Its 2018....countdown to 1st March secondary school allocations!

Well two months down and two to go to 1st March. I have been fairly chilled since applications were submitted however now that 2018 is here it is creeping into my thoughts more frequently.

We are truly lucky to live in a town with very good secondary schools but I know DD would be heartbroken if she didn't get her first choice (a top 10 non selective girls school).

Realistically we should be virtually sure of a place as if we don't qualify on distance within our feeder school group then she should get a sports aptitude place (she score 10 percentage points higher than the required score for the last 3 years). However a part of me is still nervous as I imagine what if all 200 girls taking the aptitude test got amazing scores too. Logically I know this isn't the case as other girls at her school score 20-25 marks lower than DD but there are only 9 places available so the margin of error is small.

Anyone else beginning to get jittery? Please tell me I'm not alone.

Shattered04 I can’t see the link Smile. That’s annoying you have to wait. Good luck.

Shattered04 · 01/03/2018 11:24

Bucks is up: www.buckscc.gov.uk/media/4510684/allocation-profile-2018-final-2.pdf

Our worst possible scenario has come true. DD hasn't got in, and her best friends have (I know their distances)

I think I might cry.

Shattered04 · 01/03/2018 11:25

The cut off is literally between her and her friends.

Oh Shattered that's not good :(
But if you're that close on distance you must be near the top of the waiting list?

Shattered04 · 01/03/2018 11:33

Last year there was zero waiting list movement Sad

Guess we're going to have to appeal.

Shattered04 · 01/03/2018 11:34

The distance is literally 0.04 miles. 5.77 v 5.73 are the figures. I knew it was going to be borderline but this is ridiculous.

Gileswithachainsaw · 01/03/2018 11:34

We got out fifth choice so mixed feelings but there is no rule 6 distance this yr for our first choice so not sure how list will go. Waiting on other people to say so then I will know how far from getting in we really were

Stircrazyschoolmum · 01/03/2018 11:36

So sorry to hear that Shattered04... movement one year might not mean a certainty this year.. will keep fingers crossed!

Bored of waiting in London.. keep thinking they might declare a snow day, push the button and go home early.. fat chance!

GrockleBocs · 01/03/2018 11:36

Zero movement is surprising. Was that a one-off year or is that normal?
The appeals don't happen quickly :( and it's so difficult to handle the uncertainty, especially for our dc with autism.

Dancergirl · 01/03/2018 11:40

shattered so sorry to hear that Sad did you get your second choice school?

Shattered04 · 01/03/2018 11:41

Grockle I'm not sure. I think they moved the year before, but it's a Grammar. Not many people give up a Grammar.

Shattered04 · 01/03/2018 11:41

Dancergirl - no idea yet. I'll find out this afternoon I guess.. DD doesn't want to go there though. And whilst #3 would have been okay if she'd been with her friends, it won't be now.

Thethingswedoforlove · 01/03/2018 11:44

Kent emails are out early. We got our first preference Grin

GrockleBocs · 01/03/2018 11:54

Oh I can see that the grammar element complicates it. God, this is difficult.

MamaLupine · 01/03/2018 11:57

AvonCalling I was the same. DD's offer would just have been a formality too but I still worried that I'd made a balls of the application form! Our emails came through just after midnight here (Liverpool) though and she's in the school she got a place in based on the result of her aptitude for MFL exam. So relieved! I did give up alcohol for Lent but might have a glass of wine or three to celebrate later tonight!

starryeyed19 · 01/03/2018 12:03

Damn it, Herts just sent out a general email newsletter and I almost jumped out of my skin!

Heartshapedfairylights · 01/03/2018 12:03

Still being tortured here in London. I went to see the Head’s PA today. She was so stroppy! I asked her if she knew and she said yes but couldn’t say. Apparently the council are dragging their feet, giving the school the lists so I wonder if we’ll get to hear on time.

HolyShet · 01/03/2018 12:06

Oh shattered that sounds gutting

But you are so very close, surely you'd be very high up the waitlist, and someone is bound to move/go private/pick another grammar. sit tight and hope.

I've started another thread about supporting DC who didn't get the schools they wanted. Just had a bit of a moan

HolyShet · 01/03/2018 12:07

Oh Mama I think I know the school you mean! (or its one of 2) Great!

Shattered04 · 01/03/2018 12:10

Thanks HolyShet. I'm going to wait until I get the official confirmation before posting there just in case. I think it's definite though - I just remembered (how did I not twig?) that the headteacher did say "If you need our help with anything, let me know". That was my heads-up.

I can't believe it - what are the odds that this scenario would happen? Literally four hundredths of a mile. 64 metres.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 01/03/2018 12:16

Shattered04 oh no how disappointing sorry. We got DDs first choice Grammar in Bucks, very pleased. People do move, leave, and we know one family who rejected their Grammar place in favour of private at the 11th hour.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 01/03/2018 12:19

Yes Mama definitely Wine tonight. DD is my youngest so we’re all done now... until yr12/uni places Shock

Sittinginthesun · 01/03/2018 12:25

Shattered oh no. Sad

Talith · 01/03/2018 12:28

We got the first choice thank goodness. After going through the trauma of tuition and 11+ and subsequent failure to get the points for grammar last year I wish I could go back in time and say to myself, don't bother with all that, just have a good look at the local academies and don't be so instantly dismissive of anything non-grammar. DC will be going to an outstanding well-funded school just up the road and their friends will largely be there too. They are happy and so are we. Thank Christ that's all over for two years anyway.... Fingers crossed for everyone still waiting. It's so stressful all round, I didn't sleep much last night x
