I remember our GCSE one 2 years ago. It was a haven! I hesitate to start this as I'm not totally confident of wanting to post DDs results in the end, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
So, how's the revision going? What are the tricky subjects for anyone's DC?
DD is revising steadily, but then she always does and has had some disastrous module results, so not filled with massive confidence. Biology is her issue - she knows and understands it but can't seem to give the examiner what they are looking for. We've had papers back and her tutor says she hasn't answered anything incorrectly, just hasn't said precisely what the examiner wants. Seems so unfair.

I'm stressing. Anyone else?

Numerical Methods (NM) and C3 today. Ds wants an A in Maths and mucked up his coursework so needs to achieve 93% today in C3. An A will do nicely thank you but Ds wants the so fingers crossed for him. His NM is a bit dodgy as he finds it so boring so we know this module will bring down his grade but we are hoping he does okay so the Further Maths is a competitive grade.

Good luck to everyone this week. Smile

bruffin · 16/06/2014 08:16

DS has C3 today as well. DS after an A as well but he has to get 180 ums over C3 and C4 to get the A and get away with 39 % for S1, I think. It doesnt seem fair because if he was t get 179 ums on c3 and c4 and a 100 ums for S1 he only gets an A.
He has been doing well in C3 but every so often a question will throw him, but his friends have found the same.

Cardibach and Fanta i know others that have been in tears over Chemistry. It is supposed to be the hardest A level of all, so it's wonderful they have come this far. DS is worrying about getting his A in physics at the moment, its going to be borderline.
DS has C3 today, C4 and physics on wednesday and thursday and finally FP3 next monday, then prom that night and off with his gf to Iceland for a week then next morning.

BeckAndCall · 16/06/2014 12:19

Oh dear. C3 paper was apparently a standard regular paper that DD should have been able to get 95+ on. But she didn't. She's talking about a B, but I'm not sure how pessimistic she is really being.

She needs an A minimum overall - her A * can be in any science so all is not lost but given that she hates C4 she was really hoping for the best.....

We'll just have to wait and see.........

bruffin · 16/06/2014 14:30

DS has said the same Beckandcall.
he has been getting over 90% on practise papets but didnt seem very happy about this one

KittiesInsane · 16/06/2014 14:53

DS says C3 maths was 'Meh'.

Pressed for details, he says there were three bits that definitely didn't work out to anything probable.

I am hoping this means three marks rather than three 6-mark questions...

summerdip · 16/06/2014 15:07

oh Crikey! What boards are your DC doing for Maths?

DS is still in an exam so no feedback yet.

bruffin · 16/06/2014 15:23

ocr

yourlittlesecret · 16/06/2014 15:37

Don't be surprised if they under estimate their performance. DS is doing AQA maths and FM which does them sequentially. He did all the Maths modules last year and is doing all the FM this year. They all get cashed in at the end. After C4 last year he was despondent, thought he hadn't done as well as he needed. He convinced me as well, yet lo and behold on results day he had done really well.
I wonder if it is partly because there is quite a leap from AS to A2 in Maths?

It was Stats2 today. He is okay with stats but it's his least favourite maths topic. No one seems to like statistics from what I can tell. DS2 has stats GCSE next week and while he doesn't find it too hard he doesn't enjoy it.

summerdip · 16/06/2014 18:39

OCR here too. He feels okay but what worried me is that while checking he found he had mistakes in the first two questions and sorted it so he says. Silly mistakes my son's downfall as he works at speed.

Numerical methods better than last year - thinks he did well but there were two questions he did not know much about . Fingers crossed.

My Ds is fairly positive about all of his exams but as he rightly says that means nothing - silly mistakes can be in there and pull down marks.

3 still to go. Lots of Physics revision still needed.

whatsinaname01 · 16/06/2014 18:58

Edexcel Maths here today.
DS drives me nuts as he won't talk about his exams at all! In some ways I suppose it's good but in others Aahh!!
OCR Chemistry tomorrow.
At the moment he's on his Playstation, I'm questioning this but I suppose I should trust him.
Roll on Friday and sanity returns.

prettydaisies · 16/06/2014 19:00

DS (y12) did core 3 today. He was quite pleased. DD had 2nd geog paper and is hopeful that she may have done well enough for the A*. Just physics for her now which she is worried about as she found the first paper hard and she needs an A. DS has core 4 on weds and then is finished too.

FantaSea · 16/06/2014 19:13

bruffin thank you, DD has found Chemistry so hard.

She did C3 today (edexcel) and is reasonably happy with it but ran out of time, she could have done with another quarter of an hour. She said the proof was one she had seen before and also the trig question worked so I am happy - it could have been so much worse. Chemistry (OCR) tomorrow which I will be glad to have behind us.

BeckAndCall · 16/06/2014 20:02

DD just asked me to test her for chemistry tomorrow - I can't even pronounce the words! Luckily she knew the answers even though I was clearly making up my bit.......

I'm glad it's an afternoon exam - she's so much better in the PM than the AM!

summerdip · 16/06/2014 20:41

Funny that isn't it. I think teenagers are in the zone by midday - they're so sleepy until then.

cardibach · 16/06/2014 20:43

DD has been to her Chemistry teacher today and found out that she already (probably) has enough UMS marks to pass! As it's an 'extra' A level, that will do nicely. A move to d or C would be lovely but not imperative. She is much happier tonight. Exam is pm so she will work with a friend in the morning and hopefully get some marks!
Good luck to all DCs tomorrow.

That's brilliant news Cardi! Big hug for your DD and hope the paper is not too odd tomorrow. My DD is getting high marks on the past papers but bracing herself for what Edexcel have in store tomorrow!

cardibach · 16/06/2014 21:11

DDs is WJEC HP. Bit just odd questions, but odd phrasing as it has more than likely been written in Welsh and translated ...

FantaSea · 16/06/2014 21:21

cardi fantastic news! What a relief Smile you must feel like a weight has been lifted.

We have had more tears tonight over the Chemistry. I will feel so much better at 3.30pm tomorrow when it is over.

Very best of luck to all DC for exams tomorrow Smile

HPparent · 16/06/2014 21:35

It's DD's birthday today and she is still revising!

RosieRain · 16/06/2014 23:16

Good luck to all the DCs tomorrow. My DS has been getting high marks on his chemistry past papers but it isn't making him feel any more secure after last weeks awful paper. Cardi that's great news, less pressure for your DD. HP hope the birthday revision pays off for your DD. Fanta let's hope this OCR paper is not so bad! hope your DD is ok. Smile

KittiesInsane · 17/06/2014 13:59

Dear DS, maths tomorrow followed by physics on Thursday does NOT leave a day in between to revise the physics.

How has this not occurred to you before now?

And why do you think it will help to come downstairs at 10-minute intervals to agonize over it all over again, rather than, y'know, doing the effing revision??

HPparent · 17/06/2014 15:38

Well Edexcel have really excelled themselves this time! Unit 5 Chem was worse than Unit 4 according to DD and girls were crying as they came out. These are girls with med-school and Oxbridge offers.

Lower grade boundaries do not necessarily level the playing field, with the additional stress causing the candidates to make more panicked mistakes in my opinion. I don't know what the fuck they are playing at! I hope the school stops using their services.

BeckAndCall · 17/06/2014 16:31

Oh HP I'm so sorry for your DD. Does she need an A or an A * in Chem?

OCR salters was OK - it's the first exam where DD has come out looking happy.

HPparent · 17/06/2014 16:38

Thanks BeckandCall. Glad OCR was better. Yes DD needs an A for her Uni course, though she is taking a gap year and applying in September. I am just trying to work out how I can afford one of those posh tutorial colleges for a resit! Personally I would encourage her to do a different board as I think she will have to do all 4 papers and the practicals again. Just been looking at the threads on Studentroom and everyone feels that Edexcel have gone too far this time! I hope the Unis drop the grades for the candidates affected but that won't help DD much.

cardibach · 17/06/2014 16:52

So sorry for your DD HP. It really isn't fair. I haven't seen my DD yet as she has Bio tutoring, but she says she got some marks ... Her teacher said it was a good paper, but I'll see what she says. After yesterday's news that she had already passed I don't think she cares! Hard work for 2 more days now until BY5 on Friday. All her friends finished today, so it will be difficult for her to get motivated, but it just has to be done. Almost over!
