I've only just noticed the existence of this new political party. Does anyone have a view? I've had a quick look at what they're saying about education, and it seems sensible?

The biggest influence on academic attainment is parental support

This x 1000

@LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett, amen No. 2.
I just pray that in Scotland there are enough shy voters (just like in the 2015 election or in the states) capable of subverting polls. If anything because I couldn't cope with n more years of turmoil (and if schools down and even deeper drain).

@prettybird, (undoubtedly) lucky you. I wish I had a similar experience.

Scotslassie1 · 16/11/2020 20:34

Arkadia I've taught in Prettybird's ds' school (shock, horror from you I'm sure) and the brightest are challenged very well whilst those who need it are given a whole range of support also (e.g. there were several refugees when I was there) . The CfE is used in the school to provide pupils with breadth, depth and progression in their learning. I'm sorry your personal experience doesn't match this but it doesn't mean all or even most schools are poor.
Is education all unicorns and rainbows? No. But it certainly doesn't warrant even considering voting for the party mentioned by the OP.

Greektome · 16/11/2020 22:53

Of course, education isn't the only issue with the SNP. If you're worried about oppressive government, take a look at the Hate Crimes Bill.

See I could understand the interest in Education but as Lucas has only really taught at Merchiston Castle, an exclusive boys school in Edinburgh which does not follow the CfE then I can't see how he has a measured point on Education under CfE.

Scotslassie1 · 17/11/2020 19:59

The nutter was a teacher in a private school?

Groovee · 17/11/2020 20:25

Yup!

Groovee · 17/11/2020 20:26

And a failed UKIP candidate a few years ago in my area which was what brought him back to our attention.

Scotslassie1 · 17/11/2020 20:37

Quite a scary thought that the a racist, far right
insert sweary word was in the privileged position of teaching others.

The fact he's UKIP makes perfect sense. You can wrap a turd in a shiniest, most beautiful bow (Scottish Family Party) but it'll still be a turd.

Scotslassie1 · 17/11/2020 20:39

*the shiniest It's been a long day!

Groovee · 03/04/2021 17:43

Ooh @Scotslassie1 Lucas is standing in the Edinburgh Pentlands. Was checking out the candidates and he's attempting another go.

FeistySheep · 06/04/2021 12:45

He randomly stood in my constituency (Ross, Skye, Lochaber) in 2019 WM elections - despite living in Edinburgh! Maybe he thought he'd have more luck in the Highlands.... er, no.

He got 268 votes, presumably from people who hadn't read what he really stood for. It pleased me that he wouldn't get his £500 deposit back Grin

Heres what they say on their website about equality (presumably they only consider sexual equality worthy of mention).

"much contemporary ‘gender equality’ campaigning in Scotland is misguided.

Men and women, on average, tend to have different priorities and interests. This diversity is positive and creative, not a problem to eliminate. We do not want to squeeze the sexes into uniformity, but to support men and women as they fulfil their own vision for their lives.

Gender imbalances in many areas of study and lines of work are not a problem to solve, but a natural manifestation of men and women freely following their own inclinations and ambitions.

Compared to women, men tend to work longer hours, are more willing to sacrifice job security for career advancement, do more dangerous jobs, and take fewer career breaks. Women often want to devote themselves more to family life. The “Gender Pay Gap” is by and large a reflection of the natural differences between men and women, and no government action is required to address it.

We do not support gender quotas in business, education or politics and would seek to repeal legislation that already discriminates in this way.

So-called “equal pay” claims, where women claim to have been underpaid for doing different work than men are unjust. Councils should not have to dissipate their limited resources following these unjust claims. Similarly, businesses should be secure from such opportunistic attacks.

We would cut taxpayer funding for campaigning groups such as Engender, Close the Gap and Equate."

That should go down well, considering that much of Scotland's legal profession is now female dominated, and there a number of leading female Scottish QCs.

It seems quite likely that, if the Hate Crime bill were to actually bother including the final protected category of sex within its ambit, that the above words could be reported to the police as a hate crime should it pass into legislation in its current form.

GreenlandTheMovie · 06/04/2021 13:55

Oh and I just noticed this other little bizarre snippet:

"Men and women should be equal before the law. The Scottish Government’s policy of special treatment for female offenders must end."

There is a belief amongst some men that women receive less severe sentences for crimes, which ignores the truth. Women tend to be jailed for less severe crimes involving non-payment of things like council tax, men tend to get away with serious crimes of violence more leniently. Its a very insidious belief that does quite a lot of harm in society.

Groovee · 06/04/2021 17:01

He stood for UKIP in Edinburgh West a few years ago.

I think he has sons. I wonder if he'd be so against equality for women if he had a daughter or would he expect her to be barefoot, pregnant and chained to the kitchen sink.
