South West London boys private and grammar 10+/11+

I can see a thread for girls but not for boys. My son is current year 5, moving into year 7 2023 class.

We just sat the Hampton 10+ test on Saturday and waiting for the results now. Fully expecting not to get a place, as v competitive and I don't think we did enough prep with our son, but still fingers crossed for a miracle!

Any other parents going through the sw London entrance exams with their boys out there?...

Anyone?

Yes, we are! My boy also sat 10+ at Hampton on Saturday but I know it’s very competitive although no idea how many boys did it. He’s got his hopes up however I’m not as sure….I wonder when we will hear.

11+ Emanuel here! Interview in a couple of weeks time. All very exciting ... Confused

examnerves · 08/11/2021 14:28

👋 I hope the interview goes well morasmum. How many are interviewed vs spaces? Have you applied elsewhere?

Hi pencilsready. How did he find the exam? My son enjoyed the English and 'finished' the maths but skipped a few and didn't have time to go back, so I think at least 3 or 4 out of 22 ish were not answered. I am not expecting a call back to interview but it will be good to get feedback. He is at a state currently, so no real sense of how possible it would be for him to get into Hampton.

What other schools are you looking at?

OP posts:
Pencilsready · 08/11/2021 14:57

We were just doing it for a practice for next year and I do think it’s unlikely he will get n interview. My son missed out about 2 or 3 of maths too. He’s also coming from a state school. Not sure which other schools we’ll try for as haven’t seen some but maybe KGS, Radnor & Halliford. What about you?

Pencilsready · 08/11/2021 15:07

But it would be amazing if he did get to the interview stage! I’ve heard they interview about 70-80 for 35-40 places. Fingers crossed.

examnerves · 08/11/2021 15:19

Agreed. We're down for the kgs 10 plus too but haven't got much further. Might put down for kings Wimbledon 11+. Maybe the grammars too. What we need to think about is the back up schools, as these are all super selective. Halliford is a bit further for us. Have you visited Halliford/Radnor? What is your tip pick at the mo?

I'm surprised they interview so many! I wonder when we'll here.

Any news yet pencilsready?

Not heard here. You?

examnerves · 10/11/2021 16:18

Nope. I expect to hear this week sometime as the interview is next week.

@morasmum, we’ve been practicing for the interview and my DD gives the most honest and hilarious answers.

I don’t know how the interviewers manage to do it with a straight face, they must hear all sorts of funny comments.

I love how sweet and innocent they still are.

morasmum · 10/11/2021 17:56

@1309username

I am happy to hear mine is not the only one. I would expect that is what they want to see: how they think and if they can catch the spark in their eyes.

However, he described at length why and how much he dislikes English, specially spelling... so i need to help him frame that one better.

@morasmum, I always tell her there’s no wrong answer as long as she can explain why she thinks/feels that way.

I have promised her I will be away from the living room while the interview takes place, I don’t want her to feel self conscious I’m listening.

morasmum · 11/11/2021 14:12

@1309username
Wish you all the best to no get caught eavesdropping! 😂

TangerineSky · 11/11/2021 18:45

Hi all, I just found this thread, wish I’d found it sooner. Our DS took the Hampton 10+ on Saturday and we had an email this afternoon to say he’s been invited to interview. Needless to say thrilled as had no idea what to expect. Have you heard anything? I think there were 200+ boys sitting for about 40 places

examnerves · 11/11/2021 20:38

Hi Tangerine. Well done to your son! That's great news. We heard today and weren't invited to interview, which wasn't really surprise though it would have been great obviously!

Is Hampton your first choice school? Where is her currently?

OP posts:
TangerineSky · 11/11/2021 20:55

Thank you, that’s really kind. You’ll get another shot next year though, and hopefully the feedback will be a big help. We still have the interview hurdle ahead so not counting any chickens, but it is 100% first choice school (and the only 10+ he did) and if we don’t get through next round we’ll come back for 11+. He’s currently at a primary not far away, we don’t know anyone else who applied so difficult to gauge how it went. Are you doing any other 10+ exams this year or focus on the 11+ now?

examnerves · 11/11/2021 21:17

I'd say it must have gone pretty well! Good luck for the interview. Would be a weight off to get in this year!

We have applied to sit the KGS 10 plus too. Perhaps should do a bit more prep this time! Though Hampton is my son's favourite, not that he's actually seen any others yet so that could change!

OP posts:
TangerineSky · 11/11/2021 21:21

Both great experience, so hard to tell what they’re looking for and last week’s test was one that it would have been hard to prep for I think. These things all have a habit of coming good in the end, the more information you can give yourselves the better, good luck with KGS 🤞

examnerves · 11/11/2021 21:32

Yes great experience for sure. How long is the interview? Did they give you any feedback?

OP posts:
TangerineSky · 12/11/2021 06:58

No, no feedback at all. We’ll have to wait until March for that as well. Interview is around 20 minutes, seems to be focused on getting to know the children so will encourage him to go in and be himself. A step closer but still a long way to go!

examnerves · 12/11/2021 09:13

I think you have a very good chance with an interview. I don't expect they interview too many in excess of places but I don't know.

OP posts:
Pencilsready · 12/11/2021 14:07

Sorry @examnerves it was a no for now. My son has been offered an interview so very pleased for him but nervous too!
