GCSE Summer 2020 Thread 7 : Carry on Corona Cohort, Cruising or Crawling to The Final Countdown

Welcome all to the 7th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort ...or the Corona Cohort as has been termed by @FoolsAssassin.

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in 2010, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay in secondary so any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find.

From now on our DS/DD may go down various paths so we decided not to be exclusionary and stay right here in Secondary Grin

Thread 1 The first GCSE yr 10

Thread 6 last thread

Great deflection onto OFQAL from Chair of Education Select committee 😡

Piggywaspushed · 16/08/2020 08:15

There must be a senior Tory with a child in year 13 or 11, surely?

Nearest I can get is Gav with a year 10.

FoolsAssassin · 16/08/2020 08:25

Will be interested to see the Marr show this morning.

@DayB1Day

See how unfair mocks are.

My dc did mocks in Oct. March would have had very diff results.Angry

It was a completely stupid idea. I hope to god they are not keeping it.

CAG is the only way forward now.

lilgreen · 16/08/2020 08:35

Teacher on BBc now. Teachers already moderated mocks! Don’t need modifying twice!

Yellowbutterfly1 · 16/08/2020 08:41

My dd did mocks in November and March, the November ones weren’t bad but not the best but after changing her exam technique her March ones were a lot better.

I certainly will never vote for this government even though I come from a Tory voting family, have they not grasped that all of these children and their parents are very unlikely to vote for them again. It’s a lot of votes to lose.

Northumberlandlass · 16/08/2020 08:41

Teacher on BBC made valid point on English & Maths - noting if students don’t get a 4 they are obliged to retake. He rightly said this would be a logistical nightmare.

FoolsAssassin · 16/08/2020 08:44

Yes isn’t 6th form funding contingent on them either having or resitting English and maths?

Yellowbutterfly1 · 16/08/2020 08:45

I was just thinking the same Northumberlandlass

Bobbybobbins · 16/08/2020 08:45

Totally agree with the points about mocks. I'm a secondary teacher. We luckily had final mocks literally the weeks before lockdown for year 11 but year 13 missed theirs due at the end of March.

It meant when doing CAGs we had so much more evidence of improvement etc.

Yes and as English and Maths are taken by everyone the low cohort number thing is not going to help anywhere and the rankings must have been the hardest of the lot with the most difficult decisions for teachers.

You have to keep resitting English and maths till either you get 4s or you turn 19. This disproportionately impacts students with SENs.

EasilyDelighted · 16/08/2020 08:48

And that's another thing, poor schools trying to get ready for a socially distanced covid secure return and now this.

lilgreen · 16/08/2020 08:48

@Bobbybobbins this is my DD. Maths is her weakest subject. A 4 in November prompted us to get a tutor and in March she got a comfortable 5. Teacher said capable of a 6 as class work was 6/7. However she was in a set where most were doing foundation and she and 3 others were doing the higher paper. This would rank her towards the bottom of the 5s I guess so she could be issued a D/E/U!!!!

FoolsAssassin · 16/08/2020 08:50

I feel incredibly sorry for the teachers. Yes there have been the odd few who overinflated but I feel the vast majority have tried really hard in very difficult circumstances. Must have been awful seeing so many at tears last when they put in hours of work only to find most of their work disregarded.

Northumberlandlass · 16/08/2020 08:51

Yes @FoolsAssassin - well I’m sure it is at DS 6th form.

I’m so glad DH and I both have the day off this Thursday. I need the moral support.

lilgreen · 16/08/2020 08:53

Not D/E, that’s old money obviously I mean a 3 or 2 Confused

Same here and I just cracked on with DD’s.
OrangeCinnamon1 · 16/08/2020 08:56

DD and DH must think I'm suddenly addicted to my phone...in between twittering , this thread and a facebook gcse results group I agreed to moderate. I'm trying to not let on to Dd that i'm incensed about this shit show as I don't want to worry her. She'll be ok, it's just a massive bubble of injustice that sticks in my craw. As you were ...I'm going to get caffeine. A new thread is coming !
