GCSE Summer 2020 Thread 7 : Carry on Corona Cohort, Cruising or Crawling to The Final Countdown

OrangeCinnamon1 · 11/08/2020 17:50

Welcome all to the 7th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort ...or the Corona Cohort as has been termed by @FoolsAssassin.

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in 2010, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay in secondary so any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find.

From now on our DS/DD may go down various paths so we decided not to be exclusionary and stay right here in Secondary Grin

In circumstances where the centre assessment grade was lower than the mock grade, the student will receive the centre assessment grade.

Why Hmm? If they have so much faith in the CAG then why not use that for basis of appeal in the first place? Ofqual really do want to have their cake and eat it don’t they?

FloweringFlowers · 15/08/2020 18:50

So am I understanding this correctly, on appeal, if sat under the correct circumstances, Dd will be awarded the lower of the two (mock/cag)....

All fine, would like to understand how quickly they will be able to turn this around. New 6th will hopefully take into account this information if current school issues it on Thursday, fingers crossed.

MrsHamlet · 15/08/2020 18:52

Because if they give the CAG that invalidates everything they did that they were told to do by Gav.

MrsHamlet · 15/08/2020 18:54

@FloweringFlowers OCR will publish their info about how to appeal tomorrow. Priority appeals normally don't take very long so I'd like to think that the boards will turn them round quickly once they get the info from the school

Janie74 · 15/08/2020 18:55

@neutralintelligence Hear hear!

We will also be appealing everything we possibly can. DD has been online and seen the furore over the appeals (being forced to accept the lower of the mock grade and the CAG) and has been in floods of tears for the past hour. I am so angry and there is nothing I can do or say to make this outrageous injustice better for her.

neutralintelligence · 15/08/2020 18:56

The spirit that this is being done in is so nasty and mean. It is the whole attitude that I hate in this country of people only feeling they have succeeded if someone else is seen to fail, the feeling that your good mark is devalued if someone else gets the same mark, the feeling that a good mark is worth more if everyone else gets a lower mark.

An appeals process that focuses on the lowest possible mark can hardly be called an appeal. If they are withholding a higher mark with no possibility of using it in an appeal - that is not a proper appeal.

Back in March this is not what we were promised or led to expect.
A high grade that an employer might question does not devalue the grade. No-one can take away a high grade from you once awarded. But a low grade permanently deprives you of what you could and would have achieved - you can't sit and make excuses at every interview for the rest of your life; no-one will want to know.

FloweringFlowers · 15/08/2020 18:56

Thank you @MrsHamlet

stoneysongs · 15/08/2020 18:58

The stupid thing is that if they had just decided to go with CAGs when Scotland did, all of this would be over, the news cycle would have moved on and nobody would be calling on Gav to resign (unless he'd made another monumental cock up by then, which is always possible). This way it's going to go on for months and months and presumably cost millions. That's money that could have been spent solving the problem of the bulge year for universities. So extra funding where needed, or bursaries if people agree to defer etc.

Shimy · 15/08/2020 18:58

@FloweringFlowers Don’t forget its mock/CAG or you stick with her calculated grade.

neutralintelligence · 15/08/2020 19:00

@singingstones yes, I agree.
If they hadn't mentioned mocks I wouldn't even have raised it, but that was what they first offered and now it's in my head.
If they had just followed Scotland immediately and gone with CAGs we would have shut up and gone away (mostly, compared to the s*tonne of appeals we are all going to put in now).

stoneysongs · 15/08/2020 19:01

If the mock is higher than the CAG, do you get the CAG, or do you have to stick with the moderated grade?

Eg mock A star
CAG A
Moderated grade C

MrsHamlet · 15/08/2020 19:02

You get the CAG

neutralintelligence · 15/08/2020 19:03

It doesn't help the DailyFail running stories suggesting that Nicola Sturgeon is running the UK and calling all the shots. That basically means Gav and BJ can never do anything that she has done without being told NS is running the show.

BackInTime · 15/08/2020 19:04

If the number of appeals for A levels and GCSEs are as many as I think they are going to need a monumental size task force to get through each one.

stoneysongs · 15/08/2020 19:06

Ah ok so if you did better in your mock then the CAG is more reliable, but if you did better in the CAG then the mock is more reliable, makes perfect sense.
And all still no use for those who didn't sit mocks, or whose mocks don't fulfil the criteria.

neutralintelligence · 15/08/2020 19:06

@BackInTime - so our DC will be let down again because their results may not be correct by the start of term?

stoneysongs · 15/08/2020 19:07

Basically teacher assessments can only be trusted if you outperformed them in a mock, set and marked by the same teacher 👍
Honestly you couldn't make this shit up.

Shimy · 15/08/2020 19:08

Just so I can remember this:

We have awarded grades, CAG grades and Mocks.

So:
If Mock is higher than Awarded grade then you get Mock
If Mock is higher than CAG then you get CAG???
Confused
Can someone pls explain to me like a 5yr old?

I think CAG is now an anomaly because we have with 3 options which doesn’t make sense as OFQUAL have already rubbished the CAGs so why now is it suddenly a contender?

neutralintelligence · 15/08/2020 19:08

And whoever called it Task Force doesn't watch Brooklyn99, because that is immediately what I thought of.

stoneysongs · 15/08/2020 19:09

How on earth are schools going to handle all this - potentially thousands and thousands of appeals, each one requiring evidence of a higher grade, with the paper and mark system.

MrsHamlet · 15/08/2020 19:09

@Shimy
Mock is A
CAG is B
Grade is C

You get B on appeal if you meet the criteria

MrsHamlet · 15/08/2020 19:11

I'm hopeful that it will actually be fairly straightforward in that schools will appeal whole cohorts just by being able to send in the evidence, rather than individual appeals which take ages to prepare

Fiddlersgreen · 15/08/2020 19:13

“ Needs to be remedied by 1 September.”

DS has to enrol in his 6th form on results day, immediately after receiving his results.
Or if he decides to go to the local college instead which is now leaning towards, enrolment is 24th/25th August.
If he doesn’t get enough passes he won’t be able to enrol anywhere?
I’ve looked at his mocks and his “target” grades (are these the same as predicted? As this was all we’ve been given) and I think even with downgrading.
If they do that without historical data

Shimy · 15/08/2020 19:13

@MrsHamlet That can’t be. Thewhole point of the process is to appeal for one’s mocks. I’m just going to leave it now because I’m getting a headache.

stoneysongs · 15/08/2020 19:16

It is doing my head in Shimy

Let's say your CAG was an A but you've been moderated down to a C. Is this right?

If your mock was a B you could have a B

If your mock was an A you get an A.

If your mock was an A star you get an A. The CAG stops it going higher.

If your mock was a C or lower, no change? You don't get the CAG in this case?
