Hi, I'm being really lazy doing this, but does anyone have some good suggestions? DS is soon to be 11, and was reading a lot until recently. He's started re-reading HP, so wanted to get him something new to get stuck into. He's read the Hobbit and Lord of the Ring, also Rick Riorden and Alex Rider series. He seems to like series.....

My son is the same - doesn’t read as much as he used to but says he will if there is a good series to get in to. Have you tried ‘soon’ ‘now’ ‘then’ ‘after’ etc by Maurice Gleitzman? My DS liked them

Diary of a wimpy kid, tom gates, David Williams

Mumski45 · 29/09/2018 15:43

Depends on your child but my 10 and 12 year old DS's like the Gone series by Michael Grant and the Cherub Series by Richard Muchamore. There are about 17 Cherubs so should keep him going for a while if he enjoys them.

I have read both of these series myself and would say they may be aimed at slightly older kids so maybe not suitable for a "young" or sensitive 11 year old and it depends on the maturity of your DS.

Young Samurai series if he's interested in Japan and martial arts.

missyB1 · 29/09/2018 15:50

Micheal Morpurgo books are great, my 10 year old is working his way through them all.

Pumpkintopf · 29/09/2018 16:18

My son loved the Wolf Brother series by Michelle Paver at that age, also Rangers Apprentice and Brotherband series. He also liked a series as it meant encountering the characters over and over. Oh, and Artemis Fowl and Skulduggery Pleasant bit he may be a little young for those at the moment.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 29/09/2018 16:18

Michelle Paver's 'Chronicles of Ancient Darkness' series has been a huge hit with my 11 year old DS.

He really enjoyed the 'Alex Rider' books by Anthony Horowitz, too...

Chocolateflake · 29/09/2018 19:20

Ooh fabulous suggestions!! Had forgotten Michael Morpurgo! He's read a couple, gets very emotionally involved with them. He's polished off the Rangers Apprentice, Alex Rider and Artemis Fowl series, and loved all of them...

Eoin Colfer is a big hit with boys at my school. He writes the Artemis Fowl series

Woffulu · 29/09/2018 19:57

My 11 year old ds adores Michael Morpurgo and has read about 10 of his books - some I have read to him and we both love them. My dd however does not like 'sad books', so won't read any of them 😞

junebirthdaygirl · 29/09/2018 20:01

When my ds was that age he read and reread Muchamore. Waited expectantly for each one to come out and there was lots to look forward to. I have seen them a lot in charity shops recently as l suppose people are clearing out.

My 11yr old DS is really enjoying The Hunger Games atm.

Chocolateflake · 29/09/2018 20:07

I'm so glad I put this post on!! Thank you everyone Smile

Hunger Games trilogy. Bit dark but my friends 11 year old loved them and it ignited his love of reading again.

79abbot · 29/09/2018 23:05

My DS loves the new series by Andrew Lane:
AWOL 1 Agent Without Licence: Fast paced, spy action thriller.

CupboardDoors · 29/09/2018 23:16

My ds loves the young James Bond series by CHArlie Higson

FreshEyre · 30/09/2018 00:16

DS loves the Cherub series by Robert Muchamore. Young Bond by Charlie Higson is also very popular. I'm sure he's read some by Chris Ryan but would need to check which ones as some are adult books.

I would also look at some autobiographies depending on what he's into many are suitable for younger readers although many aren't.

Pumpkintopf · 30/09/2018 02:59

Op has he also read the Brotherband series? It's by the author of Rangers Apprentice.

2BorNot2Bvocal · 30/09/2018 09:01

Agree Young Samaurai
H.I.V.E series
Alex Rider series by Horowitz
Infinity Drake series

RockYourSocksOff · 30/09/2018 09:15

Ds (12) has absolutely loved the Zom-B books, although they might not be everyone’s cup of tea. I read some of them with him too but thought it best not to send them to school with him as not sure how they’d be received. Only the fact that he told me that they might be reading their home books out loud in class.

RockYourSocksOff · 30/09/2018 09:18

Oh and he absolutely LOVED the Pittacus Lore collection.

RockYourSocksOff · 30/09/2018 09:21

And Pax is a wonderful book too.

Sorry, titles keep springing to mind.
