Hi, I'm being really lazy doing this, but does anyone have some good suggestions? DS is soon to be 11, and was reading a lot until recently. He's started re-reading HP, so wanted to get him something new to get stuck into. He's read the Hobbit and Lord of the Ring, also Rick Riorden and Alex Rider series. He seems to like series.....

We're currently reading The Egde Chronicles at the moment, for bedtime story. Enjoyed by all (DD8, DS11 and DS12) and found the series randomly in a charity shop. It's a bit like Discworld for younger readers, I suppose. Very fantasy. It's a bit odd, but we're all hooked now.

Have you tried the Diamond Brother series by Anthony Horowitz? Really well written, with lots of comedy alongside mystery solving. How about the Terry Pratchett series which includes Johnny and the Bomb? We googled a reading list for year 7 and found lots of great recommendations, including Goldfish Boy which is about a boy with OCD.

Skullduggery was absolutely biggest hit for DS at 11 and still being read/reread at 12. He also liked Darkmouth series.

My ds likes all those you mentioned op and also I think they're called secret breakers by HL Dennis. Plus roman mysteries by Caroline Lawrence.

My boys enjoyed the Biggles books too.

I'd also recommend books by author Paul Dowswell, some are non fiction, others historical fiction.

Thank you everyone 😊 lots to keep him going. Just in case anyone else interested, we bought the Narnia chronicles in a charity shop a while ago. DS has read all of them twice ..nice that the old classics are still popular too 😉

My dc have all liked the Cherub series at that age. Dd1 and ds loved them.

But do have a look before handing them over. There's a lot of dinking/smoking and eyeing up (and further) girls. It's portrayed as very "normal". Read them first and see what you think.

Ds loves the Biggles books as another long series.

Agent 21 is also a series, I think there are 6 books.

My DD has read most of the books you mention. She loved the Alex Rider Series then Agent 21 by Chris Ryan. He also writes adult books so make sure you get the ones which mention Agent 21.

My DS loves the Podkin One Ear books by Kieran Larwood (there are 3 in the series so far).

I asked dd what she liked at that age:

How to train your dragon by Cressida Cowell
The Eragon series by Christopher Paolini
Percy Jackson (there have been new books recently)
The first two books of Hunger Games, but the last one was really sad.
The Divergent series, but again last book is sad. (perhaps 11 a little too young)
My Family and Other Animals

I'm going to borrow these suggestions for DS.

Has he tried the Edge Chronicles series? DS is rereading these (next book due out in the spring).

Chickoletta, just out of curiosity what are your thoughts on the Zom-B books?

I stumbled upon the series in The Book People site, Ds has devoured the series and really enjoyed the read. I was a bit Confused when we read part of them together and didn’t let him take them to school. They are books for children but possibly early teens. Ds is in Y7.

I’m an English teacher and can tell you that year 7 boys love the CHERUB series. There are hundreds of them too, so will keep him going for a while. I don’t think they’re terribly well written but if you just want to get him back into the habit of reading they’ll do the trick. I met Robert Muchamore once and thought he was a total knob, but that’s beside the point.
Tim Bowler is a brilliant writer for this age. I do Storm Catchers as a class reader and they love it - pacy kidnap thriller. He’s written lots of others and been nominated for the Carnegie etc.
If he liked LOTR then Robin Hobb might go down well.
Hope that helps.
