Hi. I've just been quoted £45 per hour for a minimum 2 hour weekly lesson. It seems frightening! And more at weekends. Is this usual?

OP posts:
KnittingNeedles · 10/04/2023 17:34

We pay £32.50 in suburban Glasgow, if you book 10 in a block. Single lessons are £35.

liveforsummer · 10/04/2023 17:34

It was 30 odd £ in the mid 90's so sounds about right 😬

FrenchandSaunders · 10/04/2023 17:34

Blimey £36 an hour in London.

OwlMother · 10/04/2023 19:37

We are currently paying £40 an hour in Edinburgh. No minimum number of hours. DS has an hour a week at a fixed time, more now he's on holidays/ exam leave.

Tig33 · 10/04/2023 21:35

The instructor I was recommended is £47.50 per hour lesson or block of 10 for £450.

my son is not even keen to learn and we live in Edinburgh within walking distance of most things he needs to get to plus free bus pass so I am reconsidering if it it worth it. I thought it would be best to get it done now but maybe not

Sylvaniandysfunctionalfamily · 11/04/2023 17:27

We psy £75 per two hours (Cotswolds) which is the going rate. Sorry, learning to drive is expensive!

Sylvaniandysfunctionalfamily · 11/04/2023 17:28

Oops just realised OP said £45 per hour - yes that is a lot!

Georgie8 · 11/04/2023 17:31

Same here in the Home Counties -only offered 2 hour lessons at £90 i.e. £45 ph

NameChange647 · 11/04/2023 17:35

I'm so glad I passed my test when I did. I passed a month before lockdown and it was £27 an hour. Now in my area it's around £40 there's no way I could have afforded this.

gkd1234 · 11/04/2023 17:38

Mine is £28/hr (London)

WeAllHaveWings · 11/04/2023 17:42

That is horrendous. We were £25/hour, passed Dec 2021. Saturday morning (Ayrshire) - booked/paid for as single lessons, no block booking required. They were flexible to do 1hour or 90mins lessons. They advised against 2hr lessons as thought concentration wandered / learning was not as effective. Almost the full time we spent driving and he drove from the house on the second lesson.

He did approx 25 lessons before he passed.

TommytheSquirrell · 11/04/2023 17:50

Passed my test in Edinburgh 3 months ago and yes seems average. Cost £38 an hour (with a discount as driving instructor was family friend). So expensive was nearly unaffordable but had to do it for work.

mdh2020 · 11/04/2023 17:56

Think of the cost of petrol and car insurance. Driving instructors have to pay to study to become instructors and pay to take the Advanced Motoring Test. DD was an instructor so please also remember they have gaps between lessons when they are driving to pick up the next student. Cars also have to be maintained in tip top condition,

TheChosenTwo · 11/04/2023 17:59

SE (not London, Surrey), £45 per hour but block booking 10 makes it £40 per hour, dd2 passed last year and we spent so much money on lessons while she was waiting for her test which was months and months because of the Covid delays, she didn’t even need the lessons really! She passed and now dd2 is having lessons, she has one double lesson a week so it’s costing £80 a week and we are now in the same predicament, she’s ready to take a test but can’t get one until about September!

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 11/04/2023 17:59

My DH charges £34 ph in Kent, and only does 2hr blocks - tbf I think that's the norm. DH says that if lessons were just the hour, after travelling to collect the pupil, adjusting the seat/mirrors, admin etc there wouldn't be that much time for driving which isn't fair.

PoBaFla · 11/04/2023 18:06

East central Scotland. Instructor does 1.5 hr lesson for £57 or 2 hr for £76

Buzzer3555 · 11/04/2023 18:15

£38 per hour in huddersfield. I thought it was expensive but reading this thread has put it into perspective

2chocolateoranges · 11/04/2023 18:36

Did passed last year and her lessons were £27 or £245 for a block of 10.
we live near near Glasgow. However that was cheaper than other instructors her friends had.

ohfibonacci · 12/04/2023 02:25

That’s expensive for Edinburgh. I’d look again

How is it “cheap” when it’s £5 per hour more than the price where you are?

Thoughtful2355 · 12/04/2023 07:43

Glitterbiscuits · 12/04/2023 07:44
