Empty shelves

Apologies if this has been covered but what's with the empty shelves in shops and the 'apologies we're trying to sort our stock levels as quickly as we can' posters. Is this brexit related or something else?

@HirplesWithHaggis

The Road Haulage Association are warning of total collapse within the next couple of weeks. It's a combination of everything already mentioned, but mostly Brexit imo.
Can well believe it.

I've read a few posts about this on social media but haven't really seen any evidence of it. I tend to shop in an evening or weekend, although I've been at lunchtime the last couple of weeks and got everything I needed and not noticed any entirely empty sections.
I do think the fresh produce has a shorter BB4 date on it recently, i've struggled to get things to last the week regardless of when I go shopping.

Gtfcovid · 08/08/2021 07:30

I’ve really struggled to get my usual dog food and had to go to 4 different shops to get bonios yesterday - I got the last 3 boxes in home bargains. I wasn’t needing it but lidl were out of toilet roll. Haven’t been able to get wraps in lidl for months. I don’t know if they’ve just stopped stocking them but that would be a bit odd.

NotSoLongGoodbye · 08/08/2021 16:33

We had problems with raspberries for weeks ... not available or dreadful quality, then bottled water. DS special lacto free fresh milk has now disappeared from Tesco (but thankfully not Waitrose)

riverrunning · 08/08/2021 17:30

Struggling to believe it - delivery Saturday night, nothing out of the ordinary in substations, certainly nothing like the first lockdown panic buying...

countrygirl99 · 08/08/2021 17:46

It was really serious yesterday. This was the wind shelf. Beer was actually worse.

Not been able to get adult dry cat food for a week now in Lidl Sad. Fortunately I already had a few bags - but next time that they have some on I'll be buying as many bags as I can Shock We have two cats and we go brought over a bag a week.

I buy mine online as cat likes variety. We now buy smaller sample bags and she has about 5 on rotation at any one time, they do some good deals though and saves worrying about what is in store.

Had a few substitutes with this weeks click and collect but nothing drastic, different ice-lollies, yogurts and different pack of cold meat. It's usually the stuff they have on offer or where I'm getting extra points that can't be supplied so presume it's just because of that. That happens regularly anyway.

LizzieMacQueen · 08/08/2021 18:45

@countrygirl99 Love the idea of an empty wind shelf !!

For me it was no beef mince, well not the 5% pack I prefer. Just the kickstart needed to ditch the mince for something else.

I have a vet friend. She said 'if you think things are bad this week just wait ....'

Do you all know about the petrol change coming in September?

ElephantOfRisk · 08/08/2021 19:00

Do you all know about the petrol change coming in September?

The move to E10? I checked and our cars will be fine with this as will most peoples but definitely worth checking.

Ladylunchalot · 08/08/2021 20:33

Just back from my big Tesco and lots of empty shelves. Virtually no strawberries or raspberries, very low on milk. Not much bread, virtually no fizzy drinks, hardly any flavoured water only Volvic, very low on toilet rolls. Freezer section was pretty much empty! Haven't seen a store as bad since before the first lock down.

ElephantOfRisk · 08/08/2021 20:40

To be fair, I've always found a Sunday night pretty poor in our huge Sainsburys, well I did when i regularly went into the shops.

ElephantOfRisk · 08/08/2021 20:40

Might now be an element of panic buying on top of actual supply issues.

Ladylunchalot · 08/08/2021 20:46

I tend to go on a Sunday night and it's normally fine even during lock down last year, just seemed really bare tonight even compared to last Sunday night. Glad it's over for another week Grin

riverrunning · 08/08/2021 20:46

Bound to be some panic buying given all the news reports today. I agree Sunday and Monday/Tuesday I always try and avoid a big shop as they're key low stock and restocking days.

prettybird · 08/08/2021 20:47

@ElephantOfRisk - our pair only ever get the Coshida dry food and the very occasional little tin of pate. They seem to thole it Grin not that they have a choice Wink and have nice sleek fur. But maybe that's why they bring in so many birds and mice Grin

Fortunately I make my own sourdough bread: half way through one 10kg sack and another 10kg sack in the attic (buy 2x10kg sacks at a time to reduce the postage costs).

StarryEyeSurprise · 08/08/2021 20:57

Just read that 2,000 HGV qualified members of the army will be used to help counteract the driver issues caused by Brexit.

HirplesWithHaggis · 09/08/2021 00:50

We're only short 100,000 drivers.

StarryEyeSurprise · 09/08/2021 07:37

Yeah, it'll be like a drop in the ocean (!)

Farevalah · 09/08/2021 08:16

Has anyone else noticed fresh stuff going off much quicker than normal? Potatoes that start sprouting within 2 days, yet we'll before the BB date. Croissants (tesco) going mouldy the day after opening, fruit and milk going off really quickly too.

Some empty shelves in our local stores, hopefully just a temporary blip. I need to organise my autumn stock up on supplies!

florafoxtrot · 09/08/2021 09:10

Bloody hell Shock

Definitely feel like there are shorter dates on things.

Iluvfriends · 09/08/2021 09:16

Shortage of bottled water at Tesco and Co-op.......due to shortage of pickers and drivers according to staff in Co-op.

blairresignationjam · 09/08/2021 09:31

I've had two bottles of milk go completely off, well before their used by date in my last two deliveries - thought my fridge was broken! Also all the fruit and veg is turning so much faster. It's almost a waste of time getting a weekly shop delivered because I can't rely on it to last.

ElephantOfRisk · 09/08/2021 09:44

I had raspberries I went to use yesterday, dated today but they were just mush in the tray, had to just stick them straight into yogurt. Unwashed, as how can you wash those? Probably caught covid again now... 😜

liveforsummer · 09/08/2021 09:49

The coop/scotmid seems to be particularly affected. Perhaps as the stores are smaller and they hold less in storage so they are affected more quickly. From what I've read it's a mix of brexit and covid but mostly brexit. Too much hassle for many EU drivers
