Sew in name labels

Hi all! I need help with sew in name labels! How do I sew them on? I don’t have a sewing machine. The name is very near the edges of the label, so quite likely my needle will hit the name as I sew. Do I just sew by hand along the left and right edge or sew all the way around? Is there a technique I should use? Is there a certain thread I should use?

I am clueless, as I have always used stick on labels but the school requires sewn in labels on some items! Please can someone help?!

It's worth looking for areas where you don't have to worry about the stitches showing on the wrong side - edges of pockets etc so you don't have to faff about with hemming type stitches. I agree sewing along the sides is worth it, doesn't need to be thorough just enough to stop things catching underneath and pulling the whole label off.
