So only about 2 months til the final exams so starting a thread to discuss revision, exams etc.

Have any schools released details of easter revision classes yet? I've heard nothing from our school and don't know if they are doing any. If they aren't, I might look at what else is on offer over easter.

So sorry to hear this.

You need to find out how far off an A grade she is with each of her subjects and if it's just a few marks, ask for a remark for each subject that is close to the grade boundary.

My elder son went up from a B grade to an A grade in Mods following an appeal the year before Covid, so it is possible. They didn't remark the paper, just checked the marking was inline with national standards.

Good luck!!!!🤞

Would pharmacy at Robert Gordon in Aberdeen be an option? Possibly less competitive than Strathclyde and maybe more likely to accept a college HN pathway if that was needed. Might be worth a phone call to their student advice service.

cantmovewont · 08/08/2023 20:47

Thank you both. We were hoping she could stay at home but you're right.
I'll wait to find out her bands and decide on appeal before that move. She's studying AH in Maths, Chemistry and Biology this year. Might have to have a rethink

Please don't worry, it will all work out fine in the end for your DD. Seek advice from school and they will be able to help. This must be something that happens a lot each year.

It might be a remark will be enough to get the As necessary to study pharmacy at Strathclyde university.

cantmovewont · 08/08/2023 21:12

That's such kind words, thank you. You are all so reassuring. I'll let you know what happens

sassanach · 08/08/2023 21:16

@cantmovewont I've just had a look at the planitplus.net website which you may also find useful - you can search courses at the top and refine by region, qualification, full or part time etc.

There's only 2 pharmacy courses, but quite a few pharmacology ones, not sure if this could be an alternative option for her?

Also, could she qualify for widening access entry, depending on where you live? If I'm reading the Strathclyde Pharmacy entry requirments correctly, then with her current grades and AHs she could still meet the widening access requirements.

Why not call my colleagues on the exam results helpline tomorrow and they can talk it through further?

sassanach · 08/08/2023 21:18

ps if it says site not found, just click on the 'planit' button and it will work!

Honestly just try and remember the bigger picture. When you (and dc) are in the thick of it it's easy to feel it's all consuming but I have friends who didn't do that brilliantly (nothing like as good as your Dd!) who now have fab jobs after going to a second / third choice Uni.

MistressIggi · 08/08/2023 21:36

Cases such as your dd will be a priority for appeals, where a place depends on it. Did you get the appeal guidance booklet?

user143777534 · 08/08/2023 22:02

@cantmovewont you’ve had some great advice. I just wanted to add a hug.

Hi. We were expecting mostly As at Higher. Predicted. Straight As though out the year. BBBBB. She won't be able to study pharmacy as she needs AAABB and 2 AH BB. She's devastated. Straight As at National 5. Just can't understand where' she's gone wrong. She has no life. All she does is study.
Not sure of next course of action. Anyone with any advice about any other pathways without having to repeat a year at school?

Sorry to hear this x easy for me to say and I know my child would be devastated too in the circs but there will be a pathway for her - speak to the school and take it from there.

cantmovewont · 08/08/2023 22:32

Thank you all. Sincerely. There IS a bigger picture and as I keep telling her, one day it will be a distant memory, and a necessary part of her journey - as we all learn at some point or another.
It's a long wait until next weeks return to school, but I'll arm myself in the meantime.
We're East Ren so I doubt wider access will apply to us, nonetheless, I'll check it out!
And so to sleep...end of a sad day. Cheerio!

Many many congratulations to your dear children who have got what they needed, or are delighted with their results, it's
been a tough time for them all!

Me too! Those are brilliant results! Hopefully you can get some solid advice or appeals that will keep your DD pharmacy hopes alive. I've heard how competitive that course is!

The priority appeals deadline, according to the SQA booklet, is Tues 15th. So don't wait till your dd is back at school in this case. Contact the school on the inset days (I'm assuming that's what they start with next week).

Rae36 · 08/08/2023 23:51

Am I the only parent still waiting? Ds2 didn't sign up for text results and has been away on a camping trip with pals. He's now decided to stay at his friend's house tonight and come home tomorrow. So his envelope is still sitting on the table waiting for him.

user143777534 · 09/08/2023 00:04

@Rae36 have you not been tempted to steam the envelope open? 😁

I don’t want know how you are managing.

Rae36 · 09/08/2023 00:17

No I haven't done that. I'm beginning to wonder now though if he did sign up for the text and had his results already. He is incredibly laid back though, its equally possible that he's just decided to wait till tomorrow and stay another night with his friends.
If he's not home by 10am tomorrow (today now I suppose) I'm opening it. I've told him as much

gawditswindy · 09/08/2023 07:13

Priority appeals are for those who have applications in for THIS YEAR. So those who are due to go in September, not those who are applying for next year.

Aurea · 09/08/2023 08:00

Robert Gordon Uni have places in clearing in pharmacy for this year.

Even if she's not considering going this year, could it be worth calling them to gauge their reaction on her results?

Hope things feel better this morning.x

SORRY numpty moment. I obviously meant Maths at B! A friend's husband sat his PGDE just 3 years ago and had to do Maths as a condition of entry to upgrade his old Standard Grade.

Yup this is the case for someone I know too who went back to uni as a mature student in her 40s to to a Postgrad Cert in teaching. Degree, masters, oodles of work experience. But not the pass in maths. She had to go back and do her Nat 5 (and get a B) before they'd even look at her application.

It's completely non-negotiable for any teaching job, whether it's Primary, PE teacher, Art. Of course if you've a Nat 5 at C and have then gone on to do Higher Maths (and passed it) that's a different matter.

KingCatMeowInSpace · 09/08/2023 08:51

Morning- Robert Gordon Uni are asking for 1 A and 3 B’s for Pharmacy and your daughter has 5 B’s which is very similar PLUS she’d have further qualifications from S6 by the time she applies. It sounds like grades-wise she’d definitely have a fair chance of being accepted.

No advice but how awful for her. I mean 5 B's is amazing. She must be absolutely gutted.
I'm fearing I will be in a similar situation with my dd next year. She has 2A's and 3B's but requires 5 A's at higher or a combination of Advanced higher to get her into Italian and Linguistics at Glasgow Uni. Its so unfair because she has the qualifications for Edinburgh as they are asking for less. I find that super annoying. She doesn't want to go and study in Edinburgh. She wants to study at home.

neveradullmoment99 · 09/08/2023 09:14

Should say she is in sixth year this year so still has a chance as she is studying A-levels but it really puts the pressure on her this year.

neveradullmoment99 · 09/08/2023 09:15

Sorry advanced highters not a-levels.

Rae36 · 09/08/2023 10:23

My nat5 ds finally arrived home at 9.45am and got 2 Bs and 5 Cs at Nat5. I'm disappointed with him, he's disappointed with himself. He could have done better than that. (I haven't said I'm disappointed obviously)
Off to school tomorrow for a meeting with guidance staff to see if he'll be allowed on the Higher courses he wants with just Cs.
