Just thought I'd start a wee thread for those with DC applying for uni for next year (or indeed applying for themselves) in ase anyone was up for sharing knowledge/support/venting etc.

I have DS1 applying for this year. Still doesn't know where to or what for Confused.

Not done any open days yet and lots now clashing so can't do them all. He wont go alone and wont ask anything or tell us anything about it if he did, so looks like it might be family days out for the next month or so. Dragging DS2 with us as he is currently doing Highers and given his poor Nat 5 results, he needs some motivation to pull his finger out if he wants to go to Uni.

How is everyone else getting on?

Finally...

Dd got a conditional to Dundee a few days ago but no email and it was by chance she looked on her UCAS track and saw it. Luckily her dad was off today and took her hysterical phone call. He's then told everyone but me. So I got all these texts saying they were delighted from people but I had no idea what!?🤦🏻‍♀️

wigglybeezer · 22/03/2018 12:35

prettybird The son of a good friend plays for Aberdeen Uni second team and really enjoys his rugby, however he shared the full horror of the rugby initiation ritual with us, enough to turn a mother's hair white!

Another good friend did the Politics and IR degree at Aberdeen 30 odd years ago and loved it, started off as a Modern Studies teacher but branched out into all sorts of interesting areas later.

WaxOnFeckOff · 22/03/2018 12:50

Great news Groovee . I take it she is confident about meeting the conditions?

HappyAxolotyl · 22/03/2018 13:11

Hi folks; usually a lurker but have got myself into a bit of a panic. Just been having a wee look on SAAS site and it says applications close on 31st March. That can’t be right, can it?
My ds has the laid back, non-urgent gene (obviously not from me!)
Have you all applied for funding already?

WaxOnFeckOff · 22/03/2018 13:20

Welcome Happy. I have no clue! Does that mean funding for tuition or loans? We haven't done anything either but as DS has decided to travel, we are paying for his travel and he needs to get a job for beer money. So other than fees I don't think we are looking to get anything further.

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 22/03/2018 13:26

from the website: You must apply, even if you only want us to pay your tuition fees to your college or
university and do not intend to apply for a bursary or a loan. We will not pay your tuition
fees to your college or university unless you apply to us.

That's our evening sorted then! :(

OP posts:
HappyAxolotyl · 22/03/2018 13:26

Both, I think!? Do we not have to register with SAAS so that the government know to pay the fees to the university?

WaxOnFeckOff · 22/03/2018 13:27

It also says:

You can apply for your funding from mid-April each year.
 You should submit a correctly filled-in application for funding and provide any relevant
supporting documentation on or before 30 June 2017 to have your funding in place at
the start of your course.

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 22/03/2018 13:28

But the front page says:

First application
The Information we need section explains what information you, your parents or your spouse, civil partner or partner have to send to us. If you do not follow the advice given in this page your application may be incomplete and your funding could be delayed.

The Hints and tips area provides you with all of the information required to ensure that your application is submitted correctly at the first attempt. Following the advice in this page will ensure that your funding is ready for the start of your course.

The Apply option allows you to start your application for funding.

The final closing date for applications is 31 March 2018. Confused

Surely there is a typo somewhere?

OP posts:
HappyAxolotyl · 22/03/2018 13:29

Surely not everyone will have all their offers in before the deadline of March 31st? ( ds is still waiting to hear from Strathclyde.)

WaxOnFeckOff · 22/03/2018 13:29

hopefully someone who knows for sure will be along soon....

I think that 31 March must be a typo.

OP posts:
HappyAxolotyl · 22/03/2018 13:30

Sorry, cross-post again! It is confusing!

celtiethree · 22/03/2018 13:31

Posting late as well as Happy's post made me panic! I think the March 31st deadline is for 2017/2018! I have a note in my diary that SAAS opens for 2018/2019 on the 3rd of April.

WaxOnFeckOff · 22/03/2018 13:31

Yes, that's why I think it must be a typo. DS has all his offers but hasn't decided and that the case with many on here, some still waiting, some still deciding. I can see that maybe you need to get on a get registered and maybe apply in principle but surely until youve firmed your offer you are just wasting time as they still wont know where the money is to go and they must have overal stats of how many students have applied/been offered in terms of budgeting?

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 22/03/2018 13:33

that makes more sense celtie because it does refer to mid April for opeing of applications. Wheewww!!

OP posts:
HappyAxolotyl · 22/03/2018 13:37

Phew!
31st March this year is a bit late to be applying for a course that started last year?
Anyway, thanks for that; I couldn’t see any mention of April date when I looked.

celtiethree · 22/03/2018 13:42

it's not a great website!! I have the date in my diary after DC1 went to an Aberdeen event in Glasgow with his dad and they came back armed with the April date!

prettybird · 22/03/2018 13:44

Nettleskeins - has your ds heard anything yet? A friend's ds got an unconditional for Music at Glasgow but he'd prefer to go to Aberdeen (although his parents would prefer he stayed in Glasgow Confused)

Wigglybeezer - mentioned your comment about rugby initiation rites to dh. It's probably just as well we are only "virtual" and anonymous friends, as he would like report it to the SRU! Hmm We're trying to stamp out things like that at our local rugby club although the first team coach probably needs to go to really address the culture Hmm

Groovee · 22/03/2018 13:44

She should do as they want 1 B and she's predicted 2A's 1B. So unless something goes drastically wrong.

I'll get her on to SAAS.

WaxOnFeckOff · 22/03/2018 13:46

It is late but maybe that's more for the "loan" rather than the fees, so maybe someone who didn't initally borrow as much as they could and would like more for the last term or someone who's parent has become a single parent during the year so is now entitled to borrow more etc. I presume anyway.

OP posts:
HappyAxolotyl · 22/03/2018 13:48

Ah, I see. That makes sense now.
Sorry if my flapping made anyone else panic.
Thank you.

WaxOnFeckOff · 22/03/2018 13:50

I live very close to a uni and the rugby grounds for the local team. One year saw the entire University rugby team jogging past as I was driving home, or should that be the rugby team in their entirety....Blush Shock Grin. In their defense, it was a very cold night so I saw less than I might have done.

Tat sounds good then Groovee :)

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 22/03/2018 13:52

a ha Happy it's good to get the adreniline rusing every now and then!

Good luck for the stratclyde offer, what is it your DS is wanting to do and is that the one he is wanting/does he have other offers in?

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 22/03/2018 13:53

scuse the typos, my keyboard isn't liking "h" sometimes.

OP posts:
HappyAxolotyl · 22/03/2018 14:03

Haha Wax, good job one of us in this house has some adrenaline!
Ds has 3 unconditionals for engineering; hoping to firm Heriot Watt so not too bothered about Strathclyde. Rejection from Edinburgh but was never his first choice.
Has totally r e l a x e d though, about revision. Have been encouraging him to do his best despite the unconditionals!
