Just thought I'd start a wee thread for those with DC applying for uni for next year (or indeed applying for themselves) in ase anyone was up for sharing knowledge/support/venting etc.

I have DS1 applying for this year. Still doesn't know where to or what for Confused.

Not done any open days yet and lots now clashing so can't do them all. He wont go alone and wont ask anything or tell us anything about it if he did, so looks like it might be family days out for the next month or so. Dragging DS2 with us as he is currently doing Highers and given his poor Nat 5 results, he needs some motivation to pull his finger out if he wants to go to Uni.

How is everyone else getting on?

Hello, haven't updated for a while. DS has 4 unconditionals, Dundee was first to come in and then Stirling, both Politics, then his first choice of Aberdeen (P & IR), then Glasgow (P and History). Nothing from his final choice of St Andrews but it's almost certainly a rejection (he doesn't have a Higher in science or maths).

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to how and when unis offer, it's really frustrating. Hope your DCs all hear soon.

No offer day for my DS on Wed as we're in Aberdeen on Thursday anyway, he's hoping to be able to visit some accommodation then.

Sturmundcalm · 19/03/2018 19:01

there have been a few kids in DD's year who have definitely suffered from unconditionalitis - one of her friends actually left and then came back cause she couldn't get a job. think we've been kind of lucky in a way that DD has her international apps still outstanding (got 1 rejection just last week) as she does still seem to be pretty focused on school.

we're going to St Andrews the first week of the Easter holidays for an open day, although Strathclyde is still her first pick. and we are apparently the worst parents ever because when we suggested she could go by herself we were advised that EVERYBODY brings a parent to these events, and when she and a friend went to an Edinburgh Uni event in Glasgow they were the only ones there without a parent. Apparently at the end of that event the kids were told to give a round of applause to their parents for all their support... Grin Wine

Nettleskeins · 19/03/2018 19:02

Ds is still waiting for Glasgow (music) too. And the offer holders day is 27th March so they are running out of time! A pity because it is his first choice.

IndigoApple · 19/03/2018 19:24

We are also off to Aberdeen on Wednesday! Then Dundee in April. We saw the subject talk (Biomedical Sciences) at the open day in October so more interested in accomodation, studying abroad etc. Good excuse for a midweek day off work.

DD still making her mind up but threw a curveball at the weekend by saying she hadn't ruled out Strathclyde... I do think it's too close to home but trying to step back and let her decide.

Unconditionalitis not been too bad here but DD only doing 2 AH. She dropped the third and didn't let the unis who have made offers know Shock. The school wasn't too happy but I'm just glad she was willing to stay at school and not working full time in a shop as one of her friends is doing... so she has my support.

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/03/2018 19:35

DS definitely has something from Edinburgh but all my hints have fallen on deaf ears. He has an email from Edinburgh saying "action required" but he hasn't even opened it. He has apparently had a look at the courses and thinks he'd like to go to some offer days but can't remember which ones or which courses it was he preferred. Somebody please shoot me....

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/03/2018 20:17

Groovee :o

I don't even like Gin or even Brew and can't have Wine, Cake or even a Biscuit as currently on a diet. Don't think it's helping the mood tbh! :o

I inadvertently managed to splurge 175kcal on a half a tub of fucking vegetables because I didn't read the label properly (gimpy old aged eyesight) and now i don't enough allowance left for a bit of chocolate, only just enough for a blueberry ricecake :(

Very late to the party but my DD has applied to Glasgow School of Art (rejected), Edinburgh Art College (rejected for Fine Art MBA), Dundee DJCAD (portfolio submission session on the 30th) and she withdrew her application to Aberdeen. Still waiting to hear from Edinburgh for Art general but we feel it's going to be a rejection. Hate all this waiting Sad

IndigoApple · 19/03/2018 20:54

Wax how frustrating 😤. Do you have dates for the offer holder days so you can chivvy him along or will that make things worse?

Love the gin emoji.

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/03/2018 21:03

Yes frustrating indeed! he has all the invitations, I'm attempting to butt out. Just asked him if he has decided where and when he wants to go to (in terms of offer holder days) and the answer is "No", I said he won't need to worry about it soon as they will all be over...

I think he would have been happier if he's only had one offer tbh and that sounds a bit heartless to those with rejections but I don't mean it like that :(

That's a real shame Ginger what would be a fall back option? Is there an HND or access course she could go for and then transfer to the degree? Hopefully Dundee or Edinburgh come through for her though.

Groovee · 19/03/2018 21:04

I don't drink. But there's no Diet Pepsi emoji to get me through.

Feel for Dd not hearing back as she's done so many placements to get experience and is a peer educator for girl Guiding and does a fab job.

Superjaggy · 19/03/2018 21:24

.... and DS has just heard back from St Andrew's and it's a no, as expected.

But now he doesn't know if he wants to go to Aberdeen or Glasgow...

Did someone say gin?

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/03/2018 21:34

That's a shame superjaggy at least he has a clear choice to make now.
If DS1 has to take action in terms of Edinburgh (as per the email) then I'm presuming it's not a no? Would they interview for a tech type subject?

OP posts:
Sturmundcalm · 19/03/2018 21:43

My DH has just had an interview offer for primary teaching postgrad at glasgow - we had assumed they were just taking a long time to reject him!

Superjaggy · 19/03/2018 22:31

Wax are you sure he hasn't read it and is just enjoying the power of knowledge for a while?! (My DS did that when his offers from Abdn and Glasgow came in Confused).

Sturmund that's great for your DH - hope his interview goes well.

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/03/2018 22:34

Pretty sure. I even said to him "so that's you just waiting for Edinburgh and those jobs you've applied for then?" and he didn't even flinch and just said "yes". Confused email hasn't been opened but I have no way of knowing if he's checked UCAS.

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 19/03/2018 22:36

and yes, good look to your DH sturmund It's good to get a mix of male and female teachers in primary. A lot of DC don't have a decent male role model (girls and boys).

OP posts:
prettybird · 19/03/2018 22:42

If it's any consolation Superjaggy - one of ds' genius friends, who already has 5As (or is 6?) at Higher, one A at AH (sat all his Maths exams a year ahead of his class) and is doing 3 AHs this year (for which he will get As Wink) was rejected by St Andrews last week for (I think) Economics and Spanish Shock

Ds was outraged on his behalf - can't believe that St Andrews would be so "stupid" to quote him Grin

Superjaggy · 19/03/2018 22:49

Ah, it seems that St A's admissions policy is even more mysterious than the average uni. My DS is fine with the rejection, pretty, it seems to have concentrated his mind on going firm on his offer so he can start applying for accommodation.

prettybird · 19/03/2018 23:06

Sounds like your ds is very mature, Superjaggy Smile

The irony is that ds' friend's first choice was going to be Glasgow anyway Confused (for which he already has an unconditional).

prettybird · 20/03/2018 14:40

Ds has just got two rejections through from Edinburgh Sad

Groovee · 20/03/2018 14:46

Oh no @prettybird, how's he taken it?

WaxOnFeckOff · 20/03/2018 15:03

Oh dear, sorry to hear that pb :(

OP posts:
prettybird · 20/03/2018 15:08

Initially not very well (this is all via text with his Dad), but seems to be rationalising it a bit more now.

He's now saying he needs to re-consider Strathclyde but acknowledges that that might be rugby and social considerations. He's going to think seriously about both Unis as of course he should have been doing anyway Wink He's disappointed about the Quantitative Methods that he wanted to joint with IR at Edinburgh as he thought he would have enjoyed and been good at it. We're suggesting that he still might be able to explore doing that at either Uni, either within the subject modules or as one of the optional subjects.

We can also look, if he decides on Strathclyde, at working out ways of making him more independent here at home (in the first year) - eg making the attic floor self-sufficient and encouraging him to move out with friends in subsequent years.

He should still be proud of the fact that he got two Unconditionals from two good Unis. Smile
