA fundraisers - you’ve seen that these guys don’t part with their money easily.

And that’s before you get to the misery they create for the teachers who have to deal with them currently in their private schools. You’ve seen what they’ve done to Mumsnet (state school teachers really could do without receiving this sort of entitled communication in their inboxes).

London school closure is due to falling birth rates, Brexit, and the Covid exodus which drove a large number of young families in the commuter towns and caused a massive hike in prices there. In the North London area there very few sought-after secondaries and the property prices around those secondaries are already coming close to £1.5 for a terraced house in a need of modernisation. The house prices near schools with a bad reputation did not go up massively and middle-class families from whom you expect "tons of funds for PTAs" wont send their kids there, they'd just overpay for a house in "a good secondary catchment", move outside London or move abroad.

NowItsMeMyselfAndI · 29/07/2024 18:07

Are you also going to start a thread encouraging all the private school teachers to quit and move to the state sector? Because by your logic they are all going to need new jobs pronto. No? Then presumably you don’t really envisage kids quitting the private sector en masse.

just live with the fact that sometimes things change. Half the nation has had to put up with an unwanted Brexit. Shitty things happen.

I.....don't care.

The people that start these threads are not private school parents 😂😂😂

FayKM · 29/07/2024 18:30

And your point is….

Of course they will get state school places!

A bonus local to me where there has been 16 closed since 2018 due to low pupil numbers.

Thisisadilemma567 · 29/07/2024 18:32

I think private school parents should apply for a state school place. If that's want and is what's right for their children. Doing it out of spite or to make a political point seems stupid.

Sorry, but I have no issue with this change to the tax system. It's been well trailed and parents have been given time to make other arrangements if they want to.

Besides, parents that do make the decision to send their kids to a state school now have about £16k in extra disposable income that they didn't have before. Why would anyone complain about that? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Persiancouscous · 29/07/2024 18:33

Enjoy being on the waiting list for a poxy 20% increase. You know you will have to send your little darlings to the school to actually take up a place

SonicTheHodgeheg · 29/07/2024 18:33

Why would the parents who can absorb the cost give a shit ?

They really can't be because if 20% sends you this crazy, you really can't afford to send them

Private schools don't require teachers to have done teacher training, so they aren't going to be moving to state schools.

@Greytulips of course children know which kids are rich. And? There has always been rich kids and poor kids at school. Unfortunately private schools make this gap even bigger.
The rich kids need to
mix with poorer families. That way people understand each other and mix together.

The way children and parents look down at state schools and children who attend them is awful.

Begsthequestion · 29/07/2024 18:43

Well, yeah. Then we can close down private schools.

Good idea OP! I'll contact my MP.

Notellinganyone · 29/07/2024 18:43

No they shouldn’t. I teach in an independent school and all 3DCs went. This is immoral and incendiary. I have no issues with the VAT policy.

houseonthehill · 29/07/2024 18:49

Y’know, the Private Schools could opt to absorb the VAT into their current fees. That’s what we did when we had to register our business for VAT, so that customers weren’t suddenly faced with a 20% price hike. They weren’t businesses or individuals who were themselves VAT registered, so it would just have been a 20% price rise, so we took the hit ourselves initially.

Over the next 2 years, we increased prices by 5% each year, to share the impact.

You might want to ask the schools why, apart from greed, they don’t consider something similar.

BarqsHasBite · 29/07/2024 18:56

OP is either a bot or a journo in need of a silly season story too lazy to look up the multiple threads on this already, or a plain old fashioned troll.

Don’t take the bait peeps.

Have you thought about taking in ironing?

Or giving up Netlix, Starbucks and avocado toast? I've heard it can help you buy an actual house so should be good for increased private school fees.

PuttingDownRoots · 29/07/2024 18:58

People might have had more sympathy if there wasn't so.much moaning and whining and faux social media campaigns.
