Y13 support thread, anyone?

I remember our GCSE one 2 years ago. It was a haven! I hesitate to start this as I'm not totally confident of wanting to post DDs results in the end, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
So, how's the revision going? What are the tricky subjects for anyone's DC?
DD is revising steadily, but then she always does and has had some disastrous module results, so not filled with massive confidence. Biology is her issue - she knows and understands it but can't seem to give the examiner what they are looking for. We've had papers back and her tutor says she hasn't answered anything incorrectly, just hasn't said precisely what the examiner wants. Seems so unfair.

I'm stressing. Anyone else?

Some optimistic souls on Studentroom are saying the markers might have been generous and that is why the boundaries are higher than expected for the tricky exams - not that I believe that but a bit of hope to cling on to!

Good luck for tomorrow for all our kids and I hope everyone gets the grades they need for the next step.

FantaSea · 13/08/2014 18:25

HP I hadn't thought of it that way, but I am hoping that applies to the chemistry.

HPparent · 13/08/2014 22:10

One of DD's friends has seen the mark scheme for the first Edexcel Chem paper and thinks it is on the generous side, so it may be true. I think they try and make the boards roughly equal so it may apply to OCR as well.

boys3 · 13/08/2014 23:28

Best wishes for all DCs for tomorrow.

BackforGood · 14/08/2014 08:55

Well, not had the results yet, but ds has gone online and had confirmation he's got a place at the university of his choice!

Feeling thrilled for him and relieved, as I wasn't convinced.

Here's hoping everyone else gets good news today Smile

HPparent · 14/08/2014 09:01

That's lovely news BackforGood, what a relief. Celebration time for everyone!

BackforGood · 14/08/2014 09:08

Yes, I guess I won't see him for a while - quite rightly he'll be with his friends as they celebrate / commiserate together this morning.
Am leaving it to him to text his Nan, etc., so I put it on here as I wanted to tell someone Grin

HPparent · 14/08/2014 09:11

Have a great day, you all deserve it!

nostress · 14/08/2014 09:40

Good luck everyone!

HPparent · 14/08/2014 10:06

Bad news here. DD is devastated. A*, A and B in fucking chemistry - thanks Edexcel!

She is one UMS mark off the A, so less than half a mark. If she had applied to Uni they probs would have accepted her. The school are requesting all 4 scripts (she resat AS) back and will send the most likely ones back for remark.

She has to have an A for her uni course - so near - yet so far.

nostress · 14/08/2014 10:11

Fingers crossed for the remark. Is she having a gap year?

HPparent · 14/08/2014 10:18

Yes, not sure if that is a good or bad thing! I think if she had got an offer they may well have taken her as she was so close. But she will have to resit if the mark stays the same or heaven forbid goes down! I have never heard of an offer that was less than an A for chemistry. Her subject is Vet Medicine.

cardibach · 14/08/2014 11:59

DD didn't get into her first choice and her insurance are still making up their minds! It's outrageous - they have had the results since Monday, why on earth don't they know who they are accepting? She has phoned 3 times and got her Head of Sixth to phone. At this point she got an email address and she has emailed her details to them. Without confirmation it is impossible to do anything - if it is a no she can't get on to clearing without a clearing number. Really worrying. She has 100 UCAS points more than her offer, but in a different form.

Oh Cardi, that's a nightmare.
Like you say, you'd have thought they would be able to let them know on the day, as they've had the results before the dc.
Fingers crossed for you.

HPparent · 14/08/2014 12:02

So sorry to hear that cardi. What a stupid system to keep the kids in limbo. I hope they make up their minds soon,

onadifferentplanet · 14/08/2014 13:58

We are stuck in similar limbo, Ds got A* B C needed 3 Bs . Insurance has changed to unconditional but firm choice still to make up their minds and said on phone to just be patient . Poor DS is sitting at home while all friends out celebrating in case he has to make more calls or provide information. How long can the wait be?

HPparent · 14/08/2014 14:09

Its ridiculous like going through a second round of the admission process.

cardibach · 14/08/2014 14:09

It's ridiculous isn't it? At least your DS knows he is going somewhere though... (not doing competitive misery, just feeling sorry for DD and self )

I remember you and your DD from the GCSE thread cardi and have followed your story since. Your DD has done her best. I think you have every reason to feel like that, I do hope things get resolved today.

boys3 · 14/08/2014 14:49

cardi that is so frustrating for your DD, hope the insurance get her an answer without too much delay. Did she overscore in the subject she wants to study? Fingers crossed for you.

HP DS1 is off down to remark route too However he met his insurance offer and still very much likes that as a potential destination. Timescales are a bit of a bigger concern. His first choice is still open and seem happy to wait for remark info. Insurance I think keep their offer open until end Aug - he really needs to check that out - but potential risks there about accommodation availability if news on the remark drags on.

HPparent · 14/08/2014 15:01

boys3 I thought it would be over today! What a dilemma for your DS. My DD is 1 ums out of 600 short - ie 1/6 of a percent. Her teacher wanted to see the scripts before committing to a remark. He thought she would have been offered had she applied this year and could still get an unconditional offer with 1 ums short. I am not convinced but feel like she is walking a tightrope.

boys3 · 14/08/2014 15:25

HP I certainly hoped it would be over today, and he could then focus on where he is going, accommodations plans etc.

I'd hope a remark could find that 1 ums needed for your DD to support her applications.

cardibach · 14/08/2014 19:34

We may have a happy ending - still no answer from Coventry, but an offer from another Uni for another course. She has lit up with enthusiasm for it though! Looks like a happy change of direction. Just need to negotiate release from Coventry offer.

Phew, that's good news Cardi! Sounds promising.

cardibach · 14/08/2014 20:44

I hope so, HP ! Hoped it would be all done and dusted by now :(
