Which council areas do 1/2 day finish on Friday?

Thinking of moving for work, and trying to weigh up pro's and con's.

I know some councils (Edinburgh, East/West Lothian) do 1/2 day Fridays - but is that all? Are there others?

I will need childcare so it's an important factor.

Perth & Kinross.

RoséProsecco · 26/02/2024 20:08

Thanks, hadn't realised that.

I'd thought maybe Borders too?

Highlands

North lanarkshire secondary schools finish at 12.30pm on Fridays but have various activities and clubs that you can attend voluntarily on a Friday afternoon

Crooklodge · 26/02/2024 20:11

Borders do.

craigth162 · 26/02/2024 20:12

Falkirk are apparently considering it

pictoosh · 26/02/2024 20:15

Midlothian do half day Friday too.

Fife but not all schools

RoséProsecco · 26/02/2024 20:21

Oh gosh, there don't seem to be many in the East/Central belt who aren't off.

Angus but secondary only.

DinnaeFashYersel · 26/02/2024 20:33

Once at high school not that many use childcare anymore.

You will struggle to find any.

BigBoysDontCry · 26/02/2024 21:29

Stirling don't.

RoséProsecco · 26/02/2024 22:43

Thanks for all the responses, so helpful

Only one school that I know of in Perth and Kinross are off on Friday afternoons - Kinross High School. The Perth secondary (and all P and K primary) schools are in school all day on Fridays.

Tintackedsea · 27/02/2024 00:21

Moray
An t-Eileannan Siar

(Secondary not primary)

Wbeezer · 27/02/2024 05:29

@boobashka guess which school my kids went to, I just assumed it was a county wide policy like the two weeks October break.

boobashka · 27/02/2024 07:21

@Wbeezer 😁 I did wonder if that might be the case 😉

RoséProsecco · 27/02/2024 07:31

I'm so surprised that there's variation even within councils. - I thought all schools within a council area would follow the same pattern.

Falkirk have been considering it but it seems to be off the table again for this year at least.

Callisto1 · 27/02/2024 17:13

I think all schools have to provide a certain amount of teaching, but from what I can see they have quite a bit of freedom how they structure their breaks. I certainly know of schools shortening the day by 15 min or reducing the Friday by nearly 1 hr. Often without much notice.

RaraRachael · 27/02/2024 20:25

It's only secondaries in Moray that do this, primaries don't.

Brenna24 · 27/02/2024 20:27

Fife for secondary schools. Primary schools do the full day.

Groovee · 27/02/2024 21:25

My Dd teaches in Fife in a Primary. Her class are in 9-3 every day. However my school in Edinburgh is in 8.50 to 2.40 for P1/2 and 3.10 for P3-7. I'm not sure of Friday's hours as I'm rarely in on a Friday.

I think P1/2 need to be taught for 22.5 hours a week and 5)3 rest for 25 hours a week. So her school have an hour for lunch but we only get about 40 minutes for lunch. Hence why Edinburgh can do a half day. It was initially brought in for teacher training and that's when courses used to run before covid.

Years ago a school I worked in gave children 1hr 15 minutes for lunch and it was a struggle to get children to come back in to class and settle for the afternoon.
