The school coat problem.....?

Whippet · 16/01/2012 16:29

-3 C when DS left for school this morning...... in his BLAZER Shock

What do you do?
Is there a solution?
He is only in his second term of secondary, so this is a new phenomenon for me...

There is no 'official' school coat as such, but it has to be plain black or navy and long enough to cover his blazer apparently.

He already has a NEXT black moleskin jacket, and a more casual black jacket too... bu won't wear either...

Help.

Interesting. Superdry is what the posh girls wear at dd's school.

webwiz · 17/01/2012 18:23

DS has a locker -he loses the key within the first few weeks of the school year and then owns up in the last weeks of the summer term when its time to hand in the key and he needs some cash for the replacement fee Hmm

DexterTheCat · 17/01/2012 18:26

I don't think there is a solution to this one. It's not about getting your child to wear it coat it's ensuring the whole school do!!!

DS1 who has just started senior school will not wear the coat I bought him despite it being the one he picked and choose. Once he arrived at at school at the beginning of term and found out no one wears a coat that was it. He will not wear it. He wears his blazer but refuses the jumper. Bizarrely this is the same child who at home sits huddled next to the radiator when watching tv and once complained in June that the radiator wasn't on to warm his uniform in the morning!! He does wear trendy woolly hat though!!

DS2 on the other hand who has just started juniors is superglued to his coat because 'Miss' said they have to bring it even though they have blazers. He also loves his jumper but seemingly in junior school jumpers are 'cool' (probably why they're not in seniors!!)

If they don't want to wear q coat, then they don't wear coats. They won't come to any harm. And they'll come to their senses one day.

MrsJAlfredPrufrock · 17/01/2012 18:38

No coat shouts: "I am so unsure of myself, I don't even trust myself to choose a coat." It's just idiotic not to wear coat.

seeker · 17/01/2012 18:39

Yep. Completely idiotic. But it's their idiocy.

Sparklingbrook · 17/01/2012 18:40

It's not idiotic if you don't want to carry it round school all day though.

usualsuspect · 17/01/2012 18:40

Teenagers are not known to be sensible , were you?

Sparklingbrook · 17/01/2012 18:41

I remember going clubbing as a teenager And never took a coat because I didn't want to queue for it from the cloakroom at the end of the night.

grumpypants · 17/01/2012 18:42

oh god, we spent hours trudging round trying to find a coat that fitted over the stoopid obligatory blazer. Eventually found one in Bench (thin anorak/windcheater type). Really hate blazers.

NormanTheForeman · 17/01/2012 18:49

Do they not have anywhere to hang up coats in school now then? When I was at secondary school we all had coat hooks, and most people had a coat (in winter anyway) and hung them up for the day, only retrieved them before going home...........

Sparklingbrook · 17/01/2012 18:51

No coat hooks, no lockers Norman. Everything they take in has to be carried from lesson to lesson. Sad

exoticfruits · 17/01/2012 18:52

Apparently not-they carry them-mine had a locker, but if they got a coach at the end of the day there was no time to use it!

NormanTheForeman · 17/01/2012 19:02

So why is there nowhere to hang coats up these days? When I was at school, if it was wet, my coat would be wet when I arrived, and needed to hang up to avoid being damp and horrible when I put it on at the end of the day. Why can't teenagers hang thir coats up?

They can do this at the primary school my ds is at...........

There is 1400 children at DS's High School. I think it's a space issue. But if everyone had a v. expensive coat hung up in the cloakroom would it (sadly) be a security one?

NormanTheForeman · 17/01/2012 19:09

Well there were 1000 pupils at my secondary school - and we had space to hang up coats. Never knew one go missing except for rare occurrence where someone took someone else's by mistake (usually sorted next day). Wonder what has happened in the last 30 odd years...........

bigTillyMint · 17/01/2012 19:09

DD Y7 last year - blazer and big scarf, even through the snow Shock

DD Y8 this year - hoodie under blazer, padded jacket on top plus big scarf. Still moaning about the cold Hmm

She has a locker, but it is full of her footy and other sports stuff and no room for a coat.

Grimma no need to go shopping, just look here

bigTillyMint · 17/01/2012 19:13

Norman, things have changed.

Having said that, I don't remember wearing a coat to school back in the day, but I'm sure I did. Maybe I shoved it in a locker....

Sparklingbrook · 17/01/2012 19:15

My school coat 30 years ago came from Woolworths and not £100 from North Face/Superdry/ or wherever the must have coat has to be bought Norman. Sad

What's the reason they don't wear coats at your school Mutt?

NormanTheForeman · 17/01/2012 19:21

So do not even the children from poorer families have cheap coats, Sparkling? Just wondering, as I went to a Grammar school, fairly middle class, but most of the kids there didn't have particularly expensive coats.

Thanks Tilly!

Though given the weight of books she regularly carries, I sort of want to quietly forget this so she carries on using rucksack. She has a locker, but doesn't seem to use it much.
