Should the school do more?

DD is 15 and has horrific period pain. For two years we’ve been to drs/clinics/hospitals/specialists trying to get a cure for her monthly agony. She misses a week every month, and stresses about catching up lessons and homework. This is only going to get worse as we head into her final year/exams.

My question is: does the school have to help us with a chronic illness. They do nothing, apart from set the truancy dept on us, even though we have drs letters and letters to teachers asking for work to be given so she can keep up. She’s an A student, but stressed over catching up. What’s the legal position of educating DD when she’s so ill once a month for a week. Seems really unfair on her.

I would ask your doctor for a referral to a Gynaecologist either private or through choose & book to a private hospital where the time restrictions on appointments aren't so tight. I honestly wonder if she has endometriosis, I suffer from it & so many of her symptoms are ringing bells with me. The gold standard of diagnosis is a laparoscopy & they may be able to remove some of it at the same time or may decide to talk with you both before deciding on a treatment plan. They will be able to help you & it is better to get it treated now because waiting could have consequences if she wants a family in the future. If you can get a clear diagnosis then you have something to fight school with as it is an on going condition & they have to make allowances for her.

OP, I’ve just saw your thread and it’s absolutely awful, of course, school should do more, their attitude is unbelievable. Not sure if it was mentioned but you could request school attendance policy and check what it says about absence for medical reasons and complain to governors. You shouldn’t receive these letters , you and your DD are stressed enough already.
Hope SENDIASS will help you. Flowers
