Sew in name labels

Mintmallow88 · 23/07/2020 15:19

Hi all! I need help with sew in name labels! How do I sew them on? I don’t have a sewing machine. The name is very near the edges of the label, so quite likely my needle will hit the name as I sew. Do I just sew by hand along the left and right edge or sew all the way around? Is there a technique I should use? Is there a certain thread I should use?

I am clueless, as I have always used stick on labels but the school requires sewn in labels on some items! Please can someone help?!

I would just sew them in at each end. What a pain! Since the sew in label will probs come out I would also write the name in in marker pen.

JaJaDingDong · 23/07/2020 15:32

Sew them by hand. I sew all around though as they're less likely to come off then.
Use the same type of stitch you'd use for hemming.

JaJaDingDong · 23/07/2020 15:35

And if you're DC joins cubs or brownies, or a swimming club, or just about any club, get used to it - badges galore! Grin

If the labels are synthetic, polyester thread may sew more easily. Sew only the short ends. Use a whip-stitch, as that will hold the labels more securely, and is easier to sew. If you have some beeswax, rubbing the thread through that will make the thread less likely to tangle.

I do blanket stitch around each end, having folded the cut end inwards.

(I did try to find a picture, but we don't appear to have any named garments left, sorry!)

Mintmallow88 · 23/07/2020 18:11

Thanks all. Will have a google the stitches that you mention as I have no idea what kind of stitches they are. Shock

This is the kind of thing they used to teach us in school back in the day. Only the girls though, obvs. Grin

As I said on the Scouts badges thread. Glue gun.

Delta1 · 24/07/2020 06:53

My boys are starting a new school in Sept and need sew in (cash's) name labels on all their extensive uniform! Via a local FB group I've found a lady seamstress who does it very cheaply. Maybe ask around locally?

BikeRunSki · 24/07/2020 07:06

I just sew all the way round. Seeing just the beds always comes off for me.

Seeline · 25/07/2020 10:24

I recommend Cash's name tapes - they are much easier to see on than other makes.

I always sew all the way round - less likely to come out, and much herder for others to remove.

I just use a hemming stitch.

Problem with glueing them in is either the glue gives way with frequent washing, or they are impossible to remove which makes it hard to pass on/sell second hand when you have finished with it.

BikeRunSki · 25/07/2020 11:59

A woman after my own heart @Seeline. I agree with all those points!

YayGlitter · 25/07/2020 12:24

@Laurendelight does glue gun not wash off after a while? (I have literally hundreds of badges to put on camp blankets and I have a glue gun.)

eddiemairswife · 25/07/2020 18:54

I had 4 children. Used Cash's name tapes (surname only) and sewed on all the way round. I still have some left.

BikeRunSki · 25/07/2020 21:10

Wish we could get away with surname only! Should have given the DC my far more unusual surname!

Seeline · 26/07/2020 09:58

My mum had them done with my initial - surname - sibling's initial, so she could just turn the appropriate end over before sewing!

BikeRunSki · 26/07/2020 10:56

@Seeline, my mum did that too, but I’ve never understood the point, it’s not like you need fewer nametapes overall. She had red block capitals for the boys (o hace 2 brothers). And blue Copperplate for the girls
(I also have a sister). I always wanted to be the red block capitals!

Madcats · 26/07/2020 14:45

Some of my Cash's labels must be 10 years old! DD(13) gets grumpy if I don't tuck away the animal on the logo (for nursery before, she could read!). I sew round with something called a "whip stitch" (hopefully google will help you here) so that half the stitch goes up through clothing and label, the rest just goes through the clothing.

For things like hoodies/blazers/jumpers I tend to fold over the ends and just sew all around the last cm so she can hang the thing up on a peg. The most important thing there is to do a lot of stitches close together at the start and finish, possibly with a knot or 2.

If I am sewing all the way round, I don't tend to bother too much about the middle area.

lifesalongsong · 26/07/2020 15:00

@clary

I would just sew them in at each end. What a pain! Since the sew in label will probs come out I would also write the name in in marker pen.
I have the opposite problem, when I want to pass uniform on to the second hand sale or generic things to the charity shop I can't get my hand sewn labels off without resorting to scissors Grin

I'm no sewing expert, I just do normal stitches, I don't even know if they have a name, at each end and I've never had a problem, actually it hadn't occured to me until reading this thread that there might be some kind of proper way to do it.

Mintmallow88 · 26/07/2020 17:37

Thanks everyone for your help! Smile
While on the subject on labelling-does anyone label school ties or school socks? For school ties-I
am conscious of the fact that older kids might not like a name label showing on their school tie, should it happen to turn over and be exposed! Also for school socks-the only thing I can think of is to write the name in pen on the inside, as there is no label in socks...gawd this school labelling is giving me a headache! Confused

Label absolutely everything! Socks, rugby boots, towels, aprons, ties, the lot.

They still lose stuff but it has a better than half chance of finding its way back to you if it’s firmly labelled.

treeeeemendous · 26/07/2020 17:45

Unless they are boarding I wouldn't name socks.

Pe socks need to be named at our school so on rugby and football socks I sew both the ends of the name tape together like a loop and then sew this to the top of the sock which then gets turned over and tucked in and isn't seen. For white sports socks. I write his name in sharpie on the sole whilst he is wearing them 😁

Ericaequites · 26/07/2020 18:33

Buy woven name tags if possible. They last longer and don't wash out. I last had some for my late mother in pink with cats. She was in various nursing homes and hospitals. Only some underpants were lost, but Mother had double incontience with her dementia towards the end.

Truzza · 26/07/2020 18:47

@Mintmallow88
I just write on the clothes labels with a sharpie 🤷🏼‍♀️
I have been known to just write on the clothes inside of course!
😂

Seeline · 26/07/2020 18:52

For ties, sew them on the inside of the bit that goes around the neck, not on the end bits. They stay hidden whilst the tie is being worn, but easily spotted when they are all in a heap after PE 😁
