The school coat problem.....?

Whippet · 16/01/2012 16:29

-3 C when DS left for school this morning...... in his BLAZER Shock

What do you do?
Is there a solution?
He is only in his second term of secondary, so this is a new phenomenon for me...

There is no 'official' school coat as such, but it has to be plain black or navy and long enough to cover his blazer apparently.

He already has a NEXT black moleskin jacket, and a more casual black jacket too... bu won't wear either...

Help.

Carrier bag from Wilko's for her birthday then Grimma. Grin

MoreBeta · 18/01/2012 19:00

At DSs school the BAG to have for boys is a Gola Bag whilst for girls it is a Jack Wills carrier.

GeorgeEliot · 18/01/2012 19:07

unfortunately at ds school it is just not cool to wear a coat.

Blazers are only for special occasion, so he waits at the bus stop in just his shirt and acrylic jumper. Even in the snow. No chance of getting him to wear a vest or T shirt underneath.

bigTillyMint · 18/01/2012 19:07

Grimma I am well impressed! So what bag is she hoping to get? Hopefully not one of the £££ Cath Kidston bags which are the other top choice of the girls round here. Posh ones, of course. Other bags are large handbags which are definitely totally unsuitable (no doubt DD will want one of these next yearGrin)

Sparklingbrook · 18/01/2012 19:09

I have seen those huge handbags, they look like the bags my mum kept her knitting in. Grin

GrimmaTheNome · 18/01/2012 19:11

Tilly - no idea, except I very much doubt Cath Kidston either.

bigTillyMint · 18/01/2012 19:13

Yes, exactly Sparkling!

My dd refused to wear a coat once she started secondary school. she has an almost 2 mile walk to school. On a totally freezing day I flipped out and insisted - cue major aggro.

That evening I told her I had been wrong to insist and if she wanted to freeze he tits off it was her decision and I would never insist again as long as she didn't moan to me about being cold on the way to school. She decided to carry on wearing her coat.

I do suggest wearing warmer clothes to her sometimes but always let her make the final decision with the proviso that there will be no moaning if she regrets her decision later Grin !!

JugglingWithSnowballs · 18/01/2012 21:12

You sound like a wise woman to me EFA
Don't know if I could have your resolve though !

maypole1 · 18/01/2012 21:33

My son after threatening to deduct 50p a day from his pocket money if he gose without a coat seems to of done the trick

Ds get sick very easily nd I can't be doing with the puffy eyes and the wimpering for soup

triplets · 18/01/2012 23:22

Thank goodness, its not only my house! My 14 yr old triplets are driving me insane, well tbh two of them are. Thomas is all wrapped up like Scott of the Antartic, he hates to be cold. James comes down in a s/sleeve shirt, nothing underneath it, and goes to school wearing a then hoody. Rebecca comes down shirt, cardigan and will wear her new coat, bomber style jkt, but never ever does she wear the sleeves down, she always pushes her sleeves up. When I ask them to put on a warmer coat those two claim they don`t have anything and say they would it it were a Jack Hills!! There are no pegs or lockers at their school, they go out loaded poor things............crazy!

scotlass · 18/01/2012 23:32

Strangely reassured to read this thread today

DD NEVER wears a coat. Even when it's minus whatever.

Quite glad they have to wear blazers for school now. However cannot help but PMSL when they all troop off to the bus stop with the sleeves rolled up in the style of Don Johnson in Miami Vice which they think makes them look so cool

My biggest bug bear at the moment is the fight over foot wear for PE. She insists everyone wears their converse all stars and DH insists she wears proper trainers. Apparently she is known as the girl with the worst trainers ever Hmm

The school bag of choice here is Pauls costafeckinfortuneBoutique

i love this thread.

this week chez moi it has been down to -40 (and a bit below, first thing in the morning), so obv the local school bus service has been reminding parents not to abandon dc's at bus stops, wrap them up warm, make sure the goddamn bus arrives or take them home etc etc. you really oughtn't to potter about with any skin showing.

the local tv channel have been running a special interviewing teens. Grin -40 and they are wandering about with no coats, or maybe a coat but no scarf or hat. and tennis shoes. in the snow. at -40. Grin i thought you ladies might want to know that there are much harder teens about in the world than yours. and much more exasperated parents. i think even my 8yo goes to school without a hat and gloves at -4. Grin

if we ever move back to the uk and my teens want to go to school without a coat, i swear i will not complain. if they are that stupid then only a good bout of hypothermia will cure it.

nooka · 19/01/2012 01:35

We are at about -30 here in BC (I'm guessing you might be in Alberta?) Our local family ski resorts is closed - the conditions report just says 'Too Cold'!

At school (elementary) ds tells me everyone had coats, and lots of them had ski pants too. He was complaining that the principle didn't let them go sledging at lunch time though.

startail · 19/01/2012 02:14

What is it with sleeves? DD2 is only in Y6 and already pushes up her sleeves even when it's freezing.

outofbodyexperience · 19/01/2012 02:29

Grin yup.

Forecast to be warmer by the weekend... About -9. It will be positively springlike!

nooka · 19/01/2012 02:34

It's supposed to be above freezing for us on Sunday. We've not had that cold a winter so far, so I really shouldn't complain, in truth I don't really mind it being cold, it's the cutting wind over the last few days that's been brutal.

I read that exposed skin got frostbitten in less than 10mins at -40, so I'm amazed that you seen teens not dressed up. Still Canadians do seem pretty hardy!

outofbodyexperience · 19/01/2012 03:04

That's exactly what they were trying to tell these teens in Calgary... They were just doing that teenagery 'honestly I'm trying to listen but it's going in one ear and straight out of the other' face. The presenter asked if they had snow boots at home and they just looked at her like she had landed from mars.

We're out of the city, for which I remain eternally thankful. Hopefully mine will continue to wear their mitts...!

seeker · 19/01/2012 06:30

Well, obviously if it's -30 you insist, but generally speaking you're not going to come to any harm in Croydon if you venture out without a coat!

exoticfruits · 19/01/2012 07:53

You should go to Newcastle on a Saturday night in winter and see young women out-they do not dress for the weather and they appear to survive!
If it is really cold they will do something about it, you don't see someone going up the Eiger without the right clothing!
I suggested mine to wore a T shirt under their shirt, and beyond muttering they might suffer from hypothermia, left them to it.

musicposy · 19/01/2012 08:33

I've noticed that for the first winter in ages, my 16 year old is wearing a coat again! One of her choice, that she paid for, and now she wears it everywhere. So hope for those of you with 11 or 14 year olds. :)

My 12 year old will not wear a coat. At all. Even in minus temperatures, even if she has a 3 mile walk. This is a new thing this year.

They look laughable walking down the street, one in a coat, and the other in just a sweatshirt, shivering but pretending she's just fine.

IdontknowwhyIcare · 19/01/2012 09:13

haha funny, here its currently between 12 and 14 c in the morning, school only have a jumper on the very strict uniform list. Ds wears a hoody over the top as he considers it soooooo cold. (Dubai).

Jux · 19/01/2012 09:16

DD has a good wool coat, which she really likes, so she wears quite often, especially when there's snow on the ground. She says her blazer is really warm though.

She will grow up to be a weakly, sickly adult who constantly complains about draughts, and expects to be pampered.

JugglingWithSnowballs · 19/01/2012 09:20

Or perhaps she'll grow into a warm hearted woman who always makes excellent choices Jux ? Grin
