Things to do in a wet summer holiday

Rainforevermore · 29/07/2019 10:07

So, looks like it's just going to rain for the last couple of weeks of the holiday.
Have done cinema, soft play, trampolining - dcs are alternately bored/happy to be playing on xboxes but I am stir crazy and want to get out of the house! Any have suggestions of how to pass the time? We are in a city but it's all so dear...
Maybe should just suit them up and go out in the rain.

Ricekrispie22 · 29/07/2019 10:11

How old are your dc? And what city?

Rainforevermore · 29/07/2019 10:13

12 and 7 - an awkward gap, but I can divide them up if need be. Edinburgh.
I had plans for camping, walks, lazy days in the garden.. why won't the rain stop???!

OP posts:
Mrsjayy · 29/07/2019 10:16

Where do you live i used to keep museums till rainy days most of them are free I know it might seem a bit dull but the Dc enjoyed it once we eere there we would do Kelvingrove and transport museum one day and maybe go to Edinburgh another day.

Mrsjayy · 29/07/2019 10:17

Would they not like Camera obscurea ?

Rainforevermore · 29/07/2019 10:21

In many years here I've never actually been to Camera Obscura, I'll look it up Smile
Museum not a bad idea. Longish bus journey but that kills some time! I know they'd like Dynamic Earth but it's over £50.. Have already had quite a few "big" days out. Oh for the days when they'd be over the moon at a local softplay!
I'm just in a grump as we had plans to go to Fort Douglas (open air park) today (have groupon vouchers) and it's due to rain all afternoon again

OP posts:
drspouse · 29/07/2019 10:25

Train out to the coast and welly walk on the beach? With bribe promise of hot chocolate (or ice cream)?

Mrsjayy · 29/07/2019 10:27

Museum of Scotland is great and a fiver suggested donation . Dynamic earth is dear for what it is, I remember when mine were school age and you get so fed up trying to amuse them.

QueenMabby · 29/07/2019 10:30

I second the camera obscura. We went on a visit to Edinburgh this year and my two (13 and 10 loved it). Also Dynamic Earth. It is expensive but I think you can come back for the rest of the year? Don’t quote me on that though - may cost a small top up but worth investigating? Again, my two loved it.

Rainforevermore · 29/07/2019 10:31

Actually reading your suggestions clarifies for me it's the older one that's the issue, I can already hear his sighs if the word "walk" is used, younger one will just go along with stuff. Last night forecast said this afternoon would be dry, this morning it says it will be wet. I'm guessing summer will come once the Scottish schools all go back!!
Thank you for all the ideas, I'm writing them down Smile

Mrsjayy · 29/07/2019 10:43

12 year olds are pre programmed totut and sigh justbundle them out the door Grin

WaxOnFeckOff · 29/07/2019 10:44

Swimming? Do some history stuff like greyfriars Bobby and then go see the statue and graveyard. Do a Harry Potter type tour (make up your own using Edinburgh sites). National story telling centre, go into stuff at the festival, free shows or street theatre where you give what you can afford. Library might have stuff on. Have a clear out for charity. Get a day ticket for the buses and just ride about seeing areas you've never been. Beach in the rain? Have a hunt round for loose change and take it to the funfair at porty (if its still there?) look up recipes on you tube and do some cooking or baking.

Rainforevermore · 29/07/2019 11:05

Ah Waxon I'm tired just reading that but you are right, there's loads to do if I put the effort in! I think will go to a park now as it is unbelievably not raining and then bake in the afternoon. They even fight when baking though over who gets to do what. Dh's idea is to read a book and ignore them Hmm
MrsJayy you have met my son!

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 29/07/2019 11:17

I grew up in Edinburgh OP with no money. We mainly just spent all our time in parks or the woods by ourselves all day, but the museums were free and swimming was 5p for as long as you wanted. We'd walk miles to go, also meant we got clean at the pool too! However, staying in wasn't really an option as no decent TV and no computers or consoles. Different times to know though and I still remember times being bored. My parents worked though so we just did our own thing. Enjoy your afternoonSmile

BeckyWithTheSplitEnds · 29/07/2019 12:43

There must be some online site which encompasses everything - up here in Perth we've got "Small City Big Personality" which has ideas in abundance of stuff to do. Edinburgh must have the same.

I sympathise greatly though - "rainy days" so often involve being inside somewhere paid. I've promised a trip to Hobbycraft the next rainy day... ching ching. :(

WickedGoodDoge · 29/07/2019 18:09

Ratho clip and climb?

Rainforevermore · 29/07/2019 20:51

Thank you all. In the end we went to a park we don't usually go to - with a scooter bit - and got home before the rain. Took ds1 to the gym with me, and now watching telly with dc2. So, survived another day and spent under a fiver!

I know, waxonfeckoff I think a trip to the library was a big event in my own childhood summer holidays!

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 29/07/2019 21:08

To be fair, we spent more time looking for the flasher in the gully than in the library... Grin

Glad you had a good day, another one done.

We also used to take bits of cardboard up the hills and slide down on them hoping not to end up in a gorse bush.

Rainforevermore · 29/07/2019 21:50

Haha! I'm sending them up Corstorphine hill tomorrow with a couple of amazon boxes!

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 29/07/2019 22:42

They could spend the morning decorating them like go karts :)

we weren't that sophisticated. I used to worry about ending up in blackford pond.

If you are near corstorphine, would the ice-skating be on?

susiewong · 29/07/2019 22:52

Mine practically live up corstorphine hill just now. The tree swing is a favourite and they oddly love the walled garden. Not sure why but it's a beautiful place to walk around and find little interesting bits like the frog pond.

What about cramond (scooters/skateboards), lauriston castle, gorgie farm, cinema (though it's expensive), bus ride into town to see the street performers who I think may have started up or catch some of the free kids shows at the three sisters next week (if it's on), saughton park is good, up to the meadows parks, oh the modern art galleries as I'm sure they're running stuff about collage, the library local to me has loads of stuff on through the week for all ages on their Facebook page - all free.

I write all this while managing to do sweet fa most days Blush

dontfluffthefluffer · 30/07/2019 00:39

Oh and the kelpies, you can park for cheap/free further away from the main car park and they have a brilliant play area and splash park area which is good fun even in the rain. Just take towels ;)

Mrsjayy · 30/07/2019 09:13

Nothing to do with days out the Kelpies terrify me especially if you drive past at night Shock

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/07/2019 09:20

Mrsjjay, I was always terrified of the statue of Wellington at the east end of prince's Street. Still gives me the shudders even now tbh.
