@QuiteAJourney , complete agree, in many cases they are used as marketing tools to attract more academic candidates to accept. Most are worth around 10%, somewhere like surbiton high use to offer a lot more to attract possible Tiffin candidates. It's best to not consider them and if they come along it's a nice financial gift.

I agree - Best not to think about them.. and, if they come, throw them into the "decision mix".
In addition to the financial element, some people get drawn by them because of the "prestige" element (eg applications beyond secondary) and, as mentioned above, if there is a scholar programme attached.

@BlueTick completely agree with you on the disproportionately large called back to interview at some schools is just unnecessary. I understand the need to over offer but some have been ridiculous. My DD has her hopes up but I’ve had to put manage her expectations given the numbers being called back. It would be better to put us out of our misery earlier!

We are in SW London and applied for Tiffin Girls. There are two stages and once the 2nd stage is completed you’re totally in the dark until offer day. So no idea if getting through to stage 2 was a fluke or not!

Sounds helpful that in N.London you have an idea at least where you stand.

I agree is helpful in the sense that a lot of high level tutored + good ability kids in North London are not competing with my DD at private school applications stage anymore since the parents are mainly focus on grammar with years of efforts.

From my experience these are the most competitive students (and parents) among all 11+ applicants.

@secondaryquandries "10 min a day in the months leading up to London grammar exams"

This is a reoccurring joke in MN - not matter how naturally talented their DCs are

MomFromSE · 20/01/2023 20:07

@SamPoodle123 it varies a lot. Alleyns are work about 25 percent off the fees for the top academic scholars as well as less valuable ones

QuiteAJourney · 20/01/2023 20:32

Good luck to those at Emanuel tomorrow.

@Lolakath19

I only know from one other parent at my DC’s prep that they received the email (plus you did too) - so sample of 3 for sure :-)

Having said that, I have not asked around so have assumed everyone who got through to stage 2 of LU received the email because I can’t believe they would send it out selectively at this stage of the process (surely that wouldn’t be allowed for GDPR or whatever?).

It was ill-judged IMHO, especially as the email references enjoying meeting my DC but with no caveats about tough decisions having to be made over the next weeks etc. Just a hard sell on how great the school is!!

I deleted the email without reading more than the intro. I too thought it was a very odd thing to send out at this stage of the process. So cruel as the odds of getting an offer at this stage are only 1:3 or something like that.

Daydreamscometrue · 20/01/2023 21:59

@QuiteAJourney thanks! We're at Emanuel first thing

QuiteAJourney · 20/01/2023 22:15

@Daydreamscometrue Good luck! I think we are having quite similar journeys 😊

Hello. I am just curious with past experience and outcomes, if your dc had multiple interviews, did you get at least one or two offers? I know there are no guarantees...but trying to be hopeful...

This is a section C SPGS maths question:

Assuming have 4 interviews, each interview has 50% chance converts to an offer. Zero correlation on performance between interviews.. The probability of getting at least 1 offer is 93.75%

Thanks :) My dd has 4 interviews (well, she has done 3 and now just Emanuel left). Funny that it is a SPGS math question lol. I am hoping the interviews have a 50%, but I suspect Emanuel less so since they invite so many kids back! I think it was 600 kids out of 900 get invited back!

Daydreamscometrue · 20/01/2023 22:30

@QuiteAJourney thank you and yes! 😁

PreplexJ · 20/01/2023 22:32

And good luck for all the DD doing SPGS interview tmr 😛

momomamiko · 20/01/2023 22:34

@PreplexJ 😅😅

QuiteAJourney · 20/01/2023 22:42

Of course, good luck to the one's doing SPGS - sorry, I was not aware...

@PreplexJ brilliant!!

Yes, good one! (I'm not sure that I would be getting into St Paul's).

Good luck to those with interviews tomorrow!!!

Good luck everyone on the Emanuel and St Pauls interviews, let us know how they went!

LondonMum20222 · 21/01/2023 08:41

Seconding those good luck vibes for DCs having Emanuel & SPGS interviews today - hope they all go really well!

Daydreamscometrue · 21/01/2023 11:12

Good luck at SPGS all those doing it. we're just back from Emanuel. DS loved the group activity and interview. He really enjoyed chatting to the interviewer.

QuiteAJourney · 21/01/2023 11:43

@Daydreamscometrue great! It is really good when the DC have a good experience. I have to say that Emanuel, despite the large number of applicants, seems to have managed a well organised and child-minded process.... other schools can definitely learn from them.
Are you now done with the 11+ fun and games?
