Anyone heard from Tiffin Boys Sixth Form - interviews?

Vive42 · 17/02/2024 16:26

DD is keen to go to Tiffin Boys for sixth form.

We found on another forum website that by now, last year, a lot of people were having interviews and had heard from the school.

So far we've received no further communications from Tiffin Boys about DD's application.

Posting here to see if anyone is having interviews and if we should expect a rejection. 😞

Hi, we were asked as well and similarly my DDs teacher said she had already submitted the results....

Luffers1972 · 11/03/2024 11:20

Habe any interviews taken place yet?

Richmond001 · 11/03/2024 11:45

Hi, I am also interested - we havent heard a thing after being asked to submit our mock results. Anybody else? I am starting to think it is a no as surely we would have heard by now?

Vive42 · 11/03/2024 13:33

We’ve still heard nothing…but then DD’s average probably not high enough.

I previously applied for my other daughter probably rather ambitiously?! She achieved a handful of 5,s a couple of 6,s a 7 and 2 8’s in her early mocks - Nov. Her application was not successful, no interview. In her GCSE’s she achieved all 7’s and above (couple of 9’s, a few 8’s and the rest 7’s. I’ve just checked I received notification of her unsuccessful application at the end of March. Hope this helps.

Richmond001 · 11/03/2024 13:53

Thanks @Luffers1972 My DD has slightly better results than her friend who got invited for an interview. Different subjects. Her friend applied for german, history and something else. So, I must assume it is down to subject choices as others have mentioned. My DD applied for maths, art & philosphy.

Luffers1972 · 11/03/2024 13:59

Yes agree they must be looking at subject choices.

anoukis · 11/03/2024 15:56

We were also asked about the latest mock results - in support of the predicted grades - and we sent in the Nov mock results. However the admissions lady has said that we can also send the results of the Feb mocks "when they become available" (which in our case should be next week). She has not provided a deadline...

anoukis · 11/03/2024 16:06

PS. DD is applying for a very popular combo - Maths-Biology-Chemistry-Further Maths. I suspect the competition will be the highest there, so I'm not holding my breath...

DblEspresso · 11/03/2024 17:52

No-one in my child's school has heard anything back yet. Last year the process was pretty much finished by now. So either they are delayed or not many here got in.

Can I ask what the results of your DD's friend were? Certainly arts subjects seems to have a better chance at getting a space.

Hi @Vive42 as far as I know she had two 9s, rest 8s and a couple of 7s

Rasb1234 · 15/03/2024 11:38

I spoke to Tiffin this week who advised they are still interviewing and inviting to interview …..

Richmond001 · 15/03/2024 15:02

Thank you @Rasb1234

Does anyone know if the interview and school tour is in small groups or 121?

Tour is usually in a group and meeting is 1 to 1 but with parent present. (It's a meeting not an interview).

DblEspresso · 21/03/2024 00:10

For those whose DC received an interview invite, did you get an email in your account or your child's?

This was mentioned up-thread. From past experience it goes to the child, and is from the admissions officer (initials ZM).

@Vive42"so does that mean those that are offered a place only need 8 x 7?!! Which is 56?"

Yes (plus minimum for each course). This is the threshold for their internal students to transfer, and they're not allowed to have different academic entry criteria for externals. They use the predicted grades to manage oversubscription the external offers. However, once a conditional offer is in the bag, it's relatively plain sailing.

"DD got an 8 in her mocks for history but is still predicted a 7 by her teacher. Would Tiffin take that into account? Should I email them with that information?"

If you have a formal report, with her mock grades, then send it as evidence. If you read their admissions policy carefully it says the offers are based on "our assessment of" the predicted grades, which provides scope for them to consider contextual info.

"She loves English literature"

Has she looked at the A Level syllabus for Eng Lit? Worth doing, in case it's not to her taste.

Edited

That’s not the case at a couple of the selective sixth forms in SE London (applying as an external candidate). You can get a conditional offer, but that is not a guarantee of a place on results day, there is often a fraught wait of a day or two, due to oversubscription - where I think they confirm the offer to those achieving highest, then work down the list if places are not taken up. They clearly state on the website that a conditional offer is not a guaranteed place, however we did not quite understand what that meant until we had the fraught couple of days, a few years ago!

Yes, well those other schools are probably aligned with the admissions code. Tiffin isn't.

"Yes, well those other schools are probably aligned with the admissions code. Tiffin isn't."

There's info about it in this thread:

Luffers1972 · 21/03/2024 11:44

Has anyone in the past few days followed up with admissions? We are still waiting to hear. My daughter achieved all 8’s in early mocks (Nov) and her only mocks. Emailed but heard nothing back.

Richmond001 · 21/03/2024 17:53

My DDs friend who got invited to an interview a while back already but hasn't actually attended it yet received an email giving her a conditional offer in which they said she had to achieve a certain grade in one of her subjects to get in. We haven't had any comms though :(

dredded · 21/03/2024 18:34

Tiffin does have a new Head this year, so perhaps some of their processes are in flux. In the past it was always the Headteacher and the Head of Sixth Form and other senior leaders that did the interviews.

Vive42 · 22/03/2024 10:05

Yes we heard new COO at Tiffin Boys as well.

Quite a few changes at the top then?

Out with the old in with the new? Any more info dredded?
