Nazi salute in Glasgow

From reading the bbc article, it sounds as though the individual performing the Nazi salute was not arrested? I’m disgusted! How do Police Scotland really think all this unrest will end if they don’t arrest people for blatant hate crimes?

The Nazi salute is not illegal, I believe only in Australia is it actually a criminal offence to do in public.

Do you like Nazi salutes? Do you approve of the Nazis and the atrocities they committed. Go and educate yourself if you don't understand why someone would be disgusted. You're either a Nazi or an anti Nazi there is no grey area when it comes to them.

The BBC photos makes it look like there were loads of fascists there. There were about 40 men max to 3-4k anti racists. It was really heartening to see the turn out against racism and fascism and the huge age range from kids to elderly opposing it.

The fascists were spoiling for a fight and when they were let out the kettle a bunch of them tried to approach the protesters from a different angle but were chased off by Police. You could see they were just wee boys from their size.

I just hope the streets are quiet in town tonight & that people stay safe from the morons. They were so angry that the police were kettling them. I think they expected the police to take their side.

A Nazi salute is antisemitic and in the context of it's use at this rally would appear to be very much a hate crime.

Nazi salutes are antisemitic and have been prevalent at pro Palestine marches in recent years. As have even swastikas.

I am very much anti what the Israeli state is doing in Palestine.
But that doesn't mean I condone the use of Nazi salutes and swastika.

Ironic that there were masked men both carrying Israeli flags while others were doing a Nazi salute. What has the world come to at all.

But, that said, I don’t think you can or should arrest people for gestures alone. It seems a bit vague, there is the potential for wrongful arrest. Also it wouldn’t actually change the feelings of that person, it would just be displayed in a different way.

Don't try it in Germany. It's illegal there for fairly obvious reasons.

I stand corrected, it’s illegal in multiple European countries under hate crime laws. I originally believed it was only heavily frowned upon in Germany.

Please, please go and educate yourself properly regarding the Holocaust. I despise the Israeli state and I'm so disappointed and disgusted that so many Israelis have become the perpetrators of genocide themselves. Nevertheless, the Holocaust is probably one of the darkest periods of global history. If you ever have the opportunity, do visit a concentration camp. If not watch some documentaries, at the very least read some Wikipedia articles. You can loathe Zionism and the Israeli state, but sympathising with Nazis is never the answer. It's an ideology that leads to death and destruction, even for its most ardent supporters.

I used to live in Germany where the salute is illegal, as it is in many countries. I had not realised it was not illegal here. I am very shocked that it is taken so lightly when clearly done with intent to intimidate.

I feel like there was a time when Holocaust denial would be an instant banning offense on MN. But not anymore.

There was a time when racism in general was widely considered to be socially unacceptable in the UK. But not any more.
