How do Scottish nationalists explain this?

Why do Scottish separatists talk about how as an independent nation, they’d do so well with all of their resources and without the English controlling them?

If Scotland gained independence, couldn’t England then wage war on Scotland and forcefully seize all of Scotland’s resources anyway.

Then what would the Scottish do about it?

They rely on the notion of the English being nice.

God this forum needs the "laugh" reaction back.

Blinkett · 25/09/2026 22:17

What ‘resources’ are these?

cityliving99 · 25/09/2026 22:29

If you mean oil, then before independence -ownership of waters where drilling occurs, would be confirmed.
I don’t think the English would march up to Scotland to take all the assets. What on earth makes you think this?

Willowback · 26/09/2026 01:48

If England invaded Scotland the US would send in forces to protect Scotland - we're their favourite!

Darragon · 26/09/2026 02:03

You ok op??

Merrybandofpirates · 26/09/2026 02:10

You going to march up and take over all the whisky distilleries? Station guards around the wind turbines? What about our all our water sources, which is also a lot better than yours Have boats patrolling the oil fields? No. Any wrangling will be political. If England tried any acts of war, the other home nations would support Scotland, the EU would support Scotland and the US would support Scotland. Good luck.

swimsong · 26/09/2026 02:16

I think the residents of Cloud Cuckoo Land are more likely to vote to secede from the United Kingdom. They pay taxes but haven't even got representation in parliament - and we all know how that turned out across the pond in the 1860s.

Ziga · 26/09/2026 03:21

This OP is insane

Blinkett · 26/09/2026 05:52

I mean oil and wind are owned by the companies that produce them, not the Scottish government. The Scottish government just grant them licences. OP surely knows this? And England have said countless times that piping water from Scotland will never be economical. But OP clearly doesn’t have a clue.

Aye, but what would Trump want in return ?

He would likely want to flatten Cumbernauld and build a golf course there.

Oh wait.

:-)

And Cumbernauld has an airport.. for wee planes.

What other places can we put on the list ?

scotland does not necessarily own the water where the companies are drilling. Both the Shetlands and England have a claim to some of the waters.

Coffeeandallthebooks · 26/09/2026 08:08

England has tried to take over Scotland since the 8th century by military force and has failed.
The 1707 treaty of union didn't involve military supremacy.
Currently a third of the UK armed forces are Scottish, will they be relied upon to make war on their own country, or will they try it with only two thirds of their forces?

It is hilarious if this is how desperate Unionists are - we'll get the army to go after you if you succeed, just you see!

I am not sure that is correct.
where is your evidence that the EU would side with Scotland? They have already said you would need to meet the financial requirements for entry and to take the Euro.
i think you need to also realise that we also have whiskey distilleries, wind turbines etc. we also have amazing vineyards now due to the milder weather.
i can’t see anyone marching up to Scotland.
More likely the other way round.

Dearg · 26/09/2026 08:12

Curious about ‘ all their resources’ 🤔

Op, I don’t think our neighbours would care…

AStonedRose · 26/09/2026 08:12

All 'our' nukes are in Scotland.

Your move, OP.

Genuinely, this is the least intelligent thing I've read in a long time.

What a punchy take on catastrophic climate change!

Is that you, Rupert?

LlynTegid · 26/09/2026 08:17

I support Scotland being an independent nation, and indeed Wales.

It's an academic question as there is not going to be a referendum for either country this decade.

I just wish the SNP were competent in government, as they are the best argument against independence.

Er, it would be an illegal war under international law, so effectively, they’d be obliged to.
Countries are not just allowed to invade other countries because they fancy it or they want to take their resources. It has to be self defence. This was why the false claims about WMD were so crucial in the Iraq war - the legality of the war depended upon the credibility of the claims.

Explain that, OP?

Deafnotdumb · 26/09/2026 08:34

If Scotland did leave the Union, we would wish them well and there would be immense haggling over the debt split, pension obligations, use of the pound etc, nuclear subs etc. It would be messy. But I don't think anyone would expect a war between neighbours. What on earth would be the point, when it can be resolved via trade?

And yes: England has never conquered Scotland. If anything, its been the reverse with Scottish royalty, inventions and ideas taking over England, along with the cross border flow of people.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 26/09/2026 09:52

People who take this view seem to be missing two pertinent facts -

First, there is nothing about Independence which mandates SNP government in perpetuity

Secondly, if they dislike the SNP so much that they'd like to see the back of them, then bringing about Indi is the best way to go about that. The SNP certainly isn't going anywhere until Indi is done and dusted, and post-Indi the glue that holds the party together is gone, and you'd most likely see people drift off to more natural political homes.

I do understand why current governance is often posited as an argument against Indi, but in reality that argument is baseless because the status quo says absolutely nothing about a hypothetical future where significant things are fundamentally different.
